The original LP of DO sounds ok, maybe a tad hot. My statement was more of a generalization on how some BN's sound to me, and in my opinion seem like a hard thing to get right in the remastering. Little room for error on the high end and uper mid-range. The fatigue ajf67 experiences is common to me, too. The cause is unnatural peaks/distortion/forwardness of the upper frequencies on some BN's. This can be a case where sound gets in the way of me enjoying the music.

More of Larry Young Mosaic. Mother Ship is outrageous.

Love this record. May be my fav from my newly arrived Mosaic set. Noticed some comments about iffy sound with the CD(CONN) and I agree. The Mosaic LP pressing is stellar as far as my references go. Just my thoughts on why it wasn't released: It sounds like a great session from 1963-66 which were not the rage in '69. The tension created and released is amazing, while being sparse at the same time. It just grabs me.

.....Picture of a can of worms.... Search around, there have been discussions. Suffice it to say, it's there in too many cases. Even on original LP's.

It's nice to know what you are getting. In most cases Mosaic thought it important enough to let us know if LP was digital or analog. I've heard both good and bad digital mastered LP's. I'm still amazed Ry Cooder's Jazz and Cowboy Junkies/Trinity Sessions are digital. Quite a few recent reissues on vinyl are digital(Toshiba Blue Notes) and I avoid them unless I hear they sound great. I want to thank Charlesp for his help on this thread. It looks like I/we have got it sorted out. And in the interest of keeping vinyl alive, well done to Porcy for selling his Mosaic CD's and getting vinyl sets!!! Hail Porcy62

Save some for the rest of us. I think a Mosaic intervention is needed. Rome here I come.

How are you liking that 88's LP? From the ads, they look like a quality product. I just ordered a CD(the horror) from the label and may want to pick up a vinyl title or two. BTW..What gear did you end up getting?
-
I'm not sure the buyers would appreciate your playing their vinyl before sending it on... LMAO I'm pretty sure they would be incredibly grateful of not being out $200 and would tell me to go ahead and play them, clean them and repackage them and go to the Post Office and wait in line, fill out out the customs form, etc...

When I picked up the box from a recent Ebay purchase, it was too heavy. Upon opening the box I found my item and the purchases for two other individuals. Their Paypal invoices were also enclosed. About 12 nice Jimmy Smith LP's(3 BN's and the rest Verves, the best being BN 1525 that he paid $57) and 5 sealed Time Life sets. The invoices add up to $200+. I guess I'll post them FS in the Offerring/Looking For forum. Not wanting bad vinyl karma, I've notified the seller offerring to ship them on. I guess I could burn to CD a few before I ship them.

noticed several BN LP's (mostly NY labels) on eBay
wolff replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Offering and Looking For...
All those BN titles suck. Do not waste your time and money bidding on them. -
That's probably because they're digital Just kidding Wolff, let us know how they sound, and I do hope you enjoy them. This set is right up my alley to receive a lot of time on the turntable. Lots of Grant Green and Elvin Jones. Mostly medium tempo(Unity may be the exception). Some really beautiful tunes. What a great product Mosaic put/puts out. As soon as I stop missing their vinyl issues, I get another set and wish they still issued everything on vinyl. The sign of a great product for me is: I really, really want more of it. And I want more Mosaic's. Probably preaching to the choir. Very warm, smooth sound. I imagine the instruments are missing some(just a bit) of the bite and real life energy found on originals. Green's guitar doesn't have the snap, detail and body I know it to have on other original LP's from this period. Also, I'm pretty sure the organ is missing some bottom end. I'm getting too picky here. The sound is very, very good. I've have many, many all analog LP's that do not sound this good. The music flows and communicates very naturally, which is what I value most. Next stop...the Tristano set in about a week.

Interesting comments I thought I would add to this thread. Hello Jazz lovers, wherever you are! I continue to be a fly on the windshield of the jazz industry. (HA!) I presume you know that Bud Shank was fired from his post as founder and guiding light of the Bud Shank Workshop in Port Townsend, WA. He has been the 'man' there for 25 plus years, assembling one of the best teaching ensembles ever! But now they want a younger man with young ideas! Outsourcing the wrong guy folks! It only takes forever to learn this music thing and even longer to come to terms with this jazz thing. And they want a younger guy. Any damn fool can play when they are 20, or 30, 0r 40, 50, 60. But try cutting the mustard when you are in your late 70's! Now anyone that can do that has acquired knowledge that no younger person can ever hope to learn. The jazz existence, or any existence is not about getting somewhere it is all about the voyage. No one can ever master life, only experience it and contribute something to making the world a better place to be an artist. ARTIST is the key word. If you want to be a practical musician, great. Get some gigs and have a good life. But if you want to be a jazz musician, the requirements are more stringent. An awareness of world culture is a good place to start! Learn something about food and wine, learn a language, read a book, paint a painting, see an O'Neal play, stare at a sunset. Write a Rondo for heaven's sake- be somebody. And no matter how long you do it you will barely touch the surface of this passion called life, the jazz life! You have to be a warrior-Bud Shank is a warrior! A tough one who has survived. What he has to teach is incalculable to measure. And they want a younger guy. How about Norah Jones to teach jazz singing? Yeah! Right! Bud and I have been doing many gigs together, Toronto festival, North Sea and others. We broached Concord records to try and secure a one shot record deal for Yoshi's in November. They said that instrumental music doesn't sell anymore! Imagine! A company founded on instrumental music, great music, decides that it doesn't sell anymore. I am mad as hell and will continue to rant and rave about these things until my last breath. Culture in America is going to hell in a hand basket. (I love that saw - don't know what it means but love it still.) Keep the song alive. Until next time stay well. And thank you for being a part of my thing! Phil Woods

Just wondering.

Nice. The mono, no less. Since I live in Renton, you'll have to share your source with me. Don Cherry: Complete Communion. Original and Mosaic reissue.

I simply refuse to even so much as glance at that link, wolff... I do not blame you, but go ahead, take a little peak.

The MOSAIC LP SETS keep rolling in. I think this is the most(including other sellers and recently completed) I've seen on Ebay at one time. I'll be into my November music budget if I get anymore.

The Complete Bud Powell Blue Note Recordings (1949-1958) on Mosaic Records. Nice stuff from the 1951 and 1953 sessions.

Here is link to the one I use. I've used it quite a bit and it's worked flawlessly. CD recorder
