Another thank you for your balanced review of these discs. I'm increasingly cautious regarding upgrading but some sessions are either so good or previously mastered so poorly , that improved versions become desirable. I've just ordered Monk Vol 1 -

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
Clunky replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Cecil Taylor----------- 2 Ts for a lovely T-----------(Codanza) disc 5 Pineal (black dot) The Pineal body influences sleep by the production of melatonin. No one is obviously sleeping here. It's been a while since I pulled this off the pile of small box sets I have in my basement. I recall the sound as being pretty uninviting but today it sounds more than adequate. -
I've 3 releases on Fataka and they're all very interesting and exceptionally well recorded.

Charlie Parker - Dean Benedetti Mosaic
Clunky replied to EKE BBB's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The reappearance of this set prompted me to pull if off the shelf for the first time in quite a while. It's really very good. The Bird plays at the highest level. The sound quality is really very acceptable on the whole. Benedetti had the sound pretty well balanced on the whole. So it's easy enough to listen through any extraneous noises ( of which there are many and varied). The truncated solos are all part of the sound universe of this set and simply the way it goes. I'm so glad I have this. -

I've a Toshiba edition ( TOCJ 6389) on CD which is like dermal-abrasion for the ears.

I've bought a few of the Sam Records issues, 2 Barney Wilen titles, 2 Chet LPs and one Chet EP ( ex Barclay) . Pressings exemplary. Wilen's "Jazz sur Seine" sounded very much better than the JiP CD. Similarly Bobby Jaspar's LP was much improved cf the JiP. The Chet are recent arrivals so I've not compared to the CDs I have ( of some tracks only). Initial impressions are good but not quite the improvements see on the other sessions. The Byrd sides don't do much for me so I'll be passing.

Well I'm a 78 guy as well as a 33.3, 45 , CD, MD, flac and streaming guy. With interests from the ODJB to Mad Dogs on the loose and everything in between. The point I was trying to make earlier was that 78s need to be flipped over every few minutes and whilst it can get a little tedious the allure of the physical product , it's history and provenance are great it's often the sound that captures you. Even some what worn 78s have greater dynamism compared to the same tracks transferred to LP or CD. The exceptions in my collection are where the 78s I have are in fact dubs and CD versions are from original pressings. The closer to the source the better it's going to sound. Regarding 45rpm LP sets . My experience is limited to around two dozen BN Music Matters and just a couple of others. Although some of the claims about them have been over stated they easy sound the best presentations of the music I've heard. Of course they'll be bested by further editions and it's a bit of a chore flipping them every 8-10 mins but as with 78s there are benefits.

45 RPM Tracklist A1 Out Of Joe's Bag A2 I Should Care B Gettin' And Jettin' C Hank's Other Soul D1 Hello Young Lovers D2 Three Coins In A Fountain So you have two LP sides with songs that are only 7:43 & 8:42 minutes long? What a pain in the ass that must be. You should try 78s, only 3 mins per side. There are benefits of course , as there are for 45 rpm LP sets.

Don Friedman's "Hope for tomorrow " is really good . Al Haig's "Chelsea Bridge" I recall as being a bit dull. I'll spin both LPs this afternoon to check

Ted Brown + Gene DiNovi------------Live in Yokohama----------(Marshmallow Jpn) Relaxed quartet date , immaculately recorded.Very pleasant if not especially revelatory. DiNovi is excellent and in all fairness I've not heard much by him.

I'd not read this thread previously but was interested to see the comments about Total Eclipse TOCJ8676. It's the only version I know . I'd pretty much agree that it's a bit harsh but not off putting. It's a great session. From all accounts it appears that no issue is particularly satisfactory .

That's a good one

Lightnin' Hopkins----------- Earth Blues-------( Minit ) UK pressing of 1940s sides.
-
I've been spinning a fair number in recent days too. A recent "discovery" has been the British quartet Four Bright Sparks. (1930)Not listed in Rust but a very decent quotient of jazz especially Len Fillis (guitar). All six sides I've found feature some wooden vocalists but the band swing quite well . Other recent purchases are some nice Jack Parnell quartet sides from 1946. Supposedly in a Chicago style they sound more modern. All UK band who swing well and make some very enjoyable if not especially unique sides.

this is a very good album, easy exceeding expectations

Ray Warleigh--------Reverie-------( Vinyl )UK pressing Really very nice session with a tougher than ECM type feel. It's not exactly a swinger nor is quite a fjordic as most ECMs. John Taylor is mercurial as ever.I've a small handful of Vinyl Record releases this one is a UK pressing the others I think are German. Fine release all round. Don't think it's been reissued.
