A recording of a January 1971 performance by louis Armstrong at the National Press Club in Washington is coming out on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. It was one of Satchmo's last appearance before his death six months later. Story in the Washington Post yesterday.

In New York (1965), the Wayne Shorter quartet with Herbie Hancock, Richard Davis and Joe Chambers (no recording of those four together), also the Gary McFarland sextet with Joe Farrell and Eddie Gomez. At Slug's (1967), Jackie McLean quartet with Lamont Johnson, Scotty Holt AND Rashied Ali.

Jimmy Rowles 'Plays Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn' (CBS France)

Caught Earl Freeman several times when he played in Paris in the early 70s. There were a lot of outstanding musicians here at the time. Can't say I heard anything by Freeman then that would have me add his name to the list.

I've kept a diary of the shows I have seen. Wish I would have done that... Same here! I attended my first jazz shows some 60 years ago... Most memorable ones would include Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Sonny Rollins trio at Club Saint-Germain in 1958, Charles Mingus Sextet at Salle Wagram in 1964, Cecil Taylor at Fondation Maeght in 1969...
