  1. Nora Kelly also wrote the liner notes for Maiden Voyage... Same trip!
  2. Happy Birthday, Paul May the Light shine bright on this special day
  3. Happy Birthday
  4. A Very Happy Birthday, Daniele
  5. Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis 'Trackin'' (Prestige, blue label, stereo) with Don Patterson, Paul Weeden, George Duvivier and Billy James
  6. A very fine pianist. Wish he had recorded more. Liked what he brought to the Jackie McLean/René McLean Ensemble!
  7. Damn A beautiful and intelligent actress! Lked her in Bertolucci'sLa Luna and Constantin Costa-Gravas Hanna K and - of course - in An Unmarried Woman.
  8. Missed that when it was posted. Thanks for catching this, bichos! Will include the full clip in my next DVD from INA. The accompanying text is wrong. This was not filmed during her dramatic appearance at the Olympia but a few days later (probably at le Moulin de la Galette) when she looked much better!
  9. Better (for me) than Love Supreme. Agree. Fresh listening to Crescent brings new perspectives to the quartet's playing. It was at its creative peak by then. As much as I enjoy A Love Supreme, repeated listening emphasize the contemplative aspects of the musicians' improvisations.
  10. Jimmy Witherspoon 'Roots' (Reprise, mono, promotional copy white label) 'featuring Ben Webster'
  11. The Leon Eason session seems to be the only recorded evidence of Dottie Dudley's organ work! Bad deal
  12. Intégrale Louis Armstrong 'I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues, 1931-1933' (Frémeaux & Associés), discs 2 and 3
  13. Along with the official release of the Jazz aux Champs-Elysées CD, INA has added various broadcasts from the radio program to its audio file including this 1964 interpretation of Naima by Eric Dolphy. Other Jazz aux Champs-Elysées broadcasts that have just been added include performances by Bobby Jaspar, Kenny Drew, Donald Byrd, Jean-Luc Ponty and others... INA audios
  14. John Coltrane 'Crescent' (Impulse, orange label, mono)
  15. Interesting recollections from Mario Pavone! From The Hartford Courant today.
  16. Check Berlioz Requiem. Grande Messe des Morts. You'll get an earful when you listen to it. Favorite version I heard (a long time ago) was Charles Munch on DGG! Munch brought fire to that music!
  17. The only material that has surfaced from that session remains: - Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams (two takes) - Me and You - Mysterious Blues - Body and Soul (two takes) - R and R This was the content of the Complete Candid Mingus Mosaic!
  18. The Cafe Society broadcast was included in volume 4 of the Art Tatum Live series from Storyville (and later in the Art Tatum 10CD box from Storyville).
  19. These are from a September 1956 Rolf Ericsson/Benny Bailey record session for Metronome. Part of the session (but neither 'Duo' nor 'Ohio') was included in the Lonehill Tommy Potter's Hardfunk CD!
  20. Mosaic didn't issue Destry Rides Again after Randy Weston asked that it not be reissued. Sad and disgusting that an outfit like FreshSounds would issue it against his wishes. (I'm assuming here that he didn't change his mind in the interim.) I assume they just did not bother to ask Weston if it was OK with him!
  21. The Lee Konitz Duets (Milestone, stereo)
  22. There are a number of highly recommended sets among those JSPs. Would like to bring attention to the Hoagy Carmichael 'The First of the Singer Songwriters' set. It even contains material which had not been published before. Transfers and audio restoration by John R T Davis and Doug Pomeroy!
  23. Jean-Pierre Lion died last month. He was 62. His Bix Biography remains the best book on the musician. At the time of his deah, he was working on a biography of King Oliver. Hope the book will be published. If it's as carefully researched as the Bix bio, it will be one of those must-read jazz books.
  24. Only one 45 came out of Eason's BN session. The one you mention. The rest remains unissued
