  1. What am I missing? It's a joke, NPR is so politically correct it's painful to listen to.
  2. Shelley Manne--Bells Are Ringing (Contemporary stereo) Father Tom Vaughn At the Village Gate (RCA). I rather liked this one, with Art Davis and Elvin Jones.
  3. Oliver Nelson, The Argo, Verve and Impulse Big Band Studio Sessions, discs 3 and 4.
  4. Lou Donaldson -- Here It 'Tis (Blue Note, Liberty blue label) Jazz Crusaders -- Tough Talk (Pacific Jazz black label)
  5. Max Roach--Percussion Bitter Sweet (Impulse, red and black) Jimmy Smith--Plain Talk (Blue Note, Liberty blue and white, German pressing)
  6. IMO that one is the best of the three similarly named releases in the series. But the other two are worth hearing, for sure. I ordered Modern Highlife Afro Sounds Nigerian Blues, it arrived today, and I'm liking the first disc just as much as the other compilation.
  7. Eddie Costa and Art Farmer--In Their Own Sweet Way (Premiere). I thought this might be a budget label, but this proved to be a virtually unplayed copy on heavy vinyl, with a bit of surface noise but actually beautiful sound.
  8. CD Baby order: Art Pepper--Unreleased Art Volume 3 (Widow's Taste) Michael Pinto--Prologue (Inner Circle)
  9. She got a singing career out of it, despite being a poor singer.
  10. I have been appreciating Smalls more and more my last few visits. In that regard, the Jeremy Pelt group (with J.D. Allen and Danny Grisset) on Feb. 2 and 3 looks good. Then on Feb. 20, also at Smalls, David Schnitter. I see some good stuff on the Fat Cat Schedule: Shimrit Shoshan at 7 on Feb. 5; George Braith on Feb. 7. And on Feb. 19, both Charles Persip and Freddie Redd.
  11. This weekend, Henry Threadgill, discs 5 and 6.
  12. Pee Wee Erwin--New York Dixieland (Jazztone) Miles Davis--Porgy and Bess (Columbia stereo, two eyes)
  13. Art Tatum Encores (Capitol ten inch) Sam Jones--Soul Society (Riverside, Japanese Viktor)
  14. Concentrate on the labels that made quality LPs and during their period of excellence. Buy the rest on CD.
  15. Ordered it for 74 $, should receive it before Christmas. Still waiting for it Meanwhile digging this baby real good:cool: I'm really enjoying this one. Amazing. The question is, where to next--this Soundway compilation perhaps? Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife Afro-Sounds: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WM8IAU/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A3I8R29Q3FV3P6
  16. Junior Mance, Junior (Verve black label stereo deep groove)
  17. Bill Mays-Marvin Stamm Quartet at UTD
  18. I liked the California Concert expanded reissue also.

    Jonah Jones

At the Embers is a Mosaic single reissue--I like it. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=1017
  20. Paul Winter Sextet--New Jazz On Campus (Columbia mono two eyes) Milt Buckner Trio In Europe 1966 (Prestige, blue label, MPS reissue)
  21. E.T. Mensah? No but I've put him on my list. Thanks.
  22. I've heard that Ornette is not well. I meant Tacuma actually, as not showing any upcoming concerts or club dates on his website. Ornette sounded really good on November 18 of 2010, is all I can say, not weak or anything like that.
  23. The one track from this session that was contemporaneously released by Candid (on an anthology) (Father and Son) is the best track.
  24. I ordered one--I wonder if Ornette is on the whole recording, or just a track or two? He has no upcoming engagements listed on his website--depressing.
  25. Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe and His Nigerian Soundmakers--Sound Time. Prior attempts to appreciate Nigerian music/highlife has failed for me; this fine anthology, recorded from 1970-85, ends that drought. It appears to be out of print though. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005AREW/ref=s9_simh_gw_p15_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0MER1Q3PP0RY07ER7DV8&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846
