  1. SME-----So what do you think------(Tangent) From local record fair today
  2. Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath----------Yes Please---------(In and Out) France 1981
  3. Sonny Til arrived yesterday . It's very interesting. Lovely harmonies , plenty of humour and nicely intimate rapport with the audience. Some real cracker tracks and few others that are too saccharine. Great release. Pleased I got this .
  4. Dizzy Gillespie-----------Good bait/ I can't get started---------(manor) Diz plays supremely over a fairly pedestrian backing on "I can't get.." Good Bait is better but still relatively straightened out compared to versions to come. Byas at least gets a fine solo. Swing-to-bop, with bop on realy hinted at . Nice sides non the less. Edit to note that this thread is 10 years old exactly today. 78s last longer.
  5. Very sad , a real gentleman of the music and a reminder of a bygone era. He had plenty of style, soul and charisma.
  6. He plays very well in "Indian Summer" , other than that great CD I regret to say I'm ignorant of his work. Parkinson's is a particularly cruel disease , one which can be difficult to bear with dignity. RIP.
  7. Maybe it's my system but I played a bit of this last night. Although not a rich as other Columbias I didn't think it sounded bad at all. My DAC seems to make the best ( some how) of even the most troubled CDs.
  8. It's my favourite Monk recording. Hmm. .... Interesting, as a big Monk fan I rate this fairly low, it's a bit of a mess IIRC but I've not played it in a while.
  9. Of all these new SHM-CDs, the Monks are two discs I can recommend without reservation. Let the board know what you think after you've heard it. Monk Vol 1 arrived today. Tracks reflect the original 12inch 1500 series issues and not the chronological sequence that the McMaster or RVG offered. That said the programming works very nicely even if it does mean sessions split across the 3 CDs. Immediately I was struck by how open the sound is. Having ditched the 80s MCMaster's I only have the RVGs for comparison. Leaner and cleaner sounding on the whole with more 'air' around the instruments, results in better separation. I had though the RVGs sounded pretty good but even after a brief spin this new TYCJ sounds better.
  10. I think Reverse Blue simply showed off some versatility. It's more accessible than some of her dates but I've yet to find one I've not thoroughly enjoyed. She's a major talent with a highly individual voice. "Dragon's Head" was my intro and as good a place to start as any.
  11. Mine's on the way , the description had me sufficiently interested. I like to hear 'new' music, that's why I like jazz.
  12. Bennie Maupin--------------The Jewel in the lotus----------(ECM)
  13. Ken McIntyre with Eric Dolphy----------Looking ahead-------------(Esquire) Not played this in ages but now I wonder why. It's a solid album that looks both forwards and backwards with some tracks almost suggesting Griff/Lockjaw sax battles. Walter Bishop is particular effective here. Decent session , sound on my pretty much pristine Esquire is of course top drawer.
  14. Next Pat Metheny / Ornette Coleman------------Song X-----------(Geffen) Kudos to Metheny for having the the ambition to play with OC. Pat does just fine.
  15. Teo Macero with the Prestige Jazz Quartet---------Teo--------(Esquire) Pretty cool outing that's ok but not exactly electrifying. Macero does Konitz but Konitz does Konitz better -as it were. Mal Waldron is present but the cool setting means his usual grittiness is not to the fore. It's a moody old album but it does have some charm. Limited recommendation from me.
  16. If you don't know anything by this group( like me) is this a reasonable intro? Unfortunately I can't find any samples.
  17. Jeff some great finds. Congrats on the new TT. As I've said before ive used a Lenco 75 with continuously variable speeds between 16 and 83 rpm. In reality i usually play shellac at 78 as I'm too lazy to do the research into the correct speed. I've a photocopy of an old strobe disc which helps adjust the speed. Bigger changes to 78 play back have been a choice of 3 stylii sizes (Expert) and a better phonostage( a cast off from my vinyl playback chain)
  18. Joe Henderson----------Mode for Joe----------(BN NYC) mono I'd forgotten how good this session was. It's not JH's strongest BN but more than decent. Next........ Wayne Shorter--------Night Dreamer--------(BN NYC) mono Similar feelings to the Henderson above. For a long time I didn't rate this much compared to what was to come on BN. Lee Morgan's presence might suggest a Messengers performance but it sounds more advance (to my unsophisticated ears). Juju and SNE remain ahead but thus can't be too far behind, along with a bunch of others.
  19. I heard most of this in the car this afternoon. I'll need to listen again. Jason Yarde seemed very perceptive in his comments as was Evan Parker.
  20. Andrew Hill -------So in love-------(Warwick Japan) Not played this in a while. . To be honest I'd struggle to identify this as Hill in. BFT. It's a nice session well recorded with a slightly echoey ambiance. It's very much more straight ahead than he'd become .
  21. I think I prefer it to FSS. Mine's a Liberty again.... ' NYC Mono' envy could be a new feature of this thread Remember , earless NYCs are really just early Libertys.
  22. Sam Rivers -------- Contours-------(BN NYC) mono Every bit as good as FSS. This NYC mono is earless which I think is standard for this title. Sounding very strong.
  23. Taking a break from my BN fest of the past 24 hours.... Sun Ra--------Cosmos-----(Blue Silver) Recorded Paris 1976 with smallish line up of 12 including Gilmore, Allen, Danny T. It's a studio recording with good sound. Limited weirdness and strikes me as one of the better Ra dates.
  24. I've had a hard time liking this title. I only know it from the Vocalion CD. The sound seems to my ears to be impenetrable , very dense without enough separation between the instruments to make for easy listening. I've not spun it since changing my DAC so who knows it might yield more. I hope the LP is easier on the ear.
  25. Johnny Coles-------Little Johnny C------(BN NYC) mono I just love this session. Funky without being formulaic . I bracket this with Whistle Stop for swinging ,grooving BN at it's early 60's best.
