I just heard from Ron Mann that his film Imagine the Sound is finally going to be released on DVD with stereo sound. For those who don't know the film it features interviews and performances from Cecil Taylor, Bill Dixon, Archie Shepp and Paul Bley. It's been available before on Laser Disc and VHS but only in mono. it's a great film. (I'm not entirely unbiased: Ron is an old friend and ex-student of mine and I wrote the liner notes for the Laser Disc release.) Ron it will be available in September, but these things are usually delayed.

I don't think the earlier version makes much more sense than the later (imho, better) version. The original novel is the result of 2 earlier short stories cobbled together, and it's not entirely coherent. As I rememer it the famous horse race discussion is placed where one story peters out and the other begins . It's a better bridge between the two than anything in the novel.

I think some of these lines are from the novel on which the film is based, but much of this dialogue may have been written by William Faulkner. (And I'll leave it to to Ubu to name the film.)

Is there another title to the song they call Tutti? (1st cut on disc 2.) It's very familiar to me and I think I've got a performance of it on another cd. But I don't see that title on any of my cds and I haven't taken to the time yet to listen to every cut on 10 cds.

Are you sure? That would mean that anything recorded before 1936 was now pd. I'm quite sure he's sure, because that's the way it is! I thought it was now 95 years as a result Disney's lobbying so that first Mickey Mouse cartoon wouldn't enter the public domain.

Well this one got made because Clint wanted to make it. He's known for working efficiently and most of his films are very profitable. Warners has let him do whatever he wants for a couple of decades. This script sat around for ages before he got involved.

Don't matter if you got the lps. I think that the Lps don't contain all of the original session and have edited versions of some songs. (Not sure though and I'm several thousaand miles away from my reference materials.)

34 thru 38 are included in the recently reissued 'Boston Blow-Up' Capitol/BN CD: Chaloff was not heard on 'Chasin' the Bass'. Ooops you're right. My bad. So I guess all I'm missing are some alternates and Chasin' the Bass.

Well I got it and it sounds good to me, but I think that "Old Bottles"-- the one Avakian produced-- is the same master as the older cd I had. Great Jazz Standards however is much improved.

I'm enjoying the music and the booklet but what does the writer mean when he talks about "cut time"?

I'm about to do a lot of flying so I've asked my family for noise-reduction headphones for Father's Day. I'm assuming that the Bose ones you see advertised everywhere are a rip-off since the price you pay pays for their advertising. (I presume the same thing about their radios.) So what's another good high end choice? Or are noise reduction headphones not a good idea?

Oldest I can find is Roach/Brown "Study in Brown". Manufactured in Germany. No date on it. Probably about '84. Picked it up free from an office in Warner Brothers where I was working on a laser disc project (which eventually became Criterion). I also got the Koln Concert but traded it for a later edition because the first one didn't have the coda.

The double cd set of Max Roach and Dizzy dueting in in Paris has an interview in which the 2 are shown this performance. Dizzy can't remember the drummer's name at first. He does notice that he's left handed. And neither of them recognize the bass player. But then Max says the drummer is Charlie Smith who was a brilliant young man who became a lawyer.

Evidence suggests that Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) approached CSULB to run KKJZ FM, which led CSULB to send out their RFP. We believe that the other 3 entities were invited to the RFP to deflect attention away from SCPR’s agenda. Only Pacific Public Radio, the entity that has run the station for the past 19 years has the expertise to keep KKJZ a 24/7 jazz and blues station. We are in a time where jazz has eroded away on the public dial, relegated to night and weekend programming - second to news and talk, if available at all. While we understand the cause of this, we believe a fight is on to prove that a 24/7 jazz and blues station like KKJZ FM in Los Angeles ought to be able to survive and thrive next to our news and information counterparts, providing a unique and equally valuable service. Jazz and blues have large legacies that should not go out with a whimper. Far too much of the media in our society has become disposable, tossing out legacy for the latest money maker. The cultural significance of jazz should not be thrown away. Please review the following links and do what you can to help us.
