  2. And the 50th st. NY LPs sound better then Bergenfield... Two questions: Which was the first LP with the Bergenfield address? They moved in 1967. And which LP was the first one with this blue label? Any ideas?! Thanks. The John Coltrane album 'Soultrane' (Prestige 7142) is said to be the first Bergenfield label issue. Got this when it came out in the late fifties. My copy has the Bergenfield adress, yellow label. Prestige blue labels appeared in 1964. Fully agree with the 50th NY LPs sounding better than the Bergenfield ones. The NY labels pressing set standards that many Bergenfield did not quite match.

    Jazz DVDs

My first choice would be Great Performances It never got better than the films gathered on that DVD!
  4. Always liked Paul Bley's music but I think that with age, he has gained a maturity that shows in the depth that emerges from his recordings of the past decades. Some excellent ones have been mentioned. The hommages to Annette (HatHut) and Carla (Owl) are must-haves! Several others that are worth looking for: - 'Solo Piano' (SteepleChase) - Sweet Time (Justin Time), - 'Notes' (Soul Note), duos with Paul Motian, - 'Chaos (Soul Note), with Tony Oxley, - 'Hands On' (Evidence), - 'Basics' (Justin Time) ...but there so many more excellent ones! Don't think there is a bad Paul Bley album of late. A couple should be avoided (including 'Improvisie', reissued recently on America), but these date from the '70s!

  12. The first six sides of the Bill Coleman Jazz In Paris are from a 1951 studio session with Jay Cameron on alto, Art Simmons on piano, Dave Pochonet on drums and others. These were issued on 78RPM discs and never reappeared. Most of the rest comes from an October 1952 concert at Salle Pleyel with - among others - Dicky Wells, Guy Lafitte and Zutty Singleton. The concert was released on two hard-to-find 10inchers. Got battered copies of these two (for something like one euro each!). Nice concert (with a very enthusiasted audience). Will be glad to listen to these in new sound! Another link

  18. Excellent record, that Rufus Jones Cameo! Mentioned this in the 'Great Finds' thread when I came upon the album a couple of years ago: Rufus Jones Cameo
  19. I remember the little fracas the public showing of the film originated when it was first viewed. If Lelouch was arrested, doubt he was put in jail! Lelouch admitted some time ago that he was the car driver. It seems the car used for the wild ride was a Mercedes 300 6,9! The car sound that went onto the soundtrack was actually from a Ferrari 330 prototype!
  20. Gil Evans worked 'Little Wing' to death. He had his musicians play this at practically every concerts. The tune is considered a Gil Evans classic by now!
  21. Eric Dolphy 'Far Cry' (New Jazz, purple label) with Booker Little
