Up For Holiday Fun!!

So, anybody have big plans this year? Any big menu ideas? Turducken, anyone? I'm doing the solo hang again this year. My first Thanksgiving in Florida. Even though I'm on my own again, I'm very grateful for my new job. The insanity and upheaval of the last year and a half is starting to fade a bit. I've decided to at least cook up some basic goodies- I'm roasting a small turkey and fixing some mashed taters and the requisite green bean casserole. Might have to do up a little punkin' pie too. I'm also grateful for this board and the friends I have here. I'm glad Jim has continued to provide us with a great place to hang, and I appreciate all the knowledge gathered here. I know this place must at times be a pain in the ass for Jim, and I'm grateful that we're still here. Let's enjoy it while we can. I still think that what unites us, our love of music, is greater than anything that divides us. I know that when I have been down, the music is always what saves me. Lots of things to be thankful for, like Zora's recovery from her accident, Jazzypaul's new daughter, the release of the On the Corner box , Sangrey's 25K posts (the majority of which have been outstanding with only a few disturbing detours), the upcoming Quincy Mosaic, just to name a very few. Also best wishes for Lon and his wife, and any other members who have been going through trials in their lives. And safe travels to all. I'm sure pretty much anyone here must be having a more exciting Thanksgiving than me, so let's hear about it! Cheers, everyone!

Jazzypaul becomes a daddy!

Apparently he did, Al! Congrats, Paul! -
I second all the previously mentioned recordings and add this one (not a Verve, but not to be missed): A great session w/Joe Zawinul, Philly Joe Jones, Sam Jones (or Richard Davis) and Thad Jones. Very nice.

Pats have barely broken a sweat and it's 14-0. Wondering if Free still has that "feelin'?" I think it was just a little gas. -

Im feelin' it........NE is goin' down in Buffalo! -
Please fill us in (the uninitiated) re: Conn = 'dick' There's a running joke in the Live Chat Room that as soon as someone logs off the system, the rest of the group (typically Conn, Free For All, Noj, Aggie and others) types in "[whoever] is a dick". I"m not sure if Conn started it, but let's say he did anyway. As is usually the case when explaining something humorous, "you had to be there" (and not completely sober). ......and also, lest I forget; Conn ---------->dick. :rsmile:

best/classic versions of "What's New?"
Free For All replied to cannonball-addict's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Here's a trivia question for you, gentlemen: What's New is a tune where the bridge is the same as the "A" section, but up a fourth. Can anyone think of any other jazz tunes that share this characteristic? -
Jack has been the gracious host of many a past "lost weekend".

best/classic versions of "What's New?"
Free For All replied to cannonball-addict's topic in Miscellaneous Music
There is a swinging version of What's New on the relatively-obscure-but-excellent Dexter side called A Day in Copenhagen. The front line features Dex with Dizzy Reece and Slide Hampton (who did all of the outstanding arrangements on this recording from 1969). If you don't have this one I highly recommend seeking it out. Edit: ....and another one I just thought of is on Jack Wilkins' You Can't Live Without It, a straight ahead date with the Brecker Bros. Another very tasty session worth hearing. Also, John Fedchock did a nice chart on it for Woody's band. Bone feature of course! -
Monk Riverside set CHEAP on amazon
Free For All replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It is pathetic, isn't it? I mean, over 3800 posts on a damn internet board? I really can't imagine anything more pathetic than that! Oh, wait.........sorry, man..... BTW, did Winkie have a stroke or something? -

Up for closure. So did ANYONE score this box at the low price? -
For some reason I've never been able to get the auto-login thing to work. I'd love to figure that out.
-
That's interesting. I just assumed the computer automatically sorted things out as far as what was eligible for the discount.

If you liked that band, be sure to pick up the JazzIcon DVD of Quincy and the band in Belgium and Switzerland in 1960. Great stuff for the ages.

Hank O'Neal was involved in producing the SS Norway jazz cruises for awhile. When I was on Woody's band (in the 80s, when Woody was still around) we did several of them. Usually they came after we had done several months on the bus w/very few nights off. The cruises were a great hang for the band, we played a few gigs but had lots of time to hang, which we did to no end. Some of the artists we backed up included Cab Calloway, Joe Williams, Mel Torme, Dizzy, Clark Terry, Flip Phillips, Ruby Braff, Scott Hamlton and Al Cohn, among others. It was great to get to meet, play with and hang with those guys. We would stay up all night (the "crew" bar was a favorite place) and do cruise ship stuff during the day, stops in Nassau, St. Thomas, St. Martin etc. There was a great place for margaritas up at the top of a mountain in St. Thomas. Often the guys in the band would bring their wives and/or girlfriends along- a couple times Maria Schneider came along, when she was hanging with John Fedchock. Great times! I miss those days...... Usually by the time it was over we were exhausted (as well as lightly breaded and fried). Big fun though! Great memories.
