  1. I'm already totally gripped having only read the introduction !
  2. Kenny Dorham------'Round about midnight at the Cafe Bohemia-------(TYCJ 81038) Picked this up cheaply on a whim. I have the RVG but fancied the new mastering. It's exceptionally clear, almost sounding as if a different generation of tapes were the source. It's also nice hearing the LP tracks as originally conceived. 4 additional tracks are added giving 10 out of the 13 tunes ( excluding the 4 alternates) heard on the RVG.
  3. talk about a totally counterproductive protest. How to win friends and influence people....
  4. Bargain price for a very good set. Recommended
  5. Cecil Taylor Unit-------Dark unto themselves-------(Enja) Accidentally picked up the Enja when I already had the Inner City ( different cover) . I prefer the Enja- sounds better. I'll be keeping the Enja despite my copy having a huge London Weekend Television Music Services sticker on the front left. Signed out for use just once, in April 1989. I wonder if the LWT viewers did in the end experience the seismic shock that was the Cecil Taylor Unit. Some how I can't see it.
  6. This sounds very interesting. I struggled to get the preview function to work at the Oxford site but succeeded once I'd ordered ( @ amazon).
  7. Larry thanks for those insights.
  8. I see that has been up on dime in the past. Wonder how legit this is. I can't seem to find much
  9. I wouldn't spend much on this disc. The sound is not the greatest. The Draper session is better bit the Roulette tracks leave something to be desired. I played it all the way through although i had to leave the room during the Draper solos which dragged more than just a bit.
  10. Playing "Sound" over the past few days following the discussions in another thread. I'm only familiar with the CD issue so I'm not clear what editing was involved in the creation of the composite take of the title track. My only thought other sheer astonishment (all over again) at the sheer audacity and beauty of the music is how it was perceived at the time of initial release. How was it received by the jazz press and public. In particular " Ornette"seems backward looking in a way that " Sound" is completely different from any thing before ( correct?). Was "Ornette" perceived as a "safety" piece connecting the music firmly to the "tradition" and "Sound" the track where all bets were off. "Sound" has to my ears all sorts of references to earlier music but it's overall trajectory was surely alien to most in 1966. So my curiosity is as much as how it was received by others and what the musicians thought they were doing. Chuck?
  11. The Ran Blakes sound promising. I can't see healthy sales of "Sound" given that the existing CD is so good already.
  12. This arrived this morning and it doesn't disappoint. The musical interplay is all you would expect from this group. The sound is very good and shouldn't put anyone off, although I'd agree that the two basses seem somewhat buried in the mix. I don't have tone controls but I'm not convinced that cranking up the bass would assist the overall sound. A very good issue and as Flurin has noted it comes with a multipage CD size booklet with essay and many photos.
  13. Lucky Thompson / Barney Wilen/ Bent Jaedig/ Helmut Brandt ---------Four Brothers-------(Sonorama) Rec 1960 Hamburg., prev. unreleased . Fine sound , nice performances. The originals especially Thompson's work best.'"This here" was a misguided choice but everything else swings nicely and soloists are easy to identify. Guitarist Larry Atwell is a new name to me but seems very good. There will be more adventurous German radio sessions out there but any new Lucky is welcome .
  14. My DMM sounds pretty good. Did this ever see a quality Japanese issue ?
  15. generous sound sample suggests this will have some promise. I wonder how much will be finished tracks.
  16. Odean Pope------Almost like me---------(Moers Music) Jazz funk feel to some of this. Mainly about the rhythm and not much proper soloing. Gerald Veasley's electric bass has much to do with this. Just worth the $10 I paid at Academy in NYC a few years ago in so much that I have next to nothing by Pope as a leader.
  17. Superb record. I think you recommended it to me back in Medieval Times. Likewise I think. I've neglected the Italian Jazz scene in recent years by the excellence of Roberto Ottaviano's "Forgotten Matches" with Alex Hawkins has me intrigued again. Lots of new names that don't mean much to me.
  18. Nearly €23 , including postage to UK from Italy.
  19. I'm after a physical copy of this. i think I'll try the label directly once I've worked out how to navigate their Italian only website. This should be on the way to me from the label. As Flurin describes elsewhere email the label and they reply ( in English) and sent me a Paypal request for the cost+shipping. Hopefully the disc should be here soon. The Trio disc is outstanding. What for me started as a desire to support a fellow O member has developed in fully fledged and unashamed fan-boy status. Perhaps the latter has been obvious for some time in my postings but for those who haven't sampled Alex's output the new trio disc is as good a place as any to start. You shall enjoy it, it's excellent - both discs! I've been enjoying this set for the past few days. Both discs are excellent. It's up on Spotify but I'm happier to have the discs. After listening to the duo disc (disc 2) I put on Lacy/Evans "Paris Blues" (Owl). Ottaviano is closer to Lacy than Alex is to Evans or Waldron. In fairness to Ottaviano this is my first exposure so I'm not at all familiar to his sound/ conception. The 2 CD comes nicely presented in a digipak and is produced to a very high standard. Highly recommended.
  20. Happy birthday Flurin...
  21. I've heard of Allen Lowe but who is Matthew Shipp? Order placed, so I can find out.
  22. I'm also confused - not new.
  23. Off all the pieces of info shared here over the years these unreleased sessions have always stuck in my mind. I'd love to see these made available.
  24. The French RCA LPs are great , well mastered and pressed. I have just 2 which I let go when the Mosaic set arrived. Amazing price for the set.
