  1. Come on man, don't "harsh my high".
  2. Glad to hear you're getting out and having some fun, Lon! You deserve it!
  3. I never realized his first name was "Steve"............... edited to fix a dead link.......
  4. Just submitted it. Whew.... Thanks for all the help everyone. After some mentoring I ended up going a little different direction, but my main intent is still to write a bunch of new music, it's just that it will be original tunes instead of arrangements. I'll find out in January if I get it or not. The biggest challenege was to format it correctly and describe everything in that academic-speak. They're very picky about how you submit everything. I'm just glad to have the opportunity to apply- it will be a pretty sweet deal if it comes through.
  5. I love Fridays. Usually a light day at school and the whole weekend lies ahead. And I just handed in my grant proposal- that sucker took a lot of work. You have to format everything just so or they won't accept it. Ah, the joys of academia. Plus, no school on Monday (Veteran's Day). Sometime it's good to be a state employee. Anyone else off on Monday? Any exciting weekend plans? EDIT: ...and the best thing is that the weather has turned BEAUTIFUL in Tallahassee this week! Very cool temps, it actually got down to freezing the last couple of nights. It definitely makes up for the miserable summer nastiness.
  6. Good one my man!
  7. Fats Domino Minnesota Fats Memphis Slim
  8. That's something my son would have done, given the chance. When I was a kid a buddy of mine (no, it wasn't me) tried to ride his bike up a tree. You know, get a good run at it and actually think you might make it. This guy wasn't too bright but he was always entertaining. He would always take dares and such.
  9. Though socks can slip on carpet - I landed on my butt just this morning because of that! I slipped on some stairs a few years ago (they were carpeted but I had socks on) and landed really hard on my tailbone. I must have bruised it pretty good, because it hurt like hell to sit for about a MF month! Sitting in the car was a real drag.
  10. Additional discussion I'm looking forward to both of these.
  11. I'm surprised I ever made it through childhood. I was a total hyperactive dumbshit. When I was in fourth grade we were getting ready to go to the State Fair and I was excitedly jumping up and down on my parents bed (they weren't in it). I jumped too high, rebounded off the ceiling, hit the floor and broke my MF collarbone. No State Fair for me! I've also got several chipped teeth from various acts of recess stupidity. Sorry to hear about Zora, Jim. I'm sure it's horrible to see your little sweetie in pain. I'm sure she'll heal up fine- in the meantime, it may be time for some special treats!
  12. I gotcher Christmas spirit, right HERE!
  13. Highly recommended.
  14. Sunny has a longer form that includes other sections (and changes) but the first fours bars are the same as the chord sequence that's used during the solo section of Red Clay. I don't know if the similarity to the pop tune was intentional or coincidental on Freddie's part. Short answer: Yes
  15. Connnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnndicknnnnnnnnnn! Happy Birthday buddy! In your "stadium of life", may they pipe in artificial crowd noise! Wait, that doesn't sound good..... I think we all know what you want for your birthday. 19-0!!!!!
  16. Nope, I didn't go for it. But thanks for the heads up, always appreciated.
  17. Happy Birthday Paul!
  18. I didn't because I already had most of what's on it, which I realize was your point. I still think it's a good purchase for some who doesn't have all those sides, or someone who wants to hear all those Haynes performances organized in sequence (which of course is something one could do themselves). Probably not going to sell a ton of copies, but a nice compilation nonetheless.
  19. Huh? What? This damn job really curtails my music buying.
  20. I saw it at Borders some time ago- it's a nice box even if you do have some of the material. It really shows the amazing scope of Haynes' versatility, and also how his playing has remained fresh and relevant to this day. The man is still at the peak of his powers IMHO. A truly amazing musician, what a life he's had!
  21. Chewy! Where ya been? I like Stavinsky because he's good, not because it's "hip" to like him. And I don't interpret his music as "jazz", it's just Stravinsky being Stravinsky. I've played his "Ebony Concerto" and (like many of his works) while it does undeniably contain elements of jazz, it's not jazz, it's Stravinsky, and that in and of itself is pretty interesting to my ears. He swings hard in the way that only he can. Tchaikovsky swings hard, too. Never took that class, it was an elective.
  22. Hey TJ, welcome back!! Good to hear from you! Howz things? A couple good Joe and Woody outings occupy the JoeHen Milestone box- "Live at the Lighthouse" and "In Pursuit of Blackness". The Joe box has recently been discussed here.
  23. Yes! Cleveland rocks!
