  1. Looks like the estimates were on the low side! Bechet's Buescher soprano sax went up to $163,221! Bechet's golden cuff links were auctioned at $3,429. Buyers not identified so far.
  2. 7/4 finally has admitted killing the thread. Not because one of of my answers ('a bit weird' ) but because the whole thread made him look like a whining idiot! In his initial reply to my prodding for an answer, he gave a good description of a stalker, a subject he obviously knows a lot about. Except he switched roles, a classic transfer! This is a jazz board. Anybody who has time to waste can take a look at his posts. I am sure there is not a dozen interesting posts from 7/4 dealing with jazz. All I wanted was a simple answer: yes or no did 7/4 eliminate one of his thread? It took him two full hours hours of prodding to produce an answer which was followed by his usual deluge of posts! I'll indeed let it go now. It's bye bye 7/4 for me! There are too many interesting people with whom I enjoy sharing knowledge about jazz (and various subjects) to waste my time dealing with this non-entity!
  3. Mais oui! That's the plan later tonight. Driving to friends for a dinner. Bringing the wine but will have to keep away from it since the wife does not drive She will drink for me
  4. This is about a thread 7/4 started over the weekend. He picked up a story from the BBC News on the Pere Lachaise cemetery. I pointed out to him that the story was a year old and had been outdated the day after the BBC filed it. The story should have been left in its grave. I also pointed out 7/4's accute tendency to go ahead with useless posts. When I looked for the thread today, I could not find it. I invaded a thread in which 7/4 was a participant and asked him what happened to the thread. 7/4 has refused to reply even though he has been posting all day long today. Standard procedures on this Board before the original poster eliminate one's thread is to advise the various people who posted answers that the thread was going be eliminated. It's happened before and has been going on without problems. Obvfiously 7/4 eliminated the thread on his own volution without having the courtesy to advise me. I knew he was posting way too many useless posts, but now I also know he is a coward! As I said on the eliminated thread, I'll go back to ignore his posts as I did before (and should have kept at) and let him return to his pathetic oblivion!
  5. Now spinning another Roy DuNann masterpiece: Hampton Hawes 'For Real' (Contemporary, mono original) with Harold Land, Scott LaFaro, Frank Butler

  9. Anita O'Day Sings Jimmy Giuffre Arrangements 'Cool Heat' (Verve Japan)
  10. Don't know if it's available on DVD in the States but there is an early Melville film that is definetely worth seeing: 'Deux Hommes Dans Manhattan' set in New York and filmed partly in NYK and mostly in Paris, at Melville's own film studio. Good jazzy soundtrack by Christian Chevalier and Martial Solal. Melville is one of the two main actors in that film!
  11. Cecil Taylor, The Complete Candid box, vinyl disc 4
  12. A beautiful lady she was! My wife and I met her when we went to Studio Rivbea in the mid-70s. One of the nicest woman around! My heart goes to Sam Rivers and Bea's family. What a loss that is!
  13. The official list: From Reuters:
  14. Well, Ghost refers to the Alan Lankin's Jazzmatazz site which has Verve issuing the album this month. Not sure it will have the cover shown there.
  15. About the Chet Baker 'Broken Wing' JazzInParis CD, it was withdrawn from the catalogue several months after its relase, probably over copyrights. Although a number of the 'Broken Wing' CDs were available at the time of its withdrawal, it turned out to be a very hard-to-find issue. This was the only JiP CD which was omitted from the huge 75-CD Jazz in Paris box that was released in 2002.

  17. An early solo by Grimes I always appreciated was the one he took at the end of 'Moon Rays' on the Roy Haynes 'Out In the Afternoon' album for Impulse with Roland Kirk! Also an impressive solo on the following track 'Fly Me To The Moon' from the same album!
  18. Now: Cool Jazz at Saint-Germain des Prés (Jazz in Paris) the first and probably only vinyl from the series. A 10-inch LP that won't come out on CD! With 1956 sides by barytone sax players Armand Migiani and Michel de Villers next: Jimmy Hamilton 'It's About Time!' With Clark Terry and Britt Woodman (Swingville, red label)
  19. Jazz In Paris also added its first vinyl to the series. A ten-incher. Cool Jazz At Saint-Germain des Prés Could not find anything about it on Universal.fr or at Amazon.fr. The LP includes two sessions, one by the Armand Migiani Nonet (a May 1956 session for Philips France with Roger Guérin, Maurice Vander, Pierre Michelot among others), the second by the Michel de Villers Sextet (an April 1956 session for Decca France with André Persiany and Paul Rovère among others). Nice slightly doctored black-and-white cover shot by Paul Almasy taken at the Caveau de la Huchette! FNAC. com says it is a numbered limited edition! I'm sure it's a limited edition (one of a kind I am told, with no additional vinyl planned) but I could find any number on my copy Very nice anyway even if the sound seems a bit flat!
  20. Gone but not forgotten! His music is very much alive

    Norman Howard

Excdellent article, Clifford! Good to see Norman Howard get some recognition
  22. Excellent! My favorite Nistico so far! Too few occasions to listen to him. Roy Haynes kills on that one. Those Beehive sessions must have been exciting events with all participants in full form. The only thing I don't like about the label is their covers. Most could have used better images!
