Jackie McLean was one of my early idols when I was getting into jazz. Got the Prestige albums shortly after they came out. Loved the music in the raw that exploded on those sessions. Still get kicks out of them...
...but I tend to prefer the BN ones. McLean got maturity (thanks to Mingus?) while keeping his spontaneity. 'Let Freedom Ring' was the album I listened to over and over.
Was delighted to catch him for the first time back at NY Slug's when I visited the club with Cecil Taylor in 1967. Rashied Ali was the drummer of the quartet. Heard McLean at the Paris New Morning much later.
I miss the chances to listen to McLean live!
Not only a great arranger but also a great A&R man. He was responsible for signing Miles Davis, Lennie Tristano and others to Capitol Records in the late 40s.
Speaking of the Great Jo Jones, has anyone read 'Rifftide: The Life and Opinion of Papa Jo Jones' yet?
Rifftide Papa Jo Jones
It looks interesting but does it deliver?
are any of the Decca sides included in Vol 10 ?
The following two Decca sessions are included:
- November 16, 1941 (the one with 'Leap Frog'),
- April 17, 1942 (the one with 'I Never Knew')
Thanks for the Amazon link.
I havd been told there was a problem with the Boswell box and refrained from purchasing it since I have three of the Nostalgia Arts CDs!
I do not have the Mosaic Decca box since the Frémeaux sets cover all that was on the box but I find those broadcasts very enjoyable with Armstrong in full power! There is even an excellent version of 'In the Mood' (penned by Joe Garland who was in Satchmo's band)!
