  1. I'm a fan. Walt was just here at FSU as a guest last year and is a great teacher as well as a great player. Big sound, lots of vocabulary and assertive rhythmic groove. He has a brother Joel (pianist) who is also a great musician. You must be going through some Criss Cross titles, Tom!
  2. Not at all, because that "certain point" is where you can grow to understand how to love somebody who does things you don't understand, much less agree with. Believe me, kids will do that to you in a big way... I'm sure, except that my kids are short, hairy, walk on all fours, and don't speak clearly. So the apple didn't fall far from the tree, eh?
  3. Happy Birthday, Chris!
  4. I will admit to not knowing he was still around. RIP.
  5. OK, where does Larry keep the keys to the liquor cabinet?
  6. I'm a big fan of Nick Brignola (aka "The Upstate Burner"). I wouldn't say he's better than Pepper though- to me it's apples & oranges. He definitely created his own niche but I think that the precedent of Pepper's style was a point of reference for many modern bari players, whether they chose to acknowledge his influence or intentionally pursue a divergent path. I hear Pepper in Nick, Ronnie Cuber, Bruce Johnstone and Gary Smulyan, to name a few. I sure wish Nick was still around.
  7. I didn't realize there was any mystery remaining.
  8. Some other great brass player names: Art Blatt Dudley Highnote ...both bass trombonists.
  9. I think this thread is about the Stan Kenton set The Complete Capitol Recordings of the Holman and Russo Charts (Mosaic MD4-136), not about the Kenton Presents Bob Cooper, Bill Holman and Frank Rosolino set (Mosaic MD4-185). Yes, you're right. My bad. But the set of this thread is even better. I consider it essential band jazz. I actually thought you WERE talking about the Russo/Holman, John! There ARE some great Rosolino tracks including his feature "Frank Speaking". So I stand by my for Frank!
  10. Ha! Great minds think alike!
  11. (theater marqee behind Thad)
  12. This is certainly my impression. You try to have a discussion with someone about the underwhelming selection of streaming content on Netflix, and they get all defensive -- but look at the huge number of TV shows and 80s movies you can watch. Weird. Since most people are mostly interested in recent films and whether they can stream them, it seems perfectly legit to point out that Netflix isn't doing that well in this area, and my impression is that they will probably be even worse after their current contracts expire. Since I'm an Amazon Prime member I have access to their streaming service but unfortunately it's not compatible with my PS3 the way Netflix and Hulu+ are (and I really don't want to buy one of those Roku boxes). Having both Netflix and Hulu+ seems to be more than a little redundant and I might let one of them go- I'm waiting to see if Netflix gets their act together, but I'm not holding my breath. The movie selection on Hulu+ is REALLY odd- seems like a bunch of straight-to-video titles that I've never heard of. So far I'm less than impressed with both services- IMO they are not nearly has happening as people let on.
  13. No it don't! You should just get a big Play button -- hit that puppy and it plays! The little "Get Widget" blurb is only an ad for bloggers who want the same widget on their own blog... Yes, pushing the play button worked, no extra widget required (though it did take a moment to respond). Sounds good- great to hear Bruce again!
