    Funny Rat

Not scary to me! On the contrary, I find this very encouraging! That means that business for these releases is good! Note that these sold out items have a note saying 'currently out of print'. Which probably means they will be available again later!
  3. Viewed the Duncan Phillips collection on show at the Palais du Luxembourg. Thought it would be a good idea to go there early morning on Sunday in the hope there would not be a crowd. I was wrong. The place was crowded. Managed to have a good view of most of the paintings (great Kandinskys, a superb Redon, a superb Bacon, none of the Picassos impressed!). Will return to view this one early afternoon. That's when the crowd thins out according to the people at the museum! La Collection Phillips

  6. $3,000 for this ultra rare René Urtreger LP on Versailles René Urtreger Trio Glad I found recently an exact Japanese vinyl replica of this excellent session for one hundredth of the winning bid!
  7. Hi-de-ho! Great site! And so easy to understand
  8. I'm late but I mean well! Nice to see talent being recognised!
  9. Zoot Sims 'With Bucky Pizzarelli' (Classic Jazz) Zoot Sims 'For Lady Day' with Jimmy Rowles (Pablo)
  10. The woman faced the media today. Thought she was very brave: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/france_face_tra...zkxBHNlYwN0bQ-- From AP:
  11. Yes but the sound on the Mosaic box is WAY much better!
  12. The 'Mainstream Jazz 1949-1965' guide published in 1984 in their Records Collectors Reference & Price Guide series lists UAJS 15005 as having been released in 1962 which should be accurate.
  13. That's one record I've been looking for for about 25 years. Passed on a copy at $150 a few years back--guess I should have bought it. 'From In To Out' is being scheduled for reissue on CD by Futura. Should be available very soon! Pretty good date! Saw a copy of the original recently. Priced at €30 but it came without its cover!
  14. Ran Blake 'Open City' (Horo twofer)
  15. Don Patterson 'Opus De Don' (Prestige, blue label) with Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Pat Martino, Billy James. Liner notes by Chris Albertson!
  16. Angelina's not all bad! From AFP: That's all right by me!
  17. Two different albums. Coleman Hawkins recorded numerous albums during his long career. Never enough of Hawkins albums! As for 'The Gilded Hawk', don't recall having seen this released on CD!
  18. Sorry, Lady!, 'The Gilded Hawk' is nothing to really write home about! Good solid 'with strings' session where Hawk sticks to the melodies. Much better Hawks available... Not that it's a bad one. I just like my Hawkins more adventurous! Like in The Hawk in Paris that Chas mentioned! Also Bird and Clifford Brown - among others - did so much better albums with strings.
  19. Earl Hines 'Plays Cole Porter' (Swaggie) superb solo date Tony Argo 'Jazz Argosy' (Savoy) with Ernie Royal, Frank Rehak, Hal McKusick, Pepper Adams playing arrangements by guitarist Joe Cinderella!
  20. It may seem strange, but Il Duce to many is almost a lovable fascist. Maye it's because of his jolly physique, maybe because he made trains run on time. Maybe it's Fellini's films. I dunno. Never heard his kid's music... Fascist and lovable are two words that do not go together. Mussolini was a Dictator, and a brutal one at that! He ran a police state, with total control of the media, had scores of political opponents murdered or imprisoned, his troops attacked Abyssinia, waited until the German troops had conquered France to launch and attack on southeastern France in 1940. I could go on and on... As for trains running on time read this: The only time, Mussolini made me laugh was when Jack Oakie played Il Duce in Charles Chaplin's 'The Great Dictator'
  21. No idea if there is any truth to this plot. That Middle East tour looked pretty successful. The Ellington band arrived in Bagdad on November 10, 1963 and played concerts on the 12th and 14th at Khuld Hall before traveling on to Beirut. Details from the 'Duke Ellington Day By Day' invaluable book by Klaus Stratemann. The book also notes that the tour was so successful that CBS sent a five-man crew to film the rest of the tour. But on November 22, JFK was assassinated and the rest of the tour was cancelled. Hope the screenwriters are not working out a plot that would link Lee Harvey Oswald to all this!
  22. Dozens of fascists were among the mourners at Romano Mussolini's funeral Saturday. A first in jazz history and a sad one! From AP:
  23. Listened to the vinyl twofer of this not very long ago. It came out as 'Live at the Montmartre' and this was just that. A typical evening with the Stan Getz quartet on a good day. Since one can't have the real experience nowadays, this is probably the next best thing. Not really Getz' best post-60s live date (that might be the London gig with Eddy Louis and René Thomas which was released on Verve as 'Dynasty') but really worth purchasing! The sound is pretty good!
  24. Yes, this looks pretty good. Here is a direct link: http://www.jazzshelf.org/
