  1. Wilbur Ware 'The Chicago Sound' (Riverside, mono, blue label)
  2. New Zealand won 8-7 in the final match. Not a very great match... at least the French 15 were not ridiculous
  3. Did a quick review of the whole thread and failed to see this classic cover
  4. I have several of the Status LPs but can't remember seeing any followup liner notes on them
  5. Billie Holiday 'Velvet Mood' (Verve, mono) with Sweets, Carter, Rowles, Kessel, John Simmons and Larry Bunker
  6. Leave some space for Charles Tyler and Giuseppe Logan, two avantgardists from the era you're dealing with! They should even have quite a large place
  7. I do a lot of walking in Paris. A favorite app... Paris Avant
  8. Happy Birthday
  9. The right attitude?
  10. Bud Powell 'Strictly Powell' (RCA Victor, mono)
  11. Also worth checking is: The Timex All-Star Jazz Concert where many of the big names were gathered (even includes Paul Desmond briefly soloing next to Louis Armstrong!)
  12. Miles Davis 'The Complete Live Recordings 1948-1955' (United Archives), the 1952 sessions
  13. Roswell Rudd 'Inside Job' (Arista Freedom)
  14. I was lucky to hear that two-trombone band on several occasions and it was an experience! Also it was the last time I heard Shepp reach that intense level!

    Ralph Sutton

Glad to see there are fans of Sutton, a very neglected musician. The St.George Church double CD recital is a delight! Also like the Suttons released by Storyville. The quartet date with Ruby Braff is an old favorite!

    Gigi Gryce

Real Gone Jazz have released recently similar sets by Hank Mobley, Red Garland, Kenny Dorham and others. The sets look good. No idea how they sound. But they are darn cheap... The Gryce box seems to be a true bargain!
