  1. I've read that they did a nice job of restoring this one. I saw a muddy, chopped-up copy years ago. The film still shows alot of damage, but considering the age I think they did a great job with this film. Another Renoir great. The restoration has been excellent. Viewed the film at the Paris Cinematheque years ago during Henri Langlois' tenure there and the copy was not in good shape then. 'Boudu Sauvé des Eaux' is one of the best performances from that incredible actor Michel Simon. Simon was also mesmerizing in Jean Vigo's 'Atalante'.
  2. Frank Strozier 'What's Going On' (SteepleChase Direct Cutting) Love this quintet date with Danny Moore, Harold Mabern, Stafford James and Louis Hayes.
  3. Must confess I am getting lost in the myriads of these BN reissues from Japan. Did not get any from the new batch. Guess chuckyd4 has the right answer!
  4. I saw these Japanese BN reissues (also several Prestige at the same price). They look like the real thing. Bet the prices dropped because they have been reissued so often! Wish they had been available at those prices when I was looking for several of them!
  5. Willie Coleman also plays on the Juan Amalbert Latin Jazz Quintet Prestige session 'Hot Sauce' which has been reissued on vinyl recently. Have not heard these albums. Juan Amalbert posted on this forum a while ago. No idea if he is still around these parts. He would know all about Coleman.
  6. Great vibraphone player that Sadi
  7. glad to here that ! so I can keep mine Cheers, Tjobbe Thanks Tjobbe for your offer. I feel better now that I know you'll keep the box And royal thanks to Ubu for his help too!
  8. Wilson Pickett He is being missed!!
  9. Gokhan, as an infamous British politician dealing with Germans said years ago: 'If you don't succeed at first, try, try, try again...' It took me many tries before making thru with the Zweitausendein box. Finally managed to order the Dexter Gordon Prestige box (a steal at €49 including shipping) and got a notification email. All in German of course! Wish I had paid more attention when learning german in highschool!
  10. Sartre and de Beauvoir's graves are at the Montparnasse cemetery which is fully appropriate since they spent most of their life in the neighborhood! They share the same gravestone! Some others buried at the Montparnasse cemetery are Samuel Beckett, Tristan Tzara, Guy de Maupassant, Jean Seberg ...
  11. Cemeteries are among the best places to get away from it all and reflect. I do a lot of sightseeing around Paris these days and have made several stops lately at the Cimetiere Montparnasse. A couple of dear friends are buried there. That's also the final resting place for people like Charles Baudelaire, Chaim Soutine, Jean-Paul Sartre (also Simone de Beauvoir), Henri Langlois, Serge Gainsbourg among many others.
  12. Sonny Stitt 'Plays Jimmy Giuffre Arrangements' (Verve Japan)
  13. Archie Shepp had his glorious band with Howard Johnson on tuba and Jimmy Garrison that night. Jeremy Steig and the Satyrs and also Burton Green were also on the bill. That took place at the Village Theater in the East Village before they renamed the place the Fillmore East. And yes, King Ubu! I was years younger and the Pickett was Wicked
  14. Ben Ratliff continues his 'Listening to CD's With' series in the New York Times. It's Paul Motian's turn today... http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/20/arts/mus...?pagewanted=all
  15. That's really sad. He was Life! Saw him twice in his glory days. First time was in New York in the '60s when he headed a concert that also included Moondog and Archie Shepp! Pickett had me dancing in the aisles while I was taking photos. That takes a man with a Big Soul!
  16. Ted Brown 'Free Spirit' (CrissCrossJazz)

    Hal McKusick

McKusick also recorded under his name several '"play-along-with' albums for Music Minus One. George Duvivier and Bobby Donaldson were along on those sessions. No idea if they have been reissued on CD.

    Hal McKusick

There is no thorough discography of Hal McKusick available on the net now. As one of the most soughtafter sessionman, McKusick took part in quite a number of sessions. The Lonehill 2CD includes the quartet dates McKusick recorded with Barry Galbraith for Bethlehem (East Coast Jazz) and Decca/Coral (Jazz At The Academy) plus the two albums he recorded for RCA Victor (Jazz Workshop and In the Twentieth Century Drawing Room). Lonehill issues are regarded as illegals in several quarters!
  19. Several of those Membran reissues were available at one of the FNAC store this week. They were priced at something like €6 (around $7). Got one of the Herb Geller 'The Gellers', an old favorite. The source for this release has got to be the excellent and legitimate vinyl reissue that came out in 1985 as part of the Mercury Jazz VSOP series in Japan. Indicated length for most tracks is inaccurate. Also, if you program the final track (Suppertime), this starts near the end of the next to last one (Bewitched). Odd! The sound is very good. Lorraine Geller shines throughout the session. What a loss!
  20. Booker Ervin 'The Freedom Book' (Prestige, mono yellow label)
  21. Well, the USA have an illegitimate President and nothing is being done about tha,t why would anyone care about illegitimate CD releases flooding the stores? Ed. to add: hope this will not condemn this thread to the Political Forums!
  22. From The Miami Herald:
  23. Good to see François Tusques get some attention! Tusques makes an appearance tomorrow at the Sons d'Hiver festival here with a trio that includes partner Noel McGhie on drums and bass player Adam Linz.
  24. Jimmy Rushing Esq. 'The Jazz Odyssey' (Columbia, 6-eye mono) with Buck Clayton and his Orchestra
  25. Larry Young 'Contrasts' (BN stereo, white/blue Liberty label)
