  1. I picked up the All Stars set at the last gasp and certainly have no regrets. Not my original bag but since hanginghere, everything seems to be these days ( there are exceptions of course )
  2. There are a few sealed copies of this "Bird & Dizzy, a musical tribute"... I found one just 1 year ago. Interesting album, true bebop violinist, Ko-ko and Groovin' high are just "tours de force'... (I'm writing his biography!) Memorable appearance of Warne Marsh. sorry for getting the name of the album wrong . Sadly for a Marshophile the rear cover incorrectly credits Marsh as appearing on one or two tracks which do not feature him at all, even in the ensemble. Good album none the less and definately worth the £5 I paid. Bargain IMO
  3. Hampton Hawes- Green leaves of summer- Contemporary- ( green label , ultra thin vinyl and yet very thick glossy cardboard sleeve, great sound though) Elek Bacsik- Bird& Dizzy a musical tribute- Flying Dutchman (until 10 minutes ago sealed copy ) - got this really because of Warne Marsh's presence. Marsh is hardly in evidence but the album works very well. edited for spelling
  4. where in Birmingham, I get to Solihull fairly frequently.
  5. yesterday got a copy of Warne Marsh- Sax of Kind Warne in Norway - Hot Club, LP. Warne plus five Norwegians recorded in 1983. Some very good spots for Mr Marsh and decent (if slightly variable sound). Not how widely available this one was, would be surprised if it was on CD yet.
  6. Happy birthday, May it be a vinyl one too. Never leave an emporium of vinyl empty handed ( Merchant of Visa Act 1 scene 2)
  7. I've only one Esquire LP by Ray Bryant ( forget the name buts it's a solo date ex Prestige). The vinyl looks nice and shiny , is incredibly heavy ( almost like it's a shellac 78) but indeed sounds as if it's been to several hundred parties and been played with a rusty nail !!!
  8. Buffalo Springfield: Buffalo Springfield 2LP (1973)- some nice stuff here Buddy Colette- Nice Day- Contemporary ( Vogue) , a number different sessions but whole thing has a very good feel to it. Pity it's not well known.

  13. Buddy Collette- Nice Day - Contemporary ( Vogue UK issue, Mono) next up Ruby Braff- Hustlin and Bustlin- Vogue UK
  14. problem with end of year lists is that I tend to remember what I've played recently rather than earlier in the year. Discoveries Luis Russell- Retrieval 2CD- plenty of excellent soloists and then there's Red Allen King Oliver- Retrieval 2CD- can't believe how these excellent transfers really open up this wonderful music Most played CDs Diz/Bird- Townhall- Uptown Han Bennink/Guus Janssen- Groet- Data Warne Marsh- All Music - Nessa Paul Towndrow- Out of town Sal Mosca- Thing ah- majig- Zinnia Frank Hewitt Smalls Most Played LP Trane/Monk- Carnegie Hall- Mosaic Jabbo Smith- Decca comp. 18. Any pointers re discography for the Shorty set, I picked up a couple of Atlantic LP issues of some of this material yesterday but there's scant information on the sleeveas to who's playing or indeed track names !!

  23. a few quick questions are there many vocals on this set ? not my favourite what's the overall flavour of the set, trad or mainstream swing.? I associate Ed Hall and Bud Freeman as pretty relaxed swing stylists than trad revivalists. Pity there's no sound clips any help?
  24.
