  1. I hadn't seen this Rollins before, but Dustygroove has it for sale right now-- There Will Never Be Another You Sonny Rollins $12.99 ... CD CD (Item 478034) ABC/Universal (Japan), 1965/1978 -- Condition: New Copy A great lost chapter in the career of Sonny Rollins -- material recorded live at MOMA in 1965, but unissued until this brief package in the late 70s! The work is right up there with Rollins' best for RCA at the time, and almost feels a bit like his live Village Vanguard material from Blue Note -- freewheeling, open, and with that continuously creative style that marks his solo talents at their best! The group's a quartet -- with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and either Billy Higgins or Mickey Roker on drums -- and tracks are longish, and have that arch mix of modern and traditional modes that we always appreciate in Rollins. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "To A Wild Rose", "Three Little Words", and "There Will Never Be Another You". © 1996-2008, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
  2. When I read this passage in the latest issue of the IAJRC Journal, talking about an exhibition of Timme Rosenkrantz photos, I had the sneaking suspicion that there was more to the story: "Duncan [scheidt] acquired the Rosenkrantz treasures through a working partnership with Frank Driggs. While the latter was compiling swing-jazz re-issues at Columbia, he was naturally in a position to borrow artists' photos, from which Duncan made negatives and prints. The images displayed were collateral for a loan from Frank to Timme. Duncan made his slides from the first generation prints made from Timme's negatives...."
  3. Luiz Bonfa -Brazilian Guitar (Capitol) Ralph Towner - Diary (ECM)
  4. December 26-- Lucky Peterson--Pearl
  5. Sonny Clark--Cool Struttin' (Blue Note, UA pressing)
  6. Jack Dejohnette--New Directions (ECM)
  7. Upon reading your initial message, I sold Phoenix "short."
  8. Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band, 1944-45 volume 2 (Good Time Jazz 10 inch).
  9. That is a beauty!
  10. Since the first two of those are on a Collectables double-CD , I presume you're not happy with the sound of that set . I have it , and while no CD can match Columbia vinyl of that era , the sound is decent especially in comparison to some of the earlier Collectables CDs . The third and final Columbia , Impressions Of Cleopatra is one I recently recommended in the flute thread . It is alas , only available on vinyl and would be most welcome on CD . I didn't know about the Collectibles reissue, but generally speaking, I don't buy that shoddy label.
  11. Birthday greetings!
  12. Paul Horn's early recordings on Columbia. The live Gary Burton with Larry Coryell on RCA. The live Lenny Breau LP on RCA.
  13. Bill Holman's Great Big Band (Capitol) Elvin Jones--Poly-Currents (Blue Note, black and blue label)
  14. Bobby Hutcherson--San Francisco (Blue Note, black and blue UA label)
  15. Lee Morgan--Caramba (Blue Note, Liberty, blue and white label)
  16. Wayne Shorter--Moto Grosso Feio (Blue Note)
  17. A better man than Robert Plant.
  18. Yesterday, I found a copy of John Patton's Accent on the Blues. But I didn't notice that it was warped. Damn.
  19. I don't know most of these records, but Kirk's We Free Kings is a fantastic record. That would be my first choice. Next, curiosity would lead me to the Phineas Newborn.
  20. Sidney Bechet--Bechet of New Orleans (RCA Vintage Series)
  21. Jelly Roll Morton--Mr. Jelly Lord (RCA Vintage Series).
  22. I only have Melvin Sparks Akilah and Houston Person Broken Windows on LP. All the rest are unfamiliar.
  23. I have a few on the label. On the good side: Mauger--The Beautiful Enabler. This recent release is a trio with alto saxophonisit Rudresh Mahanthappa (Vijay Iyer's frequent collaborator), Mark Dresser, and Gary Hemingway. Ze Eduardo/Jack Walrath--Bad Guys. On the other hand, I didn't care for Tony Malaby's Tamarindo.
  24. Yes, it is. What does "audition copy" mean? MG I've assumed this is the same as DJ copy--a copy given free to radio stations.
  25. You're right! I'm talking about Saturday the 29th. Is Schneider Sunday or Saturday? They are there both nights. Also on Saturday, Jean Michel Pilc at the Jazz Gallery. Here's a complete list: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/newyork/aaj_ny_200811.pdf
