Never asked a musician! But I did buy a good number when a former French jazz roadie sold some of his vinyls at a record convention some years ago. Managed to grab several albums that had been signed by people like Hank Jones, Joe Newman, Phineas Newborn, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie among others. One of the vinyl - a bootleg with radio tracks by Count Basie and Erskine Hawkins - was autographed by both leaders! It was a free-for-all scene and I missed albums signed by Dexter Gordon and Chet Baker... Also bought (at one of those NYK flea markets) an original mint copy of a Prestige 50th St. album by Barbara Lea with a very long an personal dedication by Ms. Lea. Asking price was one buck! That Jazz Messengers looks tempting but is out of reach nowadays!

Arvanitas recorded a couple of organ records. I have not heard them... http://www.jwolf.com/iajo/iajofram.htm Click on France and Arvanitas pops up... Some samples of the album can be heard here: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...7471457-7679433 Arvanitas played some organ on several albums. Among those: - Sonny Criss 'Mr. Blues Pour Flirter' from the JazzinParis series, - Georges Arvanitas 'Three of Us' which was reissued on Adda. Arvanitas plays very good organ on two of the six tracks 'High Beat' and 'Space Ballad'.

A choice (and autographed) item... Jazz Messengers at Bohemia

The answer is no! It's been released before on various bootlegs including the 3LP box 'John Coltrane Quartet Live at the Half Note' which was issued in 1984 by Audiofidelity. With some more material. Let's wait to find out how much better the sound might be!

Jerry Newman also recorded Sonny Berman's 'Beautiful Jewish Music' (with Al Cohn, Earl Swope, Serge Chaloff, Don Lamond, etc...) a jam session that took place at his home. It was issued on Onyx. Don't know if it ever was released on CD.

Some of Arvanitas best albums were the two he recorded in Paris for the small Pretoria label. These vinyls fetch incredible prices nowadays. First one was '3AM' recorded in 1958 with Doug Watkins and Art Taylor (in town with the Donald Byrd/Bobby Jaspar Quintet). Second one was 'Cocktail For Three' recorded in 1959 with Gene Taylor and Louis Hayes (in town with the Horace Silver Quintet). Both were reissued on vinyls by Paris Jazz Corner and are out of print again. They were later reissued on CDs in Japan thru Sketch. In a too generous day, I gave away my copy of the first Pretoria vinyl to the owner of Paris Jazz Corner (to thank him for having been very generous when I bought music from him) shortly after he opened shop years ago. He told me right away he would make a killing with it from Japanese collectors! Never asked him how much he got from it.

The Moutin Reunion Quartet is one of the best group to have appeared in recent years on the French jazz scene. Have not checked their 'Something Like Now' album yet but their previous release 'Red Moon' was terrific. And their label Nocturne issued this on vinyl along with the CD. Samples of their albums can be heard on their site: http://www.moutin.com/LatestCDRelease.html

Sad to report news of the death of the excellent French pianist Georges Arvanitas. He was 74. Arvanitas died this weekend near Paris. Arvanitas had played with many of the best musicians when they appeared in France. He played on albums by Dexter Gordon, Ted Curson, Sonny Criss, Ben Webster among many others. Arvanitas had settled in the United States for a couple of years in 1964 and had been part of the Yusef Lateef group. With Lateef he had recorded the Impulse album 'Psychecemotus'. The trio he formed with bassist Jacky Samson and drummer Charles Saudrais was a mainstay of the French jazz scene. He will be sorely missed.

This was purchased in Andorra where practically nothing is illegal

David, the original might be very hard to get but the album has been reissued on the unmentionable Lonehill label as part of the Jim Hall 'The Unreleased Sessions'.

How stupid when the box is still available direct from Mosaic and much cheaper
-
Bill, you're absolutely right about all this. Quentin Jackson is not listed in the line-up on the back cover. He is mentioned however in the liner notes. And he is on the front cover photo taken at the session with Andferson, Woodyard, Nance...
