Sometimes I feel this way However do what you can to hear Evan Parker live on the straight horn As full a sound as one could imagine I've no problem with Parker , he's great

The soprano sax is the least loved member of the sax family in this house. In the hands of skilled practitioners it can sound great but quite often it's just a piercing wail of a sound which I struggle to enjoy. I'd agree that most soprano players need to learn a second instrument with a fatter fuller sound.

Annoyingly my order was cancelled , so I've had to re-order. Only recently picked up Occupy the World and I'm pretty overwhelmed by it's incredible vision and scale. It's just a massive record in every way. It really must be heard. If Great Lakes is half as good then I'll be delighted. I gathered all my WLS discs together and couldn't believe just how many I had. He's been consistently interesting and challenging for so long.

Looks like this one crossed the Atlantic twice. It has a UK copyright import label. I dig this out, not heard it in ages but recall that it was a great session very nicely recorded.

Not one I know but Lake is seriously talented and nice guy. A friend played a gig with him a decade ago and reported that he was incredibly supportive . Always liked his music before that but my respect for him only increased . If he appears on a date ,I'm interested .

Lucky's was a bit of pioneer when it comes to soprano sax. Unlike some who switch between bigger saxes and the soprano I'm just as heartened by his soprano or tenor playing. Isn't Lucky credited with using it in a modern jazz setting earlier than anyone else. ( earlier than Steve Lacy??). Some one will correct me I'm sure. Lacy is however the best soprano sax player ever IMO. Love them both.

Back to orbit Ogun with this 1971 date from the Trio. Not clear if this was issued anywhere until 1987 when this edition came out. Masterful. I'd like to hear more by this group. Pity there's so little The Trio --------By Contact------(Ogun)

Anthony Davis-------Hemispheres--------(Gramavision) Melancholic date with some heavy hitters in the shape of Wadada Leo Smith and George Lewis. It's taken my several listens to get into this. First impressions were that it was quite boring. Now, I'm not so sure.

Hardly touched my 78s in several months. An upgrade to my vinyl phonostage had me hooked on vinyl for this time. One unexpected benefit of this upgrade was shuffling my Moon LP3 phonostage over to use for shellac. This has totally transformed 78 playback. Everything brighter , crisper and cleaner than before. Any sense of dullness has vanish. All other equipment ie Expert tipped stylii , MM Ortofon cartridge , Lenco TT , ultra cheap graphic EQ etc. remain unchanged. I've picked up very few jazz 78s but have acquired some nice classical , comedy and cafe orchestra sides De Groot and the Piccadilly orchestra----Lilac domino/Pamela----( HMV) UK B903 Dating from around 1910-14, society cafe band. Domino is very bland. Pamela much better, hints of restrained gypsy music , with some modern touches , written by F. Norton. Can't find much on him or the band.

To hear what a vacuum cleaner in reverse sounds like Stateside I pulled off a dusty copy of Trio Fascination. I quite like what I heard but I guess there's a reason thus has lain unplayed in a decade. It's certainly not bad just not too fascinating

I think we should cut Sonny some slack . It is utterly inconsequential that he didn't recognise these players. The potential reasons are myriad but hardly worth debate next to Newk's achievements.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Clunky replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks for this. I'm delighted it's sounding up to par. No one would have benefitted from a poor sounding Mosaic consisting of previously released material which was easily available in cheaper editions. -
Nacka Forum---------Live in Tokyo futuring (sic) Akira Sakata------------ ( Moserobie ) On red vinyl so it must be good or trendy at the very least.

Contribution maid.

Cecil Payne-----The Connection ---- (Charlie Parker Records) UK stereo Strong session. Very good pressing in excellent condition, sounding great despite being a "budget" 1962 release.

Happy Birthday Jim.!!!!!!

Pulled out the Paris concert with Coltrane . It really an unrivalled window on group dynamics as history is being made. Coltrane's vision and perseverance particularly in light of the crowd's hostility is astonishing.

Last Exit ------------s/t--------(Enemy) Perfect for this Saturday morning - listening with headphones.

As I mentioned in the Listening thread the other day, Conference of the Birds sounds like shit. But I suppose that was in the air at the time. Really? How so? I have a mint German vinyl issue and it sounds excellent to me... Like wise , fine sounding German edition

Well of course, I love Thomas Chapin. I've used a photo I took of him playing in Glasgow as my avatar for nearly all of the 11 yrs this board has been in existence.

The problem trying to compile these lists is remembering. Inevitably these lists tend to have the releases most recently acquired. In no particular order I enjoyed these fine releases. I could have added several more on Intakt including Laubrock's Zurich and Rainey's Obbligato. A good year of the fine Swiss label. On reflection the Nessa, Ogun and Fataka would be my top 3. Bobby Bradford/Frode Gjerstad------Silver Cornet---- (Ncd-36) John Edwards, Mark Sanders, John Tilbury------A field perpetually at the edge of disorder ---- (Fataka 9) ICP Orchestra -----East Of The Sun ---(ICP 51) Louis Moholo-Moholo----- 4 Blokes ---(Ogun) Idea Bread- Beating the Teens--- ( Cunieform) Lacy,Togashi, Satoh-- Apices----( Studio Songs) Takase/Von Schlippenbach--So Long Eric----- (Intakt) Jemeel Moodoc----- The Zookeepers House----(Relative Pitch)

John Stevens-------Chemistry-------(Vinyl) excellent white hot date. lovely , not listened to this in a while.
-
Each to his own but I've always loved the Bethlehem version of Ko Ko. Came across it early into my jazz listening on a Charly comp CD which also introduced me to quite a number of artists .

more violin music... Billy Bang---------Invitation --------(Soul Note) great line up with Dennis Charles, Wilbur Morris, Charles Tyler and Curtis Clark. Good date. Charles' rhythmic flexibility is wonderous.
