Monk with Dizzy Gillespie's big band, 1946 Spotlite
brownie replied to ghost of miles's topic in Offering and Looking For...
When these recordings surfaced, the pianist with Gillespie's band was identified as John Lewis or Thelonious Monk. John Lewis was the piano player who replaced Monk with the band after Dizzy could not accept any longer Monk showing up late too often. Listening to the available material, the presence of Monk (a lot of comping and a few solos, all too short) is unmistakable! Will be very much looking for the release of the material on Uptown! -

It took nearly a month for The New York Times to report on the death of Art Davis! http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/21/arts/music/21davis.html and they did not even bother to write an obituary of their own. Just relied on the AP newsstory...

The Spotlite club was located at 56 West 52nd St. It opened in December 1944. Clark Monroe was the owner of the place. Doris Sydnor worked as a hatcheck girl at the club where Charlie Parker met her in 1945. They were married in 1948.

The lowprofile team of Lorient defeated champion Lyon 2-1 this weekend. Nothing seems to be working for Lyon at the start of this championship. Same goes with Marseille, not to speak of Paris Saint-Germain who were also defeated by Lorient the previous week. None of these teams have managed to win decisive points after four matches! Interesting that the three leading teams in the French championship so far are Lorient, Le Mans and Nancy, teams with no major stars, a number of local talents and plenty of good will! -

... and Zizou remains the most popular Frenchman From DPA: Former footballer Zidane remains French favourite Aug 19, 2007, Paris - Even after the end of his football career the former captain of France's national team Zinedine Zidane remains the favourite of the French, the Paris-based Journal du Dimanche reported on Sunday. According to a countrywide poll for the paper, the 35-year old heads the list of France's top 50 people, followed by singer and former tennis champion Yannick Noah and the environmentalist and television presenter Nicolas Hulot. In the polls, which are conducted every six months, politicians rarely make it into the top ranks. French President Nicolas Sarkozy is currently number 25.

Zadine is one of te nicest person to be found in the soccer field. He is also one of the most stupid! And also one of the most impulsive! Before that fateful World Cup final match, Zidane had run into trouble several times by physically confronting opponents. He was expelled several times when he played with the Bordeaux team in an early stage of his career. Another butthead incident - but there were others - took place during a Champions League match in October 2000 when he hit the Hamburg team player Kientz. Zidane was playing with the Juventus Turin team at the time.

August 13-19: Max Roach - We Insist! Freedom Now Suite (Candid)
brownie replied to king ubu's topic in Album Of The Week
Yes I attended that Paris concert by the Max Roach quintet and the Sonny Rollins trio. It was held at the Salle Pleyel. I was also busy that night making sure that Cecil Taylor would be able to get into the Salle Pleyel. He wanted to hear Rollins very bad. Plus Albert Ayler who would play next at Salle Pleyel had problems at his hotel (lost luggage). The musicians with Roach were staying at he same hotel and I remember that Hubbard was complaining that the the stars of the show (that included Roach but neither Hubbard or Ayler!) were staying at a better hotel! Seemed that a lot of worthy people were in Paris at the same time -
