No idea on the order the tunes were played but in the liner notes to the original release, producer Lester Koenig states that Wagon Sheels was recorded midway in the session and it was followed by Way Out West!
Leaderless date 'Jazz Goes Broadway' (Vik, mono)
players include Art Farmer, Jimmy Cleveland, Urbie Green, Hal McKusick, Gene Quill, Al and Zoot, Elliot Lawrence, etc...
Doubt these DVDs are legal!
From what I have seen, the best Serge Gainsbourg compilation - and a very legal one - is this one!
Speaking of Serge Gainsbourg, his daughter Charlotte has a new album out today ('5:55' on the Because Music label...
Everybody is raving about it. Heard a few excerpts and it does sound good!
Her first new album in twenty years! She sings mostly in english on that one!
I already said the man's first name was Johnny
It's obviously Johnny Griffin. Not THE JOhnny Griffin; A Johnny Griffin.
Do I get the prize?
MG
No prize!
OK since help is needed, the man shown on the cover has his own Mosaic set!
An exquisite Moulis wine Chateau Tour Granins Grand Poujeaux 1998' went down with the Sunday lunch.
Moulis is the Bordeaux area which produces the excellent Chateau Chasse Spleen! No spleen today so this wine did very nicely.
It was followed by a reasonable dose (no driving today!) of Marc de Beaujolais Terres Dorées from the estate of the great Beaujolais grower Jean-Paul Brun!
It's a pretty good day
Klook solos mostly on the second drum confrontations on that 'Night in Tunisia'. Bu and Klook have pretty distinctive styles but it's a pity that this was recorded in mono only. One of the rare time I miss not having stereo from a session!
Klook was the regular house drummer at the Club Saint-Germain (on the Left Bank) until the time of the Jazz Messengers appearance there in December 1958. He was hired by the owners of the newly-opened Blue Note club (on the Right Bank) and started playing there on January 1, 1959!
The "Art Blakey et les Jazz Messengers au Club St. Germain" were originally released on three individual LPs by French RCA.
Kenny Clarke and Gana M'Bow were listed on those vinyls. M'Bow was a popular presence in the Paris music circles at the time.
Photographer Jean-Pierre Leloir took the image of Blakey in full action during the gig that adorned the LP covers and most reissues.
The 'A La Mémoire d'Art Blakey' logo which is on the cover of the posted photo was added for a reissue.
I was a teenage jazz fan in attendance at the Club when this was recorded. Being there at the right time are among the better memories of my youth!
