  1. ...and another Red Norvo Liberty (never saw or heard that one!)
  2. A little less weird cover...
  3. Yes, but the price is Colossal!
  4. Chuck, when Algren finally showed up and held classes did he ever mention Simone de Beauvoir? Or Sartre? Just curious...
  5. Big Jay McNelly???
  6. Bud Shank 'Barefoot Adventure' (Pacific Jazz, mono) with Carmell Jones, Bob Cooper, etc...
  7. Wonder how NASA ever managed to send men on the moon
  8. Disc 2 proved much more to my taste more than disc 1 but I continued getting into music that was new to me. Which is why I enlisted for Dan's BFT. Things got swinging right from track 1 up to 13 (same tenor duet classic by musicians I had trouble recognising) Track 2 did not make it for me but 3 did! One of the highlight of the assemblage. No idea who was on that Bill Doggett-like vamp. Could the tenor have been Bubba Brooks? Track 4 was a variation on All the Things. Another exercise in not being able to identify who was playing this. Track 5 also kept me in the dark. Not sure about the alto player but the man is good. I'll have to go after these footprints... Same applies to 6. The players were moaning all the way for an excellent interpretation that should have gotten them much more applauds at the end... Track 7 had me wondering about the guitar players until light struck. KB and BB! The final track to volume 5 of the Newport in New York 1972 jams. Great choice! Track 8 was really appreciated (will have to check on the alto player I should have recognised). Loved track 9 (sort of live Jammin' the Blues) which brought in musicians of the caliber of Jacquet, Sweets, Jo Jones among others. Will be looking for that one Enjoyed the rest of the selections except for that ragged Jive at Five. Wonder who's playing that tune without much grace! Wanted to listen to music I was not familiar with. Got a lot in Dan's output. Many thanks for this! I'll really be waiting to find out who was playing on those discs ....
  9. I knew that Dan's compilations would bring a lot of music I would not be too familiar with to myattention. Can't say I was disappointed. Found a lot of interesting music in vol. 2. Volume 1 was a different matter. Right from track 1 (Aretha's chain!) to 4 a number of tunes that are found on some of the public-oriented jazz radios. Was that Lou D on 2? None of them I really cared much for. Track 5 on the contrary. Minor session from a great man!. This tune tune nr. 5 Then that Bag's blues but it just does not sound like the MJQ I have heard so often! The vibraphone does not sound right either! More jazz radio followed that did not make it for me until track 12 (very impressive interpretation of Strayhorn's beautiful tune). I had more luck recognising several of the various songs (Mellotone, Angel Eyes, Blue and Sentimental, Almost Like Being In Love up to the final one although I could not identify that bossa version) than its players except the track 15 which the announcer gave away! but that was an unfamilar version. And very nice it was! Onward to the much more satisfying disc 2
  10. Larry Young 'Heaven On Earth' (BN, Liberty, stereo)
  11. The Liberty jazz albums had some of the weirdest covers! The 'Unpredictable' Steve White cover is a good example. In a similar vein was the cover to the Jimmy Rowles Trio date 'Rare - But Well Done' by Gloria Cortella. The music on that one is better than on the Steve White (White's Nocturne dates were much better, weird too!)! Some other Liberty jazz albums: 6001 - Jazz in Hollywood (Jazz All Stars) 6002 - Dom Frontiere Sextet 6003 - Herbie Harper/Bud Shank/Bob Gordon 6004 - Abe Most (Mr. Clarinet) 6005 - Hollywood Saxophone Quartet 6006 - Jack Millman (Shades of Jazz To Come) 6008 - Bob Enevoldsen (Smorgsabord) 6009 - Buddy Childers (Sam Songs) 6012 - Red Norvo (Vibe-Rations)

  19. Henry Allen 'Feeling Good'! Would love to see this Columbia album get a Mosaic single treatment! With any available additional material. The title tells it all!

  22. Duke Jordan's obituary in The New York Times today.
  23. This was dealt with in this thread Actuel/Byg No further news from this end. The original tapes have still not been unearthed! And chances of an agreement between the original partners are more remote than prospects for the return of peace in Iraq! As for Alan Silva's 'Seasons', the tapes were leased from the ORTF indeed. This was authorised. What was unauthorised was the release of ORTF tapes from concerts by John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Duke Ellington and others which appeared in Japan on Byg vinyls!
  24. The Complete Aladdin Recordings of Charles Brown, vinyl discs 1 and 2
  25. ...and the cover to Volume 2 I bought back in 1997 is this one a 116-page edition from Chronicle Books (San Francisco)
