  1. Buck Clayton Complete CBS Jam Sessions, disc 2
  2. It's Douglas Henry Daniels. Interesting book with its own perspective!
  3. OK, would have left him out. But other winners are Phil Woods, Toshiko Akyoshi, Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Scott. A pretty decent gathering!
  4. Paid a short visit to a record convention today. Nothing special except for that booth where people were selling a collection of various records which belonged to a recently deceased lady. The lady oviously had excellent taste and among her valuable records were a couple of dozen of Mosaix boxes. In the lot there was the Buck Clayton Columbia sessions set that I had been looking for from the day it became unavailable. The box was mint. Got it for €50 ($60). Would have prefered the vinyl but was happy to grab the CD one. Other boxes included a number of OOP sets including the three Commodore boxes for quite reasonable prices.
  5. Clint Eastwood has made a film centering on Joe Rosenthal's famous photo in his latest film 'Flags of Our Fathers' due to be released this week. A preview of the French version of the film here
  6. Arnett Cobb 'Keep On Pushin'' (BeeHive) with Joe Newman, Al Grey, Junior Mance, George Duvivier, Panama Francis
  7. A well-deserved honour! From the Newark Star-Ledger today.
  8. French clarinetist Claude Luter died today in Poissy, a Paris suburb. He was 83. Luter was one of the most visible New Orleans-style musician in the Paris postwar scene. His band played with Sidney Bechet when Bechet came to Paris in 1949. Luter's band accompanied him for several years. Bechet-Luter records became hits. Luter also played with various other musicians like Mezz Mezzrow, Barney Bigard and Albert Nicholas. He led various revivalist bands until last year.
  9. Charles Mingus 'Blue-Bird' (America)
  10. The JSP/Ted Kentall box is out here. Waiting for someone to confirm the sound is really good!
  11. The French reissue label Frémeaux has just released the first of a series of volumes that should provide a complete overview of the available music of Louis Armstrong. Volume 1- Chimes Blues Should bring joy to the Satchmo completists! Just hoping it will be as good - and as thorough - as the Frémeaux Django Reinhardt series.
  12. Another Moggie gets over the 1K mark: Volume 3 This one looks better than the 'Indeed' vinyl!
  13. Happy Birthday, MG
  14. Claude, this should be the two albums Charles Mingus recorded in Paris for the French label America in November 1970. The albums were 'Blue Bird' and 'Pithycanthropus Erectus'. Mingus group had Eddie Preston, Charles McPherson, Bobby Jones, Jaki Byard and Dannie Richmond.
  15. I still have to read 'Fantomas'. Loved watching the Louis Feuillade films when they played at the Paris Cinematheque back in Henri Langlois days! de Toth does live! His films stand up better than a lot of more reputed films. Those one-eyed directors (Ford, Walsh and Fritz Lang) had better cinema vision than the two-eyed gender!
  16. Ubu, hitting hard on Nicholson, eh? Not my favorite actor but I have a soft spot for his performances in Roman Polanski's 'Chinatown' and Bob Raffelson's 'The King of Marvin Gardens'. Can't imagine any of the current actors matching what he managed to bring to his parts in those films and several other ones. And since this is a Scorcese thread, I'll mention once more how much I admire 'After Hours'. A very runique film. So was 'Taxi Driver'! Too bad I cannot get very excited about his recent films...
  17. Randy Weston 'African Cookbook' (Atlantic, stereo) with Ray Copeland, Booker Ervin, etc...
  18. Happy Birthday
  19. Recently released is this CD It has 19 jazz tracks from film music composed by Vladimir Cosma. Some surprises are included in the compilation. Chet Baker, Don Byas, Toots Thielemans, Philippe Catherine, PepperAdams, Martial Solal are among the musicians that show up in the film soundtracks. Did not realize until I got this disc that Don Byas was heard on the soundtrack of 'Alexandre le Bienheureux', a minor hit by Yves Robert (Byas is magnificient on the two cuts) or that Martial Solal played on the soundtrack of 'La Course A l'Echalotte', a forgettable comedy by Claude Zidi.
  20. Joyeux Anniversaire, Marcus
  21. $1,293 ?!? Indeed!
  22. Jo Jones solos in the Art Tatum version of 'Just One of Those Things' from the Tatum group sessions. Also not strictly a ballad but let's not forget Max Roach's solo contribution to 'Saint-Thomas' on Rollins' 'Saxophone Colossus'!
