I've been away all week and return to this sad news. Jackie is my favourite BN 1950/60s artist. When first getting into jazz I like many found his tone hard to like. This soon turned to great love and instant recognition , his BN sides are all IMO classics ( even Tipping the Scales). Saw him only once on tour with Blakey on the latter's last UK tour. RIP

Clearly fo most of us the hole s must be bigger than what we do have, missing from my collection is Any Stan Kenton Glenn Miller Jan Garbarek- and a load of other ECM types Hal Russell Dollar Brand Fess Williams Coon Sanders Night Hawks er ....thats all I can think of right now. I guess the only major gap there is Hal. No doubt CN will straighten me out on that point in the future...

who is Lou Blackburn, any relation of Tony Blackburn ???

Jan Allan- 70 is well recommended- bigsih band charts with a cool Gil Evans like feel

Good bunch I'll be going for these. I have the rest in some form or another, I have Demon Dance on the McMaster Cd (thin watery sound) and but will replace if the RVG sounds better.

Spinning this set and the Wave CD -Jazz from the 1950s has made me curious re Don Ferrara. I've seen his name mentioned here and there. Any other recommendations of where to heard material featuring Ferrara?Very Cool is on order but anything else?

this album is quite a compelling listen. I'm still not sure what it's about- melancholic certainly. Tardy seems to get his voice heard but Tolliver doesn't seem to get my of a chance. curious certainly

great selection, only nailed first track for sure, the level of my ignorance knows no limit. 1- Movie soundtrack available on CD from a series that has had lots of discussion in these parts 2- Mal Waldron- no idea who else? Sonny Fortune perhaps 4- Anthony Ortega ??- great sounding alto 5 great BlueNote sound which I know I know but can't place 10- Getz/Barron ?? 11 Brownie?- Quincy Jones like arrangment- could this be from Brownie's Parision sessions- wild guess 15 Tony Fruscella or Chet perhaps great sounding alto behind the male vocal tracks- weird separation suggests the vocals were overdubbed

I seem to have loads of Clayton LPs in addition to the Mosaic Columbias, great material on Vanguard as already mentioned,some really nice sides on Phillips ( now on the Mosaic Columbia Swing sessions?), Kansas Nights an excellent 2LP offer form Fantasy combining 2 good Prestige dates from the early 1960s, and a few others I forget the names of

Does anybody know what is Mosaic's explanation for not including these two classics sessions in this box??? not big band dates

Following the Earl Hines solo thread I found these LPs today Earl Hines - MF Production 5 LPs set of solo and quartet sessions (with Budd Johnson) from 1977, very nice Earl Hines - Solo 1956- American Recordings- playing largely his own compositions Hines 65- Solo- on WRC label- ( not sure of original label- produced by Stanley Dance) Finally a Columbia LP combining some trio sides from 1950 and some solos from late 20s and 30s. all for £14- not bad for a big slice of the Earl.
