  1. Wild Bill Davison 'Pretty Wild' (Columbia, six-eye, mono) 'with strings'!
  2. The music to the Roger Vadim's film 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960' (with Jeanne Moreau, Gérard Philppe, Botris Vian, etc...) is mostly remembered for the contribution by Thelonious Monk which remains unissued but the film soundtrack was a very impressive success. The music was composed by Duke Jordan (he used the alias of Jack Marray for business reasons) and performed by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers with Lee Morgan and Barney Wilen. The composition 'No Problem' was a hit in France when the Blakey soundtrack was released.
  3. The OJC vinyl reissue of that album has very acceptable sound and would be much easier - also cheaper - to get!
  4. Kyo, beautiful album that George Coleman album with Hilton Ruiz! Surprised it was not reissued on CD. The Ronnie Scott JazzHouse label did release a G1995 live eorge Coleman date 'Blues Inside Out', a quintet gig with Peter King!
  5. There's already a full thread about this sad news! http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...topic=28899&hl=

    Barney Wilen

Bienvenue Chris! Thanks for the advisory of the programing of the Barney Wilen film on Mezzo. Missed the broadcast on Arte earlier this year and will be away from home in late September when it shows on Mezzo. Hope somebody will record it and provide a copy! Heard good things about it... Would love to see this too!
  7. No idea. But there is a copy being offered at GEMM for $314!
  8. Futura has been hit with a fine of more than €10,000 (more than $8,000) for reusing a photo they bought for the original issue of one of their releases. And that was for a reissue that was limited to 400 copies The fine has slowed down most of Futura's planes for releases/reissues!
  9. An old favorite from the SteepleChase catalogue is this one Beautiful quartet date with Chuck Wayne, Sam Jones and Roy Haynes!
  10. The Fats Sadi date was another session leased from Vogue France. Only reissued in Japan....
  11. Charles Kynard 'Where It's At' (Pacific Jazz, mono) featuring Clifford Scott
  12. Jim, you mean the Moody/Frank Foster CD? Forgot about that one. It had only seven of the eight tunes Moody recorded with strings. Missing was 'Jackie, My Little Cat'! Who'ld want to be without that little cat ?
  13. The Dizzy Reece album is nowhere to be seen in the list Head Man just posted. Release of the reissue looks like being delayed further.
  14. That's sad! Even Miles Davis might have been sad about this! Duke Jordan's piano solo on Bird's 'Out of Nowhere' was the start of an appreciation for his talent!
  15. The Moody with Strings session from 1951 (recorded in Paris) was never reissued until Classics continued its Moody series with this release last year The full session is included there, complete with its arrangements by André Hodeir!
  16. Jimmy Forrest 'Black Forrest' (Delmark) with Grant Green and Elvin Jones
  17. This one should have been reissued some time ago by Futura/Marge but the label has run into trouble (the photographer who took the original cover is suing Futura about copyrights money! Have the vinyl but can't duplicate it!
  18. I am sticking to some of the Wingy Manone volumes that came out on Classics. I enjoy those but don't feel the need to go complete on him.

    Martial Solal

Mais oui, I remember posting about that broadcast but I got tied up with other things that evening You wouldn't want to know! About reading the Solal in french, it's really up to you! Wouldn't want to be too negative. From the little I know of your french, I would say a good reading of any Tintin adventures would be more adequate... but there is plenty to gain from a reading of Solal's thoughts! He expresses himself very clearly! Learned plenty from it! Bonne lecture
  20. Bravo, Jim Your suave french did wonder
  21. This is a Japanese pressing from these past few years. The back cover features a price scanner which appeared lately only! Enjoy the music!
  22. The discs arrived today. Many thanks! Will give them a listen this weekend!

    Martial Solal

Missed that France Musiques Solal/Prevost broadcast! Happy now with the DVD content. Just a note of caution if you want to read this with non-fluent French. The text may be hard to swallow for non-French readers
  24. Johnny Hodges 'Ellingtonia' (Onyx) 3 sessions from 1946, 1950 and 1964

    Martial Solal

Currently reading the first book devoted to Martial Solal. 'Martial Solal, Compositeur de l'Instant' (Editions Michel de Maule). It's a pretty thorough and very absorbing interview by jazz critic Xavier Prevost where many aspects of Solal's life and music are dealt with. The book comes with a DVD that contains the various interviews included in the book. All 8 hours 54 minutes of it. All in French!
