Thanks. I missed your reply. So Dave Mackay and Vickey Hamilton's Rainbow is a gatefold but not Paul Gonsalves' Cleopatra? It's just not right.

Mosaic Sets but Especially Tina Brooks
kh1958 replied to Dan Gould's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I believe I first ran across Tina Brooks prior to the Mosaic Release on the LPs by Jimmy Smith, Cool Blues and on Jackie McLean's Jackie's Bag. Those made purchasing the Mosaic LP box set a no brainer. True Blue and Back to the Tracks are great (listened to the Mosaic LPs very many times), The Waiting Game is good, and Minor Move is just okay. -
FRIDAY APRIL 9 - SATURDAY APRIL 10 / LIVE STREAMED / 8PM EST Buy Streaming Pass Christian Sands (piano) Yasushi Nakamura (bass) Clarence Penn (drums) “In addition to being a technically adroit, harmonically sophisticated player, Sands is one of the most profoundly rhythmic young pianists in jazz today.” – Downbeat The incredible talent Christian Sands leads his trio with bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn in two nights of livestream concerts. Sands’ piano promise was recognized from a young age and his teachers have included Dr. Billy Taylor, Dave Brubeck, Jason Moran, and Vijay Iyer. He gained wide acclaim after Christian McBride added him to his group Inside Straight where he stayed for six years. The New York Times says, “Sands is already known as one of the most commanding pianists of jazz’s young generation, a gospel-infused technician with contemporary sensibilities and a deeply rhythmic approach.” Downbeat calls him, “an imaginative composer, a clever arranger and a skillful technician with a fluid style.” And, as for this trio WBGO extolls “the effortless hookup Sands has with bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn.” SMOKE SCREENS PRESENTS: THE CHRISTIAN SANDS TRIO

His set in the Blues Tent at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 2019 (two years ago!) was incredible. THIS WEEKEND: GEORGE CABLES TRIO "Cables established himself among the jazz cognoscenti by way of his work with Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and Bobby Hutcherson, among others. But he’s also put together his own fine albums for decades, establishing himself as an individualist whose comfort with bebop-based modern jazz has an unimpeachable stamp of authenticity." - The New Yorker The George Cables Trio will be available for a limited re-stream period, starting Friday at 8 PM EDT. The show, originally broadcast in September 2020, features Mr. Beautiful himself on piano, Essiet Okon Essiet on bass, and Billy Hart on drums. Tickets are $10; available on our website.

Mdou Moctar just announced a live stream on Bandcamp: Mdou Moctar - Live in Niamey, Niger The event is scheduled for: Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 8:00 PM EDT Add to Google Calendar | Add to other calendar Buy a ticket In winter 2020, the Mdou Moctar band met up in Niamey, the capital of Niger, to record a few songs in anticipation of the release of, Afrique Victime (May 21st on Matador Records). We were staying on the outskirts of town at a friend's home. One day, we quietly set up in front of the house to film a few songs. Despite our relative isolation, the noise of the band inevitably attracted a crowd. What started as the four of us simply playing a few songs for a camera turned into a three-night run of rowdy concerts, bringing in hundreds of eager listeners. Each night, kids from all over the city would line up at our door, rushing over after their final evening prayer. These performances were completely spontaneous and wholly unplanned. Thanks to the audience in Niamey, we were able to capture the spectacular energy of a typical Niamey concert for you. We're thrilled about it and hope you will be, too. Enjoy!

I suppose this is a nerdy record collector type of question, but I just listened this morning to my copy of his Impulse release Cleopatra, a gorgeous recording. My copy is a "second" red and black label pressing. Oddly, while the cover is laminated, it is not a gatefold cover. I don't think I've seen any other Impulse recording from its heyday (orange/black or red/black label) that is not a gatefold cover. Does this record exist in a gatefold cover?

MOKE SCREENS PRESENTS: THE SULLIVAN FORTNER TRIO FRIDAY APRIL 2 - SATURDAY APRIL 3 / LIVE STREAMED / 8PM EST Buy Streaming Pass Sullivan Fortner (piano) Adam Olszewski (bass) Kayvon Gordon (drums “Fortner’s remarkable accompaniment helps to bring the song from a dreamlike hush to a dramatic, impressionistic instrumental peak and back.” – Rolling Stone Sullivan Fortner leads his trio in two nights of livestreaming concerts. For the past decade, the Grammy Award-winning artist has been stretching his deep-rooted talents seeking connections among different musical styles that are at once deeply soulful and wildly inventive. The New York Times says, “Sullivan Fortner, a pianist born in New Orleans, has an extravagant amount of talent and a hyperactive flow on the keyboard. He mixes chords and crossing patterns and two-handed unison lines, all at a rapid clip. Sometimes he’ll play with both hands right around the center of the instrument, but you’ll swear that he’s using every key. At other times, he really is.”

Lonesome Dove is great. Might as well start there if you haven't read his books.

It's four recorders (soprano, alto, tenor and bass recorders), backed by George Duvivier, Paul Motian and Al Schackman (guitar). Bob Dorough is on tenor (recorder) and vocals on a couple of tracks and also wrote the charts, approaching it like he is writing for a sax section. So it's really like jazz charts for four recorders, with Bob on lead tenor; the others are not improvisers. There are lengthy humorous liner notes, which begin as two loose pages as inserts and continue on the back sleeve. Bob wants to call the group the MJQ, but realizes that "the Undertakers" might be unhappy with him. The other three recordists are members of the Manhattan Recorder Consort. It's the rare semi-humorous jazz album, but the music part is actually serious--it is good, if not something I would want to listen to often. The best piece to me was the version of Autumn Leaves for just the four recorders.
