    Mingus Big Band

I miss their first venue--the Fez underneath the Time Cafe--a basement club which was usually packed (the admission price was modest and so there was a younger crowd). The sound was pretty overwhelming there, and the band would often catch fire. The Iridium is a pricey club near Times Square--much of the crowd seemed to be tourists whose tour itinerary included visiting one jazz club and who probably never heard of Mingus. Also, it generally was not full there for the band. I'm hoping the Jazz Standard, which is a nicer and friendlier club than the Iridium, away from Times Square, will be an improvement.

  14. The world's dumbest crooked broker... Thieving Broker Is Bilked in Nigerian Fraud, Prosecutors Say By SEWELL CHAN For investors who lose money in the market, there is understandable concern. For those whose brokers make off with their cash, there is understandable outrage. But pity the poor clients of Michael Axel, who, the authorities say, not only stole $600,000 of their money, but wired most of it overseas, having fallen prey himself to a common Nigerian fraud scheme. Mr. Axel, 68, was charged with grand larceny and forgery, and if convicted of all charges, could face up to 15 years in prison, according to the Manhattan district attorney, Robert M. Morgenthau, who announced Mr. Axel’s arrest and indictment on Thursday. ... In 2005, officials said, Mr. Axel received an e-mail message from someone claiming to be a lawyer for a distant relative who had died and left Mr. Axel $8,750,000. In fact, the money didn’t exist and the e-mail message was part of a common fraud scheme. But prosecutors said Mr. Axel wired overseas more than $400,000 of the money that he had stolen, “apparently believing that the money would aid in the release of the supposed inheritance.” http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/...rosecutors-say/

  16. I have one Billy Poole CD--Confessin' the Blues, a Riverside OJC. I thought she was pretty good, a nice record--she sounds, at least on Confessin' the Blues, more like an r and b singer than a jazz singer. I would probably buy another recording by her if I found one.

  22. Not much on the horizon, but at least UTD comes through with a jazz concert or two every year: TRIBUTE TO THE TEXAS TENORS Series: Jazz Date: Friday & Saturday, January 30 & 31, 2009 Time: 8:00 p.m. Venue: Conference Center Ticket Prices: $25 each concert, or both for $40 Free to UTD Students with UTD Photo ID at the venue box office the night of the event. Discounts are available to faculty, staff, alumni, retirees and students. Please review our ticket policy or call our box office at 972-883-2552 for details. The School of Arts & Humanities and the City of Richardson join forces to present a high-quality two-day jazz festival, centered on the historical elements of jazz in the Dallas area. The “Texas Tenor” style of saxophone playing describes a player with a very “big” sound playing a somewhat blues-oriented style. Buster Smith is said to have pioneered the style by playing his tenor with a baritone sax reed, thereby giving him a bigger sound. Texas saxophonists associated with the “Texas Tenor Sound” include Buster Smith, David “Fathead” Newman, James Clay, Booker Ervin, John Hardee, King Curtis, Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb and Marchel Ivery. The Woody Herman Orchestra, directed byFrank Tiberi will headline the concert Friday night. The Texas Instruments Jazz Band, directed by Paul Westbrook, will open. On Saturday night, Young Texas Tenor saxophonists from Dallas/Ft. Worth will open for one of Texas’ most famous tenor saxophonists, David “Fathead” Newman, with local sidemen.
