  1. Najee is on a Charles Earland recording, and he's okay on it.
  2. Bill Holman--Mel Lewis Quintet--Jive for Five (Andex) Compendium of Jazz No. 2 (Verve Clef Series Trumpet label)
  3. I have Horace Silver's autograph on the Silveto/Emerald releases I bought from him at the Caravan of Dreams years ago. He was signing for everyone. I occasionally find used LPs which are autographed. Most interestingly, Gunther Schuller's Music for Brass on Columbia, which appears to be autographed on the front by Gunther Schuller, John Lewis, Joseph Wilder, Miles Davis, JJ Johnson, and Dimiitri Mitropoulos. The LP is signed on the back by Don Wittig (the LP's owner?).
  4. The Art Blakey (Bobby Watson musicial director) and Chet Baker CDs are both good. The Adams-Pullen is their only recording on Timeless that I don't care for--the pairing with John Scofield doesn't really work well.
  5. I don't have the album, but I believe there are various CD reissues on budget labels of this material. Here for example: http://www.amazon.com/Village-Vanguard-Sessions-Various-Artists/dp/B000001W03/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1291836148&sr=1-1 Or here ($125 for a new copy and $1 for a used one): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000001J0F/ref=s9_simh_gw_p15_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1JF6HM5F07NPYRTMKMZ8&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846

  11. I've had exactly the same editing issue when using a Windows computer. It sounds like Internet Explorer is the problem.
  12. Duke Ellington--Jumpin' Punkins (RCA Vintage) Dave Brubck/Gerry Mulligan--Compadres (Columbia)
  13. She certainly had an impressive run of recordings for Prestige from 1958-64 and some rather productive days. I haven't heard a bad one yet. 14. Gary MacFarland--Profiles (Impulse red and black) Ed Thigpen--Out of the Storm (Verve). Interesting record, with Clark Terry, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Burrell, and Ron Carter.
  15. Perhaps but I prefer physical media. I may have to reexamine my position in a few years though but not yet.
  16. Unfortunately, their real motto is "Everything but the Obvious is Going Out of Print."
  17. I saw him last Saturday with the same group. However halfway through the concert he had a female vocalist come out and "sing" one song with the band. I didn't catch her name but she was middle age, Asian, dressed in a spectacular outfit that had mirrored pieces on her clothes and she wore a necklace with large pieces of something mirror and the way light was bouncing off of her while she stood there was pretty wild. Her vocals were of the wordless variety and she sparred a little with Ornette in the upper register which got very interesting. After the show I talked to several people and her effect on the audience was very polarizing. She either loved it or hated it. I got the sense that she was possibly local and not part of the tour. Did anyone else see her at an Ornette show on this tour? She's part of the show. At least she was in Santa Barbara and I think in LA too. (Reminded me that Yoko Ono jammed with him before she'd ever met John Lennon.) Now the guest I would have really liked to have seen was Flea who played with him at the LA concert and according to the one review I read kept right up with Ornette. The same vocalist appeared in Austin (for one song). It was only five minutes out of an hour and three quarters concert.
  18. Basie and Zoot is a fine Pablo release, its definitely worth getting. As is another Basie collaboration on Pablo called The Gifted Ones, with Dizzy. I was pleasantly surprised at how good both of these releases were (inexpensive cut outs of both have been available recently).
  19. Chico Hamilton Quintet in Hi Fi (Pacific Jazz)
  20. Francy Boland/Kenny Clarke Big Band--Let's Face the Music (Prestige purple label)
  21. Sonny Criss-- Up Up and Away (Prestige, blue label) I like that one.
  22. I wanted to use the coupon to buy the new Hendrix box set, but of course they didn't have it. Instead I settled for the new Chucho Valdes CD with the Afro-Cuban Messengers. At least they had one new CD I wanted.
  23. Johnny Hodges: Everybody Knows Johnny Hodges (Impulse mono orange and black) Jimmy Smith: Midnight Special (Blue Note NY USA)
  24. That Illinois Jacquet Mosaic is really excellent.
  25. He played at the Dallas Convention Center Theater in 1987, with the trio (part of the performance is on Changeless). No bad behavior was observed.
