  1. I really wanted to like this one more than I do. Oh well. Pulled Nipples off eBay years ago in nice shape, black label with a beautiful concertina, for $100. Not "cheap" but entirely fair, so it can be done. I've really not spun this enough to form an opinion. All Brotzmann is so noisy, so this only gets played when the stars are perfectly aligned., i.e. When I feel in the mood and the house is empty. Ok , listened to this at low volume , so as not to offend everyone else on a Sunday evening. It's the proximity of the tarogota to a dentist's drill or snake charmer that makes it a hard listen, no wonder it's not had much play in this house. Now spinning Mumps-----------A matter of taste---------(MPS) This is a bit different from your average Mangelsdorff disc. ECM like soundscape with washes of synth and Surman's warbling soprano. Pretty underwhelmed first time I heard it but it's grown on me. Interesting.

  3. These two Waldron/McLean album are good. The Victor/JVC was released in 1976.
  4. Brew Moore--------Brew's Stockholm Dew------(Sonet)
  5. Randy Weston----Tanjah----(Polydor) mostly good charts from Melba Liston. Not so keen on Jamaica East which ends the first side- a bit twee
  6. Checking through , I find i have these ones, listed in rough order I'd place them. All of them are worthy , the top 3 are special. 4-9 are v good but a notch behind and the Mance is the only one I recall being al little disappointed in. I will of course need to relisten. I think this is a great idea for a Mosaic. Manhattan Project, Dizzy Reece Sextet, 1978, Bee Hive BH 7001 In High Profile, Dick Katz, 1984, Bee Hive BH 7016 Neo/Nistico, Sal Nistico, 1978, Bee Hive BH 7006 Roots, Branches And Dances, Ronnie Mathews, 1979, Bee Hive BH 7008 The Burn Brigade, Nick Brignola, 1980, Bee Hive BH 7010 Baritone Madness, Nick Brignola Sextet featuring Pepper Adams, 1978, Bee Hive BH 7000 Keep On Pushin', Arnett Cobb, 1984, Bee Hive BH 7017 Starfingers, Sal Salvador Sextet, 1978, Bee Hive BH 7002 Juicy Lucy, Sal Salvador All-Star Quartet, 1979, Bee Hive BH 7009 Truckin' And Trackin', Junior Mance, 1984, Bee Hive BH 7015
  7. spinning OJC issues of 4,5, and 6 and Alto Madness this evening. Both excellent with the former just nosing ahead.
  8. That's the only one I have, too. I was quite excited when I saw the thread title, but looking at the list that Soulpope put on earlier, I see the only other one I'm interested in is the Arnett Cobb. Oh well. Better start looking on e-bay. MG The Cobb is good, better than the Mance IIRC.
  9. I've a modest number of these on LP and I've not heard a dud
  10. The Ad-Lib date sounds no better or worse than most of the prestige sides. I quite like it. I've only heard Fat Jazz on Spotify and thought that both the sound and music were poor. The CD edition I have is TOCJ 50151 from Japan (2006). Sound is reasonable. Bass is pretty thin but there's no unpleasant shrillness , very listenable.
  11. We should probably take this into a Byrd forum for more discussion but for me "Royal Flush" is Byrd's best all-around BN, even though his chops had definitely begun to slide by the fall of 1961 when it was recorded. But between the playing of everyone, the quality and diversity of Byrd's compositions, the formal debut of Herbie Hancock and the Warren/Higgins beat I like it best Reasonable people can certainly disagree ... Good point I forgot about "Royal Flush" which is indeed of a very high calibre.
  12. Byrd in Flight is DB's best BN session . Everything is perfect on this date. The bonus tracks on the Conn edition are equally good.
  13. Hope he's doing well. He had some health issues a few years ago ( don't we all) , so it's good to hear he's still active.
  14. Jackie Mclean/ Mal Waldron--------Like Old Times---------(RCA/JVC Japan) Thanks to the two current JM threads pulled out this fine reunion between the two leaders. They work so well together on this 1976 date (recorded in Japan?)
  15. I think this my favourite
  16. If non leader albums are included then "Davis Cup" and of course "Cool and Struttin" must figure as some of the best. I'd love to hear a decent vinyl copy of Davis Cup as it and New Soil are top drawer.
  17. I'd agree too . No way I'd want my wife to have all that hassle. Everything to a dealer.
  18. I've had the EMI edition for many years and agree it's wonderful. The transfers are pretty decent too IRCC.
  19. Street Singer (BN King) has elements of this album plus some other tracks which IRCC completes the session with Brooks. On the whole I think Street Singer seems to hold together better than Jackie's Bag.
  20. That album was the holy grail when I first got into jazz collecting in 1972, the album no one I knew had ever seen or heard. I held this in no special regard when I first heard it on the RVG CD. The sound was a real turn off. A Toshiba LP and finally a NY mono revealed what a great session this is. Both LP editions sounding leagues better than the CD.
  21. I've never understood the antipathy towards "Tippin' the Scales". For me "Swing, swang, swingin'" is his low point on Blue Note. All relative of course as it's good enough to keep.
  22. I've only just started listening to her music. I like what I hear.
  23. It must have been tempting to add additional tracks to this release. It just sounds so good. Kampen on No Business is good but this is better. The CD era has made us greedy for length, never mind that , feel the width here.
  24. Not played this in a while but recall it as an excellent one.
