  1. Larry, I for one found this conversation very interesting and enlightening, and I appreciate everyone's contribution. I appreciate hearing the opinions and the civility of the discussion. This certainly isn't a topic that's going to necessarily have a definitive resolution. This kind of stuff is what makes this place interesting! BTW, I love the clips. L & H are tearing up the changes on Airegin! Great to hear the details of the harmony, like setting up the Bb minor in the fifth bar with a movement from F minor to F7, and the modulations starting at bar 9.
  2. I'll take it off your hands! Tried to send a PM but it wouldn't go through- perhaps your inbox is full.
  3. She-who-must-not-be-named. Coultermort.
  4. I've always thought Billy Byers wrote really well for the Basie band. So many great writers- Thad, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Ernie Wilkins, Neal Hefti.....
  5. OK, that last clue turned on the light bulb.
  6. There are a variety of explanations for Miller's demise (most interesting is a story that the plane crash was a cover-up for his actually dying in a Paris brothel ) including that the plane a) went down in bad weather or b) was inadvertently struck by jettisoned bombs from Allied bombers . I don't think it was shot down, although who knows for sure. Off topic anecdote: one of my favorite Woody Herman one-liners was when someone would ask him to play a Glenn Miller tune. He had several responses, but my favorite was "When they find the plane I'll play his music!".
  7. Saw this as a cover for a Miles compilation over on eMusic. Thought it was a little odd.
  8. I did that. Holy crap. I love Savannah. I try to get there every summer.
  9. Jacqueline Bisset- I had a thing for her after seeing "The Deep"!
  10. This was the first RVG I ever bought, and when I A-Bd it with the older version I was amazed at how much better it sounded (Blakey's cymbals especially). Plus it was recorded the day before I was born.
  11. Rochester!
  12. No image that I can see, GA.
  13. The Buddy Terry Mainstrean albums are pretty wonderful. I'm surprised. Admittedly I've only heard one (Lean On Him) but that one was pretty dispensable. In addition to the Prestige title Jim mentioned, I'd recommend Pure Dynamite (which has Woody Shaw) and Awareness, which by the way are both available as mp3s at Amazon for CHEAP.
  14. I just hope my friend's brains didn't get all over my records. I hate when that happens.
  15. Have to say this series has really grown on me. I'm looking forward to watching Season 2.
  16. Well, maybe we should see if others have the same problem. I'm sure one of the cyber-heads around here can help. I can see the Howard Hessman photo just fine, BTW.
  17. No. I don't think it's me, but I'll reboot and check again.
  18. I don't see anything- just "posted image".
  19. I apologize for ruffling any feathers, but IMHO he often comes off as an "elitist" type, trying too hard to be hip (I feel the same way about Dick Cavett). I read his (Allen's) book Dumbth, which was his commentary on the "dumbing down" of America, and to me he kind of came off like a jerk. I do recognize his love of jazz and appreciate his efforts to further jazz on his shows, though! Just one person's opinion, that's all.
  20. I think you meant Shirley Scott. But on the topic of Rhoda (and organists w/big band), have you heard the record she did with Thad & Mel?
  21. Thanks for posting that, brownie! Great footage of the city, club, band and PeeWee! Steve Allen was such a dork, but he did promote jazz. I just cringe when he attempts to talk to the musicians (or any people, really).
