  1. I'ld rather trust Michael Fizgerald's facts rather than Wayne Shorter's memory. In his Chronology of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Fitzgerald indicates that 'While frequently dated as 1963, I think it more likely that this session occurred in 1964 after the Indestructible dates. The musical Golden Boy opened on Broadway on October 20, 1964. Blakey's Golden Boy was album of the week December 13, 1964 in the New York Post. Michael Fitzgerald Blakey chronology It would be very strange for a jazz group to record music from a Broadway show months in advance of the show premiere. My vinyl copy (on Colpix France) is no help at all about determining when this was recorded!
  2. Coming up very soon this 3CD set from Rare Live Recordings: Question now is: will Sue take revenge?
  3. Recorded in 1964 with: Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, tp Curtis Fuller, tb, Julius Watkins, french horn, Bill Barber, tuba, James Spaulding, as, Wayne Shorter, t, Charles Davis, bar, Cedar Walton, p, Reggie Workman, b, Art Blakey, dr. Originall recorded for Colpix.
  4. Svensk Jazzhistoria Vol. 9 'Swedish Jazz 1960-1964' (Caprice, disc 4)
  5. Wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be an East Coast group
  6. These 3CD sets from the Jazz in Paris series will be out in November. They are probably reissues of previous JinP releases. No details yet... Hope they will have corrected the spelling of Django's name by then
  7. Kenny Drew 'Home is where the soul is' (Xanadu) with Leroy Vinnegar and Frank Butler
  8. Here is what these 'La Grande Histoire du Jazz' sets (25 CDs each) look like: Some details from Amazon.co.uk (nothing yet at Amazon.fr)!
  9. Nothing much really new except for a couple of Capitol albums (including Hawkins 'Gilded Hawk') and another reissue of part of the UA catalogue (plus that 'Year of the Iron Sheep'). Sorry to sound blasé but looks to me like the TOCJ people are going for another recycling of past reissues. Will wait for the FreshSound people to really dig into long unavailable items (they are reissuing the Randy Weston 'Destry Rides Again' UA album that was left out of Weston's Mosaic Select!).
  10. Looks like it is! Great cover by Frank Gauna with a photo by Chuck Stewart! I still have the original LP (great fan of McIntyre here).
  11. I have the utmost respect for tuba players. Harvey Phillips was a master in that field. Wish I had heard those alltuba gatherings when they played Christmas carols at Rockefeller Center. What a feast for the ears that must have been!
  12. First time I hear that Tadd Dameron played trombone! Might be him. I'm with BBS, probably a gimmick for a photo op! The identifications of the other people in the photo are correct.

    Marion Brown

Marion Brown plays Body and Soul on that album I was listening to earlier today. Not bad at all!
  14. Marion Brown 'Back to Paris' (Free Lance) with Hilton Ruiz, Jack Gregg and Freddie Waits
  15. Review in The Washington Post today. Anybody read this yet?
  16. I agree. It's a great price for this box I disagree. Don't think it's one of Bill Evans' best performances. The trio was much better inspired on the Paris concerts (Edition One and Edition Two) that came out on Elektra. That San Francisco gig did not turn out to be a very happy one and it shows!
  17. Trust TCM will show these soon on their channel here. Great films in the lot!

  19. Happy Birthday
  20. The Bobby Jaspar Quartet 'At Ronnie Scott's 1962' (Mole Jazz)
  21. The 'Les Trésors du Jazz' seems dead by now. But there is hope... understand André Francis and Jean Schwartz are working on a soon-to-be-released series of sets 'La Grande Histoire du Jazz' that is going to be distributed by Le Chant du Monde. Nothing yet on Le Chant du Monde website.

    Marion Brown

He is far from conventional on his only recorded appearance (Barney Wilen's Auto Jazz)! I heard him several times with Marion Brown and was impressed by his out playing!
  23. Thad Jones-Mel Lewis box, LP 5 (6 to follow)
  24. Coleman Hawkins 'Make Someone Happy' (Moodsville cover, Prestige blue label, mono)
