  1. The Cuscuna/Ruppli BN Label Discography (1988 edition) mentions this: This session was recorded in stereo but the stereo version remains unissued, except the version of take 2 used in the German issue, which is the stereo one The liner notes for the Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions (where the session is in stereo) adds: The original mono master of Mighty Moe and Joe was tk 2 with the tenor and trumper solos from tk 3. The unedited tk 2 was issued in stereo on Box 3 of 40 Years of Jazz - The History of Blue Note. It was also issued on the first stereo CD release of this album (J)TOCJ-1568. That CD is also missing the insert ending for Double Explosure.
  2. This is part of a forthcoming series of 3CDs sets that was mentioned on October 25 on the Jazz in Paris thread. I have not seen details yet but I am inclined to think those sets will have only material already issued in other Jazz in Paris CDs!
  3. That's one which has always intrigued me. The affinity of Waldron with Satie is self evident. A pretty unusual (and rare) item. It's been reissued several times on CD in Japan!
  4. This is the INA disc (there was no decent image avalable until now!)...
  5. Chet Baker Pacific Jazz Studio Recordings, LP 3
  6. Bill Watrous 'Funk'n Fun' (Yupiteru Records) with Art Pepper, Russ Freeman,Bob Magnuson and Carl Burnett
  7. A Very Happy Birthday
  8. I have purchased several of the albums from Smalls Live after I started this thread and found the sound on them excellent. So was the music. A great small label!
  9. I admit... it does look better image taken at the Jardins du Luxembourg near the French Senate!
  10. Many thanks to all! There were several highlights for my birthday. The jazz highlight was the appearance - ahead of its official publication - of the Jazz aux Champs-Elysees CD from INA that includes two new performances by Lester Young. Could not ask for anything better!
  11. That was reissued a few years ago by EMI in their Americans Swinging in Paris series
  12. Count Basie 'At Newport' (Verve, mono) especially for Lester Young's solo on 'Polka Dots and Moonbeams'
  13. Hank Mobley has been identified as the 'unknown' tenor player who joined in on the proceedings on the first track 'Blues Jam/Now's the Time'?!? Will have to relisten to the music, a lo-fi tape recording...
  14. A couple of Neil Fujita classic cover designs... photos by Don Hustein illustration by Ben Shahn
  15. What a sweet way to start the day and a new year! Thanks to all the wellwishers
  16. Enough Henderson on Victor for French RCA to release a double CD a few years ago...
  17. The main problem at 1960 Newport was the riots at the main even that cut short the festival. In the mainstream press, news about those riots eclipsed the other events at the scene. As for the Cliff Walk Manor festival, Gene Lees's account indicate it was pretty disorganized. Lees wrote: Hastily assembled, unpublicized it drew a sad little audience of 40 to 50 persons the first day. The music was provided by Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman and their groups. Lees later mentions 'On its peak night, the rump festival drew about 500 persons'.
  18. Philly Joe Jones Dameronia Featuring Johnny Griffin 'Look Stop Listen' (Uptown)
  19. Did a search a few days ago. If you have the RCA Centenial box and the forthcoming Ellington Mosaic box, you have every official records made by the Duke in the '30s. Only session missing is the July 1933 date recorded in London for British Decca. That session is on the Jazz Unlimited CD 'The British Connection 1933-1940'.
  20. Few people here remember the 1954 World Cup final. A legend in sports lore. The best allaround team - Hungary - was the clear favorite of the competition but they lost to West Germany in the final match in Berne. A stunning defeat! Now it turns out the West German team was on dope... AFP story Ferenc Puskas, in black jersey at left, congratulates the 'winners'...
  21. The August 18, 1960 issue of Downbeat covered the Newport jazz festival and the Cliff Walk Manor events with two detailed reports. First one (by John S. Wilson) was titled 'Newport The Music', the other (by Gene Lees) was titled 'Newport The Trouble'. Wilson detailed the Newport festival, Lees covered the going-ons at Cliff Walk and took the photos that illustrated his article, including a superb shot of Eric Dolphy practising the flute at the seacoast that graces the magazine front cover! The Cliff Walk festival was a one-time affair, as far as I know.
  22. Hope you had a great birthday
  23. The Charlies Mingus Birdland Broadcasts were detailed on this site! Presume the 3CD set will have all that has been available on the various bootlegs!
  24. Art Blakey 'Golden Boy' (Colpix France)
  25. The real hero of World Cup 2010 is dead AP Bulletin So long, Paul!
