  1. I'm after a physical copy of this. i think I'll try the label directly once I've worked out how to navigate their Italian only website. This should be on the way to me from the label. As Flurin describes elsewhere email the label and they reply ( in English) and sent me a Paypal request for the cost+shipping. Hopefully the disc should be here soon. The Trio disc is outstanding. What for me started as a desire to support a fellow O member has developed in fully fledged and unashamed fan-boy status. Perhaps the latter has been obvious for some time in my postings but for those who haven't sampled Alex's output the new trio disc is as good a place as any to start.
  2. The Holiday session appears to be just one date and the SQ is excellent for the era. Very clear , decent balance.
  3. I've mentioned this elsewhere . It's highly recommended .
  4. I have ordered it...............................................................................................................................................................................just now
  5. I'd appreciate any feedback re Cafe Bohemia disc and how it compares to the RVG. I'd a Kenny D nut.
  6. Bud Freeman --------and his Summa Cum Laude trio------(Dot) Modern sounding Bud solos plenty support by Mousey Alexander (drums) and Bob Hammer (piano). Hammer whose name I'm not familiar with sounds good. Modern swing the kind of thing Scott Hamilton has been playing for several decades. Whilst there's clearly no bebop here it does sound 'modern' to my ears. Sits nicely along side Bud's "Something tender" (UA) which I'll play next. I prefer the latter but the Dot date doesn't deserve it's obscurity.
  7. I can't imagine that being in the correct key would be the deciding factor in keeping up with Bird. The recording surely is too poor for speed correction to be a deal breaker here ?
  8. I have Oliv (CD) winging its way from Martin Davidson along with Monoceros. I have high expectations for both,!
  9. What is VBR Q1 ? I'm not sure I have choices other than bit rate when ripping with iTunes. I have explore other ripping programs that verified rips but these too a very long time to do their thing.
  10. Earlier Billy Bang -------Rainbow Gladiator-----(Soul Note) Good band. Rosewomen and Chalres Tyler are excellent. The former is pretty much an unknown quantity to me. Now Andrew Hill---------------Judgment-----------(BN) NYC mono Nothing new to say that hasn't been said before. The quality of Hill's first four BNs are astonishing given how closely together they were recorded (November 1963 to March '64)
  11. Elvin Jones/Richard Davis-------Heavy Sounds-------(Impulse) nothing revolutionary here, more backward looking than Elvin's BN output but still a very decent session. Slide Hampton & Václav Zahradník Big Band ---------– B&S---------(Supraphon) Killer line up doesn't disappoint , recorded 1971
  12. Can't be good for the real Ogun? Can't see people searching for dance music suddenly being struck with jazz sensibilities.
  13. I had this lined up in my 'for sale' pile. I played it again for one final time and loved it and wondered why I'd thought that way about it. Now not being sold.
  14. I don't know your location but I have a spare leaflet for this select. It's creased along the bottom edge , especially at the bottom right corner. If you have no luck with Mosaic send me a PM.
  15. Company----------Fables----------(Incus)
  16. Muhal Richard Abrams-------Young at heart/Wise in time---------(Delmark) UK pressing Slightly noisy pressing which is a pity as it does somewhat intrude into the very graceful performances.
  17. Know what you mean, that's the effect of threads here. I'm scurrying to my collection to dust of various items. AACM as I have noted elsewhere seems to provide endless fascination. Earlier I was playing Urban Bushmen which was great. I think I've played the entirety of one AEC album everyday over the past week.
  18. Gil Evans-----British Orchestra-------(Mole Jazz) Fine recording !!
  19. Or Andrew Hill's "Judgement " , when the verdict or sentencing is due
  20. Rules are there to be broken but in this case I didn't have any of the ones I went for.
  21. Likewise sorry to hear of your problems. It is indeed JHR list day , slim picking for fans of Ornette but plenty of good stuff. On impulse I got a few Impulses,
  22. Lon I'm pleased things are working out well for yourself. For myself I'm only occasionally getting to gigs. Four years ago I had a bicycle accident which combined with a medical disaster has left me in chronic pain. The meds I take especially in the evenings leave me pretty exhausted , so going out to concerts assumes a low priority. As it happens quality jazz has become harder to come by here and my medical issues restrict ability to travel. Hence my over indulgence in all physical formats of recorded jazz
  23. Terry Gibbs Quartet feat. Terry Pollard ----(emarcy) is a very strong release ( his debut ?) with Pollard heard to good advantage. Strong swinging stuff,
  24. AEC---------Live in Japan-----(DIW) single LP. I think the CD released added more material . This session seems more conventional jazzy than some . Beautiful none the less.
  25. My introduction to any jazz was small book by Barry MacRae "The Jazz Handbook" (1987 Longman). It was the perfect introduction to jazz covering each decade , combining bios, photos and limited recommendations of titles to try. The chapter on the 1960s started with the first image above, the next two pages covered Muhal Richard Abrams and AEC. For the AEC the recommended listening was 1. People in sorrow 2. Message to our folks, 3 With Fontella Bass, 4 Live at Mandel Hall, 5 Fanfare for the warriors and 6 Nice Guys. I was absolutely intrigued by the text and the imagery. the group photo combined a sense of fun, some seriousness and sense of African identity. The picture of Bowie alone suggested careful listening and serious intent. I had to find something by these guys preferably the first on the list (People in Sorrow) because I assumed it must be the best. Of course being at that time being a "CD only" buyer I failed , until I picked up very cheaply on CD Jackson in your house/ Message to our folks. It was some while later that I found People in sorrow, it indeed probably deserved top billing by MacRae ( if that was his intent) . So my thanks to Barry MacRae for a great little book and getting me intrigued about the AEC. Any thoughts on his choices, a good cross section of early AEC work ?
