  1. The #4's go for $5 each, but the Soloman's go for around $30+ . I have one that I got during a special....buy 4 boxes and get a Soloman free. It will probably sit in my humi for years.
  2. I smoke a cigar now and then and ran across this at a site I frequent. I would imagine, in Cuba, this is quite an honor. Montecristo Cabinet of 95 Cigars 95th Cumpleanos ( Anniversarry) of Compay Segundo We are proud to offer you the New Montecristo cabinet of 95 Cigars for the occasion of Compay Segundo 95th Birthday Numbered edition of 95 items, Each Humidor containing the Following 55 Cigars Montecristo N°4 (42X 129) 40 Salomon N°2 ( 56X172.50) Each cigar is banded with a ring stamped by Compay Segundo Picture Compay Segundo - Many people have discovered Compay Segundo thanks to the Buena Vista Social Club. However, Compay had been making music long before he crossed paths with Santiago Auserón or Ry Cooder. Born Francisco Repilado in 1907 in Siboney, a city in the Cuban province of Santiago, Compay Segundo is a vital link with Cuba's musical history and participated in the development of the son tradition. He learned how to play guitar from Sindo Garay in the early 1920s . "The first person I heard playing guitar was Sindo Garay. Segundo is connected to many notable musicians and groups, including El Conjunto Matamoros, Compay continued to perform intermittently as a solo artist for several years, while also rolling tobacco leaves at a cigar factory

  5. I 've had it for quite some time. I think they did a very good job! There are one or two edits/splices that are noticable, but they are on the tapes. Very clean, detailed and dynamic pressing. Great jazz as I'm sure you know.
  6. These are mostly second or third copies as originals could not handle my lifestyle when they first came out. LOL Hendrix / Axis... Little Feet/ Waiting for Columbus.... one of my favorite live albums Warren Zevon ZZ Top Doors Zep
  7. Quite often friends/relatives ask me to burn them a couple jazz CD's. Out of 1200 to choose from "Soul Station" is always in the top ten. This album grabs my attention and holds it.

  14. I'm always amazed at the different styles of jazz and I listen to most of them. From Johnny Hodges to Eric Dolphy. Dixieland is one style I do not listen to.
  15. Ervin then Dolphy, because I like the Candid albums.

    Old Masters

Post your question at Steve Hofman's site and he'll set you straight. Then read this article on the pains a company went through to remaster Blue Note mono recordings, that bettered all previous efforts.
  17. I've seen them online, but have not picked any up. I'm curious about them, too, I think Green/Latin Bit is another one.
  18. the last 10-20 years or so?? Just curious, as I spend most of my time with re-issues I have no idea which label has been turning out the best new titles.
  19. Got it yesterday! Listening now. I'm going to love this set
  20. Top.. for one more time through. Thanks for looking!!
  21. That term means nothing to me. There is no agreed upon definition for it. IMHO audiophile recordings start at the recording session and continue through to the playback system. When an early Stax/Volt recording becomes an 'audiophile' re-issue it's just a selling point. There are only a few re-issue labels doing great work. Classic Records, Speakers Corner, Acoustic Sounds, and whatever Steve Hoffman is working on, are a few.
  22. I wish I had that recording, but I've never gotten around to getting it. I here it's one of the best. Not to be a smart ass , but if the recording is inaccurate you could reverse the channels on your stereo and it would be accurate.
  23. I couldn't disagree more! In my opinion the importance of a musician should be judged by the music he played, not by the number of recordings he made. Chaloff was one of the most significant improvisers on the baritone saxophone. I agree, but I get I get tired of listening to his 2 or 3 good LP's over and over again. As far as a baritone led session nothing tops Blue Serge, but then what? What he did on the baritone was pretty unique and I give him that, but I feel he was influenced by another sax player more than he influenced anyone else.
  24. I'm curious about his relationship/feelings about Shirley Scott, Gene Ammons, Eddie Davis and Mose Allison.
