  1. Buddy Rich confronts Jerry Lewis in a scene from the 1959 film 'Visit from a Small Planet'. Buddy Rich musicians include Frank Socolow, Joe Maini, Russ Freeman, Don Bagley, Jack Costanzo Jerry Lewis-Buddy Rich The girl dancer is Barbara Lawson!
  2. Those sides were originally recorded for the Swing label which leased them to Transition. The complete sessions are included in the Original Vogue Masters reissue of Lucky Thompson The Complete Recordings, vol. 2
  3. John Coltrane 'Lush Life' (Prestige, yellow label) A permanent favorite!
  4. A classic! Most probably Reid Miles' mistake. The liner notes to the original LP spell Cranshaw's name correctly. But not the labels!
  5. From The New York Times ... The Jazz Loft Project More photos
  6. Would be interested in that too! The booklet escaped from the album, went its way decades ago and has not been seen since
  7. Good to think that there will at least one French team in the semifinals. Since I'll be drinking to the team's victory, let me say that I am a Bordeaux man rather than a Beaujolais one! Will root for Yohann Gourcuff and his teammates!
  8. Mais oui! Much love for the set. And for Quincy's band. Spent my last days in civilian life back in early 1960 attending the band's daily rehearsals at the Paris Alhambra theater. Listening to the band and meeting all those musicians enabled me to keep my mind away from more than depressing thoughts at the idea of being drafted in the French Army to fight its war (not mine) against Algerian rebels! The Mosaic box is a splendid tribute to the band.
  9. The Return of Howard McGhee (Bethlehem/Polydor Japan, mono) with Sahib Shihab, Duke Jordan, Percy Heath, Philly Joe Jones
  10. Never cared much for Fess Parker. The Davy Crockett saga went past my youth. The only thing I really remember about him is that his name was an embarrassment in France. Fess had the same sound as 'fesse' (buttocks). His name had to be changed to Fier Parker in France. Fier (proud) was more becoming to an American hero! The actor Fier Parker was quite popular here after the name change!
  11. The sound of the Atlantic albums has been criticized on previous threads. I was a participant in the panning. The Atlantic Coltrane LPs did miss the crispness and naturalness of the albums from companies like Prestige and BN. I have stayed away from the Atlantic CD reissues with the exception of the Heavyweight box because it contained previously unissued material. Bought this when it was released and refused to spend more money to purchase the LP box which came out shortly later!
  12. Nothing yet on their website but Fresh Sound has just released a fresh series of vinyls. The label is Jazz Workshop. The LPs are on 180 gram vinyls. Limited to 500 copies. With replicas of the original covers and liner notes. Among the titles in the Jazz Workshop series: - Bill Barron/Ted Curson ' Now Hear This!' - Paul Chambers 'Chambers' Music' - Eddie Costa 'Guys and Dolls' - Benny Golson 'Just Jazz' - Tubby Hayes & Ronnie Scott 'The Couriers of Jazz' - Bill Holman 'The Fabulous Bill Holman' - Art Pepper 'The Return of Art Pepper" - Wayne Shorter 'Wayning Moments' ... and several more. No idea yet on how they sound!
  13. Jimmy Knepper 'Cunningbird' (SteepleChase) with Al Cohn, Roland Hanna, George Mraz, Dannie Richmond Love that album! Superb sound by Elvin Campbell!
  14. Excellent! Digging for my copy of the same to spin it! Shouldn't be too hard, right? It's on the "J" floor of your LP warehouse! Most of the vinyls that are lined on a wall of my 'music room' are not too hard to find. They are in alphabetical order. The problem is locating the others that are stacked as best as humanly possible in no specific order The PJJ Dracula was in its proper section Now spinning: Richie Kamuca 'Richard Kamuca Quartet 1976' (Jazzz) with Mundell Lowe, Monte Budwig and Nick 'Cirello' (as ortographed in the liner notes)

    Sal Salvador

Kenton Presents: Sal Salvador is part of the Connoisseur CD Sal Salvador Quintet/Quartet Tom 1960 started this thread with, that's why I didn't mention it in my post above. Thanks for pointing this out. Was unaware of that reissue. Another BN Conn that has eluded me. Never saw it! I have this date on the BN 10-incher that came out in 1975 when BN/UA rereleased the BLP5000 series in exact replica.

    Sal Salvador

My favorite Sal Salvador is the Capitol LP that was part of the Kenton Presents series That was the first Sal Salvador/Eddie Costa collaboration. It included a splendid 'Yesterdays' - one of Costa's favorite tune - in a Bill Holman arrangement. Understand it is part of one of the Spanish double CD that John L mentions (never saw that one!).
  17. Damn Never noticed that warning. That McCoy Tyner was released after Francis Wolff's death when Blue Note was but a shadow of what it once was!
  18. The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis box, LP 3. LP 4 will be next
  19. Excellent! Digging for my copy of the same to spin it!
  20. Ubu, your guess about the piano playing on 'Coral Rock' sounds OK to me.
  21. I knew all along that a deep study of non-black vinyls would only bring back troubles and bring me back to the philosophy studies I tried to skip as often as I could a long time ago
