Maria Schneider - forget looking in your CD shop!
Free For All replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in New Releases
She just showed up in the mail. I'll be checking it out later today. Looks good. I'll be interested to hear what eveyone thinks. I have heard some of the pieces already (Three Romances) when she guested at KU a few years ago. Great music! This one will definitely require "focused listening"! -
Absolutely. I do that all the time. Especially when shopping online. For that matter I can never go into a store and buy just one CD. Always have to get two or more. I usually make a quick trip through the alphabet looking for the titles on my list (I have to make a list and keep it in my wallet, otherwise I never remember) and then I will go back and start again looking for suprises (i.e. compulsive purchases). And I prefer to do this alone, no distractions.

Every July 4th I feel sorry for the pets. The vast majority of dogs HATE and fear fireworks just like they don't like thunder and other sudden loud noises. It's really torture for their sensitive ears.

Passing chord, yes, it often is (as in the Funny Valentine- type of progression you refer to) but it also makes a terrific tonic chord. Examples that come to mind are Chelsea Bridge, Nica's Dream and Harlem Nocturne. I'm sure there are many more. The major seventh is often used in tandem with the major sixth, which alludes to the ascending melodic minor scale.

November 26th, 1978. I remember hearing about it on the radio, home from college for Thanksgiving. Yes, this is a very sad story. Frank must have been in a pretty dark place. One of his sons survived the shooting, but has some physical problems although I'm not sure exactly what. I think he may be blind among other things. Another thing, I'm not sure if it's true, but I heard Frank's wife Diane had just arrived home and saw a flash come from the house. In spite of all this nastiness, I still am able to listen to and enjoy Frank's music. His playing has such an incredible spirit that I just can't write it off. There are several players I enjoy to whom music seemed to be the only bright spot in their lives. In spite of bios and hearsay that may or may not be accurate I still listen to the music of Chet. And Getz. And Art Pepper. I also have friends to whom music seems to be the only source of happiness- otherwise, they're a wreck. Pretty hard to beat what Frank did, though. The majority of his close friends apparently didn't see it coming (although some had remarked that Frank's incessant clowning sometimes made them wonder if there might be something being concealed) and were outraged that he would take his own life, and ESPECIALLY that he would try to take his kids with him. Hard to forgive that. All that being said, my feeling is don't let this sad story prevent you from enjoying some really great music.

Alfred Molina. He's done some good work in films. He was great in Chocolat. Sounds like Spidey 2 is worth seeing!

Yes! I was going to mention the long version of 52nd Street Theme. Sonny goes a full 12 rounds on that one.

Just the other day, I myself was attempting to free a aizoji temple. I guess I need more fibre in my diet.

1422 is my house number! Oh yeah? If you subtract MY house number from 1422 you get 318. 3 goes into 18 six times, and six is the sum of the numbers in my address. If you multiply 6 by half of 1422 (711) you get 4266. Add the first two numbers in 4266 and you get 666, the bad bad number. Mere coincidence? Perhaps. Might I be crazy? Perhaps. Or maybe I'm so sane that.....that.....that I'm........NOT.........crazy.

Don't forget Free For All! An all-time favorite. Might as well wait 'til the RVG comes out. Also: The Big Beat and Jazz Messengers with Monk. Hard to limit suggestions! So many good'uns! EDIT: my lack of speed has made this post redundant......see above

2004 International Trombone Festival
Free For All replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
OK, obviously zero interest in this topic, but I'm going to report anyway. Just got back from Ithaca, had a great time! I heard some AMAZING trombone playing in every style imaginable. Got to play with Wycliff Gordon, Jiggs Whigham, Ingo Luis and Ludwig Nuss. The last two are from Germany and while I had heard of them, I hadn't heard them play before. Are any of our German members familiar with these guys? All the players were outstanding- each had his own style and "thing". The final concert was a big band event- the "house band" was the Army Blues. They played some of my charts and really sounded good. Wycliff is an amazing musician and a hellova nice guy too. The Army Blues band is surprisingly good right now- I guess there was a lot of turnover recently and the band is now stocked with better players and really swings! Also some great trombonists in that group- Matt Neiss and Harry Watters were tearing it up. Also heard some young players who were winners of various jazz and legit scholarships. I wish I'd had as much together at an early age as these kids do. Good to hear that the trombone still has a future. A week of trombone overload, definitely- my head's still spinning. But it was a lot of fun. Almost makes all that practicing worthwhile. -
I wonder if a young Free For All is on this Woody Herman date??? Paul??? If it's the one I think it is, yes, I'm on it. I haven't heard or seen it, but I'd be curious to hear what the audio quality is like. Hmm....I don't remember getting paid for that...................

Organissimo (dry) t-shirt contest
Free For All replied to Upright Bill's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
My only request is that they are available in "mutant" sizes. Seems like when I get festival t-shirts (especially in Europe) the XXL is like a US medium. They then become jammies for Mrs. Free For All. -

A very nice target for the snipers from AAJ! -
One of the greatest of all time. He transcended genres- he was loved by fans of blues, jazz, pop, R+B and country alike. For me all those categories are unnecessary- I'm just a Ray Charles fan. I've found something to like in pretty much everything he's done. He's seen me (and I would expect many of us) through good and bad times and countless road trips. Ray is great for road trips. Thank you Mr. Charles! RIP

Woody Herman used to delight in telling a rather morbid but affectionate story about Red. It seems the band was invited to a wealthy patron's house for a post-concert hang. Red, who was apparently well-oiled at the time, sat down on a couch on what he thought was a pillow. He heard a muffled "yip" and realized he had just sat on the patron's small dog, who did not survive the encounter. Red just put a pillow over the expired canine and split. Yes, it is a sad tale (especially to us dog lovers), yet Woody told it with great aplomb and it was hard not to laugh.

How Long Has Jazz Been In Your Ears?
Free For All replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Started noticing it being played in my home around 1967 (I was nine or so). Started "getting it" around 1972. Chronically infected 1974. Diagnosed as "incurable" around 1976. Thanks dad. -
This is what I love about this place. Nowhere else in my life will I ever hear this sentence uttered.

I liked the Tower in Chicago (on Clark). Between it and (better yet) Jazz Record Mart I kept my Visa card maxed out. I knew the jazz guy at Tower, though- that always helps. Though I also knew Ron Bierma (sp?) at JRM. So Jim, you're saying that Tower is like the Wal-Mart (or Starbucks) of CD retail?
