  1. Baker/Mulligan - Fantasy 2LP- comp. of Mulligan/Baker sides from 1953, Mulligan Plays Mulligan from 1951 and four tracks of Chet's hardbop things for Prestige from 1965. Great sound Louis Armstrong 1930- LA sessions- pretty mellow stuff, some of it amazingly commercial ( well amazing to me for 1930 !!)
  2. I simply have a mono button on my integrated amp, which makes the output of each stereo speaker the same, handy for getting rid of weird stereo effects and sometimes makes mono LPs sound as if they have less surface noise ( no idea why)
  3. what's why I'm glad to have a Mono button on my amp.
  4. New Orleans Rhythmn Kings - Swaggie recorded 1923/4 Frank Lowe- The Flam- Blacksaint MJQ- Pyramid- London ( DG)
  5. Yeah, Kenny have a great one... happy birthday all the best Adrian
  6. how are you conecting MD player to PC ??? I use an Edirol UA1D for this , it connects MD digital opt output to USB port on my lap top, recorded to HD using Wavelab software- sounds great by avaoiding use of PC soundcard which may be your problem
  7. Those early 70s Vanguards can be really excellent. Whilst the rest of the industry was going to the dogs and issuing inferior pressings on thin vinyl, these guys kept their standards up. I have a couple of the 'Essential' double sets from this vintage (Jo Jones, Vic Dickinson) and they sound great. Picked up for about £5 each ! ← only snag with the Essential Jo Jones 2 LPis that it's in fake stereo, great music though
  8. I must listen again to the Morgan set tonight. I thought the sound quite acceptable with perhaps the first two sessions sounding a bit harsh and strained but then so many of the 1956/7 BN sessions I have on CD have that feel to them. great music of course, you really can hear Morgan's progression as an artist over what really is a pretty short period of time.
  9. not with Konitz but Martial Solal's " Suite for trio" on MPS is another good one with Humair and NHOP in support.
  10. any update,??? I feel the need for more Frank !!
  11. I used the altavista babel fish to translate each page, which worked very well until I got to the secure pages. Then I just had to cut and paste paragraphs into Babel fish to get the meaning of the varoius options. I think most of my probelms were caused by using the "shared link" that muddle things. I think the newer link above should be ok. As with Jim, Red Octapus staff were very helpful and quick to respond to my queries. CD rocks of course....
  12. where can this be got ? ← eventually got this release and it was well worth the wait. Nicely recorded and certainly pretty idiosyncratic. Very solid recommendation Nate. Thanks !!!
  13. Hey don't knock that series, it may look naff but "The Best of I Love Jazz" LP was my introduction to modern jazz.
  14. some LPs- two quid each Charlie Shavers- At the London House- Hep Louis Bellson- Roulette ( a big band date inc Joe Maini !) Shelly Manne- My fair lady- Contemporary Jack Lesberg- Famous Door
  15. this pretty much nails the argument IMO- we don't want trouble. On a personal note I have enough difficulty finding listening time for my legitimate CDs LPs etc let alone dubious quality boots.
  16. I've one of the discs you mention, playing is well up to standard , the sound however is a little harsh and echoey and doesn't make for the easiest of listens.
  17. This is just so tragic, the minor inconvenience I've had over the last few days over G8 protests here in Edinburgh, fade into total insignificance compared to this dreadful act of cowardice.
  18. wow !! now I'm GREEN
  19. what/where is dimeadozen to be found ?
  20. I saw him once with MBB and he was soulful. RIP
  21. Perhaps shamefully I've no Marion Brown, is this a good place to start ?
  22. are these hybrids generally preferrable to the XRCD K2 discs ?, I'm interested in the Coltrane Prestige titles. I don't have any of these in any format nor do have or intent to get a SACD player.
  23. Barney Bigard/Art Hodes- Delmark LP Buck Clayton LP with usual suspects ( Bud Freeman, Pee Wee R etc) unsure of providence as it's on a UK 60's label which indicates next to nothing regarding the date
  24. Well sadly I'm gloomy about buying vinyl on ebay at the moment. I started using ebay about 8 weeks ago. Out of 9 transactions, one failed to show up and in two record condition was pretty much unplayable. I thought I'd been pretty careful re sellers with good feedback. Perhaps this reflects the vulnerability of vinyl rather than unscrupulous ebayers.
  25. this one sounds really pretty dark and muddy on vinyl, interesting but a hard listen
