  1. John Coltrane--Expression (Impulse) I am puzzled why this copy of Impulse 120 is instead numbered 91288. It has the orange black label, ABC Paramount. In the fine print, it says on the jacket Manufactured by Capitol Records. There's no Van Gelder stamp on the vinyl. The record sounds terrific anyway.

  3. Thank you B. Goren. I looked around a bit and missed that thread. Maybe an administrator can merge the two? As to my request for input, from the first responses here, it sounds like the order of preference might be Bix, Young, Diz, with Bix getting a slight nod over Young due to the likelihood that it will go OOP sooner. I notice the Lester Young is on back order. I would say Lester, Dizzy, then Bix. Unless you are really a fan of '20s jazz over modern jazz and swing, you will find that the best material with Bix is really great, but that his playing declines towards the end and the material without Bix is far less enthralling.
  4. http://cgi.ebay.com/Ran-Blake-IMPROVISATIO...807231173r17632 I have it, it's worth buying.
  5. I thought I was buying the definitive edition years ago when I bought the gold CD version in a long box, with corrected speed for the first time, but come to find out there was an alternate of Flamenco Sketches held back from the definitive version.
  6. Scat Jazz Club, it turns out, is a very nice club located in a basement, off an alley in Sundance Square in Fort Worth. http://www.scatjazzlounge.com/ Curtis Fuller was very enjoyable--he still plays well, and his young band (unfamiliar to me), was quite good. August 30, Shelly Carrol performs.
  7. Joe Farrell--Moon Germs (CTI) Kenton in Hi Fi (Capitol)
  8. Curtis Fuller--Scat Jazz Lounge, Fort Worth.
  9. John Coltrane--Impressions (Impulse, black and orange label)
  10. Worlds Records sent out an email today announcing a 10% off sale and stating: And, wait, there's still more! Worlds has just come into possession of the remaining inventory of Storyville color label. This venerable Danish label was founded by "Papa" Knudsen and released over 350 titles on the Storyville, Jazz Unlimited, Collectors Classics, Nostalgia Arts and the Duke Ellington Treasury Series (DETS) labels. These titles are no longer being manufactured. When these CDs are gone they won't be available at these prices again. We have been offering Jazz Unlimited, Nostalgia Arts and then DETS for several months and now we have remaining stock of Storyville label as well.
  11. Earl Hines is GREAT!
  12. I have both Mosaic sets.
  13. Funny that you would single out his tenor playing , since he rarely played the instrument . Most of his recordings feature his excellent flute and alto playing , along with an occasional turn on clarinet . Something Blue is a personal favorite of mine , not least for the hard swing generated by vibist Emil Richards and by unsung pianist Paul Moer . I have almost all of Horn's pre-RCA recordings and would suggest that anyone interested in Horn-the-jazz-musician check out his three Columbia albums . Two of them are out on a Collectables 2-on-1 CD , but the final one , Impressions of Cleopatra , has yet to be reissued , but it's a real sleeper that flute fans will want to track down . Impressions of Cleopatra is a very good record. The best Paul Horn record I've heard.
  14. I don't have an extra--I am willing to make you a copy of the booklet.
  15. Earl Hines--Plays the Hits He Missed (Realtime Direct to Disc, German pressing) Clifford Jordan--Hello Hank Jones (East World Direct to Disc, Japanese pressing) Both LPs sound fantastic. Does anyone have any other direct to disc jazz recordings?
  16. In case there are any flamenco guitar fans (and vinyl fans), I noticed that an excellent RCA Living Stereo, Carlos Montoya LP, recorded live at Town Hall, seems to be attracting no attention in this ebay listing. Both the performance and the sound quality on this one are outstanding. (I can't vouch for the seller, though). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...=tab%3DWatching
  17. The Jazz Makers (Columbia anthology, six eyes)
  18. It does appear that the 3 for 2 sale only applies to the somewhat lackluster list of selected CDs. That email was very misleading.
  19. Herbie Mann and Joao Gilberto--Recorded in Rio De Janeiro (Atlantic mono) Louis Armstrong--Hot Seven volume 2 (Columbia, six eyes)
  20. Bad cheek implants, for one thing.
  21. The Incredible Carlos Montoya--Historic Town Hall Concert (RCA Living Stereo)
  22. Grant Green--Idle Moments (Blue Note, Liberty, Van Gelder) Beatles--Rubber Soul (Capitol, mono)--The first LP I ever bought, way back in 1966 or so, it still sounds great. The Brazilian Guitar of Luiz Bonfa (Capitol, mono).
  23. Junior Mance Trio--That's Where It Is (Capitol)
  24. I wish I could be there--it's a great venue.
  25. Someone's on Microsoft's payroll.
