  1. I almost fainted when I saw how they adjusted their shipping charges to Europe ... ← Same here! Crazy indeed! Now if they had cheapo prizes and crazy shipping (as 2001 has for the 'mericans), I would not bitch... but this is a little bit too much! And I went for US postal services (since I would not be home anyway when DHL or UPS or whoever delivers), and that still takes 2-4 weeks! For that, 30$ is way too much, no? ← I agree, it's a pity the option of slow but cheaper surface mail is now only available for orders less than $100. I can't quite believe I stumped up $30 over 10 days ago to ship the O'Day set and I still haven't received it !!! Higher prices and slower service don't bode well really !! ← I guess U.K. Customs is very happy with your order... ← Undoubtably, surface items often would bypass their scrutiny where as airmail or fedex always get taxed.

  3. Very sad, hopefully he's now at peace. I think LT was a true giant and his music has given me so much pleasure. Although he left the biz a long time ago we can be grateful that his career was reasonably well documented.
  4. Fatha- New Earl Hines Trio - Columbia Red Norvo- Red and Mildred- Circle- excellent transcription recordings- Bailey's a decent singer Martial Solal- Trio Suite- MPS
  5. I've got the Handy one too and it's excellent well played hard bop
  6. Johnny Richards- My fair lady/Rites... Vogue 2LP ( white label promo)
  7. Great recommendation, just got this from Cadence. Jsut feesl right from the first note, sounds very modern and fresh as a daisy. Reminds me, somehow of JR Morton, Mingus and KV5 ( I know, shoot me !!!)
  8. I know it's totally dumb put picked up a mono copy of Beatles Revolver 2nd pressing. Only £6. It was covered in sticky finger marks and light scratches but after a good scrub plays without skipping even if there is constant ( if not intrusive) background noise. I'll stick with the CD.
  9. I've got a vinyl of the Ory material Red Allen ( Verve France mid 1980s reissue). Decent Dixie material played with plenty of passion but if I'm hesitant over 9 discs of O'Day I'm even less likely to want a similar amount of Ory -- even if he did know Pops.
  10. Happy Birthday- Have a few pints at the Red Lion !!
  11. This is the only one I know, ironically I'd been enjoying it so much over recent weeks that I'd been scouring the web for other CDs by AM just before his death was announced. Recommended.
  12. with a dead line of 1st August not much scope for procrastination....cue cover shot....
  13. hope all's quiet now, must be a rather worrying development
  14. must give the JJ set a spin, it's been a while, who needs nine discs of O'Day ??!!!, wasn't even on my wish list..........til last night
  15. just been enjoying his wonderful "..and Friends" CD on MPS. RIP
  16. I hadn'y noticed that, must listen again, my regret was that the immense impact of the original LP was reduced by the drawn out programming of the evening's music
  17. got Fuego and the Hancock, the former is IMO pretty dull, nobody's finest moment, dull tunes and not particularly inventive playing even the irrepresable McLean is pretty subdued. The Hancock on the other hand is VM better.
  18. that's the totally daft thing about vinyl gradings, a system that allows something that is trashed and probably fit only for the skip to described as "very good". !!!
  19. where to start with in-print Tyler ( I presume Saga...is OOP ?)
  20. Ruby Braff- Hustlin and Bustlin- Vogue UK- nice
  21. you'll love them both, my appreciation has only grown with time and I return to these two special discs often
