What live music are you going to see tonight?
kh1958 replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Tuesday night: Mingus Big Band at the Iridium. I was able to attend the second set--Paris in Blue, Jump Monk, Sweet Sucker Dance, Devil Blues, and Better Get Hit in Your Soul.. Among others, featured Abraham Burton, Frank Lacy, Helen Sung, Lou Soloff, Dwayne Burno, Earl McIntyre, and Kenny Rampton. At the end, Abraham Burton announced that this was the final set at the Iridium for the MBB. However, as I was leaving Sue Mingus said that they were relocating to Jazz Standard in October. Wednesday night: Mike Stern trio at 55 Bar. A mighty fine set. -
Miles Davis--Dig (Prestige, black and gold label)
-
Modern Jazz Quartet--Under the Jasmine Tree (Apple) Horace Silver--Tokyo Blues (Blue Note, Liberty blue and white label, Van Gelder) For Jazz Lovers (emarcy)

I must be blind! I looked at the label again and it says Made in Holland.

Is the photo of the five Monks on the cover of the mono issue of this LP in black and white? I could have sworn reissues of this have his photo in color, but on this LP he is in black and white; in fact the only color on the cover is Brilliant Corners in red. I need to listen through headphones to see if I can detect any stereo image at all.

Clifford Jordan In the World (Strata East)

Stereo or "SpectroSonic"? It says Stereo on the jacket and label.
-
Today's lucky finds: Jimmy Smith--Bucket (Blue Note New York USA)--for $8. Monk--Brilliant Corners (Riverside, blue label)--somewhat abused but plays better than looks, I couldn't skip it for $5. What puzzles me is that it says Stereo, but I can't really tell the difference between channels if I go all the way from right to left.

Around 1973, a combination of Frank Zappa (Hot Rats especially), John Mayall's Jazz Blues Fusion (especially the live record featuring Ernie Watts), and seeing Miles Davis on TV led me to buying jazz lps, the first two that really grabbed me were The Best of Cannonball Adderley on Capitol, and Basic Miles.

Birthday spam! A few of your CDs seem to be sitting right next to my computer already.

Thanks. 50? When I subtract 2008 from 1958, I get 30.

Click on the Live link on the Pullen website and there's a mouthwatering listing of unreleased Mingus concert recordings with Pullen.

any important/interesting with or by Woody Shaw that's NOT on CD??
kh1958 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
all but one tracks have made it to cd though, if i didn't overlook anything on the two art blakey ojcs child's dance and mission eternal... are these albums worth getting? another shaw obscure (?) item that's out on cd which i have been wondering about is that 1977 mingus session with Woody Shaw, Jack Walrath (tp) Peter Matt (frh) Gerry Mulligan (ss, bars) Ricky Ford (ts) Paul Jeffrey (ts, arr) Lionel Hampton (vib) Bob Neloms (p) Charles Mingus (b) Dannie Richmond (d) is that worth checking out? those two albums master of art / night music aren't out on cd either... right? The Mingus with Woody Shaw is disappointing if your expectations are that it will be a great Mingus record (my reaction when it came out). At this point, Mingus' illness was affecting his playing. If you approach it, however, from the perspective that it is a loose jam session using various Mingus compositions, featuring solos by Woody Shaw, Gerry Mulligan and Lionel Hampton on those themes, after the passage of time, I now find it to be an enjoyable album. It's nice to hear these guys soloing on these compositions. I don't think it's that hard to obtain, I believe it has been issued on CD more than once. -
Does anyone pay attention to the Olympic Games anymore?

Whether you agree or not, the age limit for women's gymnastics is 16, so under 16 y.o. girls are ineligible. It's very clear that many (most?) of the Chinese gymnasts are 14 and 15. Huh. I didn't know that. I believe that 15 is within the rules, as long as they turn 16 by the end of 2008. -
Nice, as great as ECM cd's sound the good vinyl editions have this feel to them, in that you feel the music more than your just listening to it. It really hit me again this weekend listening to: My local HPB got in a group of ECMs in pristine condition, so I've bought a few. To Be Continued sounds amazing. As does the solo Steve Kuhn, Ecstasy. Still need the Bitter Funeral Beer Band. Did they have that one? I don't think so, as I would have grabbed anything with Don Cherry. It sounds like an interesting group.
