Yes indeed. Should also have mentioned Florence as the city of the Medicis! Now spinning: Don Byas ''the big sound'' 'Amoureusement Votre' (Polydor)
-
A reissue!?! Yes! From the Abraxas company. Based in Florence, the city of the Borgias! The vinyl comes in a transparent sleeve. One side has a full circular reproduction of the original ESP issue frontcover, the other has a full circular reproduction of the ESP album backcover! White vinyl background. Pretty nice object. Sound is OK (mono!). Have not compared yet with my ESP original LP. A sticker on the transparent plastic sleeve reads: 'Albert Ayler's 1964 debut release on ESP. A historical moment in avantgarde jazz. Spiritual Unity defined the ethos of ESP as the quintessential free music labels of the 60s and 70s.'
-
Those Abraxas people also issued a 4CD box of previously released ESP material of Sun Ra. Same type of box as the Ayler one. I have been in touch lately with Bernard Stollman re various matters. He is trying to find ways to put an end to these illicit releases.

Leloir used twin-lens reflexes a lot too, Rolleiflexes if I remember well! Which explains the amazing sharpness of many of his images... -

Brownie, I nearly picked up a used CD of Gainsbourg's early jazz recordings not too long ago... may head back to the shop and see if it's still there. Any recommendations in that area? GOM, bear in mind that although Gainsbourg knew his jazz very thoroughly (some favorites of his were Monk, Jimmy Smith, Jackie McLean among others) he did not record any strictly jazz albums. In addition to what couw already recommended, I would suggest you check 'Confidentiel' (with backing by Elek Bacsik on guitar and Michel Gaudry on bass) and 'Gainsbourg Percussions', also some jazzy soundtracks (with very nice trumpet playing by Roger Guérin) on several items in the 3-CD anthology 'Le Cinéma de Gainsbourg' that came out this year from Universal.

Jean Pierre Leloir
brownie replied to sheldonm's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Don't have the Leloir book with me right now, but I'm sure this is an error. There is only one Charles McPherson -
The CD version had four volumes. Each volume contained six CDs, except volume 2 which had only 5 CDs!

Bud Powell '62, Inédits' (CYL) with Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke

If that site also says December 16, then so be it! Have edited today's list accordingly!

I'ld rather wait until December 17, 1970 which is the opening date given in the Jan Lohmann Miles discography. I have more faith in Lohman than in the Columbia people
-
That Kenny Clarke with Andy and the Bey Sisters session is not listed in the Lord... Never heard of it and one I have never seen
