  1. I'd tend to agree
  2. Gary McFarland -----Point of Departure-----(Impulse) 1972 reissue but none the worse for that. Still has lovely heavy glossy GF sleeve. I've not played this in a while and it's a very good album.
  3. that's a very fine one. I've several other Dreyfus releases which are poor by comparison.
  4. First Meditations, Vista, Rural Still Life and Three Four Shepp arrived last week. FM was an upgrade from the GRP edition which I've always had trouble enjoying. Three For Shepp was to replace a defective domestic disc and it sounds better too. The other two were on the sound recommendations here. Both are very attractive albums.
  5. Very sad news.
  6. The Jody Grind-----(BN Liberty) Been on the look out for this as it's another favourite which sounded a little dusty on CD. The Liberty original has a gatefold sleeve as a do a number of other Liberty sleeves of that era (New York Now and a Papa Lou title IIRC)
  7. Next this classic. Mono UK Vogue , sounds great of course.
  8. Manny Albam------ A Gallery of Gershwin------(Coral) Imaginative recasting of some familiar Gershwin tunes for orchestra and up to 8 hands. Bought primary for Eddie Costa. Eddie does get some of trademark lower register runs in here and there. The orchestra doesn't bog things down and it's jazzier than you might expect. Albam as an arranger seems to be a mixed bag- he's no Gil Evans or Bill Holman. I don't get a consistent style to his arrangements. He tries plenty and things are rarely straight down the middle. His run of Coral albums Jazz New York, The Blues is everybody's business, West Side Story and A Gallery of Gershwin make for an interesting body of work. WSS is probably the pick but they all hold interest. The Corals being Decca pressings leave lots to be desired , nice heavy glossy covers though.
  9. I've found these Philips Fidelio X1/00 headphones to be very good. They appear to have been replaced by X2/00 which looks very similar.
  10. Our Thing was the first JH I heard. I was so taken by Andrew Hill ( i'd not heard of him at that point) that I picked up Eternal Spirit which was then a current release. I recall real joy listening intently to Hill's playing on both and revelling with self satisfaction that I'd discovered someone really good. Rara avis indeed. The next one I got would be Page One, which struck me initially as tamer , more commercial etc and somewhat pedestrian. I now of course love all his BNs and they are amongst my favourite in the whole BN catalogue.
  11. Aldo Romano/ Jean Francois Jenny-Clark------Divieto Di Santificazione-----(Horo) Perhaps my only album of bass/drums. There is brief recitation of poetry. The whole thing has a melancholy air .
  12. Ordered plus Bobby Bradford/ John Stevens set. I've had one ( but only one) of the LPs a few years. Time to complete the set.
  13. Walter Norris ----Stepping on Cracks----(Progressive)
  14. Now moved onto ... David Wertman--------Kara Suite----------(Mustevic Sound Records) picke this up because of seeing Charles Tyler on the credits. It's another odd album of freejazz , grooves and some mysticism to boot. Interesting.
  15. Now playing Frank Wright-------Kevin, my dear son---------( Chiaroscuro) Very listenable album with a really odd mix of players but it works well
  16. Burton Greene-------Presenting Burton Greene---------(Columbia 2 eye) Moog and/or piano. Pretty good Chest hair on the cover didn't work for Herbie Mann and it doesn't work here either
  17. Like everyone I'm deeply saddened by this awful event. The events and the response reveal both the best and worst of the human condition. Every country has their problems in their society. Outsiders need to be cautious before casting judgment and offering solutions.
  18. Inner Urge was one of my least favourite sessions until recently. I found the RVG dull and uninvolving. All that changed with the arrival of a NYC mono . Now it's a favourite.....
  19. Steve Lacy ------- Momentum--------(Novus) I like "The Bath" particularly.
  20. Burton Greene ----- Valencia Chocolate-----(CAT) 1985 Dutch session. Good music but pressing a tad spotty.
  21. Lawrence Brown ---- Inspired Abandon----( HMV UK) Ellingtonian in every way. Brown's playing isn't too interesting but it's pleasant enough. With Rabbit et al making up the numbers, nobody could complain
  22. Andrew Hill ------ Mosaic Select 016 Disc one - totally solid. The three originally released tracks are the strongest. Good choices were made on the initial release of "One for one" but it's more than good to have these sessions in near totality.
  23. Detail-----------Okhela-----(Affinity) 1982 , no Bradford on this one. Gjerstad/ Dyani/ Stevens
  24. I'm all ears as the only Dunmall I have is 'Birdman' mentioned above. In my collection that puts him on a par with Pharoah Sanders.( yes I only have one by him too).
  25. Thanks for posting. A generous tribute that paints a colourful portrait.
