Sonny Rollins
brownie replied to Tom in RI's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Waiting for a chance to hear that new Rollins album. The last opus from him 'This Is What I Do' has become a favorite one that I return to often. Can't remember getting that much pleasure out of a Rollins album in a long time. And it's beautifully built with no let down up to the final tune, a superb rendition of 'The Moon of Manakoora'. The works of a Master! -

I'm with Chuck Nessa about Don Ellis. Promises unfullfilled. I still love his 'New Ideas' and 'Essence' albums (the Pacific Jazz vinyl still comes with a 22-Franc mark, original vinyls were pretty expensive 40 years ago!). And the various albums he made with George Russell (GR in KC, 'Ezz-Thetics' and 'The Outer View') but have still to groove on any of his big band sides. I heard his big band when Don Ellis appeared at the 1968 Antibes jazz festival but was left pretty unimpressed. Count Basie and Pharoah Sanders were also at the festival that year and the Ellis appearance seemed a downer compared to those.

OK, I like the Hi-Los better too but I got the Four Freshmen box on sale and it's throroughly enjoyable. Not all of it but there's quite a lot of good sessions inside (the FF and Five Trombones sides are still a delight!). Taken in small doses, it stands up pretty well! And Mosaic only had 3,500 copies of it. The Mosaic CD box with the lowest copies made! Tatifan, the box I have has the regular Mosaic 30-page booklet plus a single page that is mainly a tracklist.

Happy Birthday, kh1958 Hope you're having a great day!

Started acquiring Miles Davis albums before the sides with John Coltrane became available! I have now some 1OO vinyls and some 100 CDs (sets with multiple CDs not individualised!) Guess you can call me a Miles completist... until the electric Miles boots flood burst -
Is this legal? ← Not sure this would get the Benny Golson seal of approval Editing the typo!

Yves, ARTE features some jazz but few concerts from the Marciac festival. The music channel Mezzo (available on cable) does have a healthy share of jazz programs including several Marciac concerts. Mezzo I'm not sure it can be seen outside France.

I hope I'm not one who gets to see that. ← Not to worry, Ron! I'm French and we French people know how to select our enemies

The introduction of the new server has been excellent except for that particular point. When anybody PM'ed with the former setup, the message went directly to the person's send message file. If you did not want to keep it, you just deleted it. Now when you PM, you type your message then before sending it you have to make sure you store it before sending it away. If not, there is no trace of the message having gone away I must confess I do not automatically store it. Just forget to go through the procedure from time to time Any way of going back to the former setup on this? All sent PMs would be automatically stored and we just delete those we don't want to keep.

One of the most reliable jazz book I keep handy (Dictionnaire du Jazz) has the trumpet solo on Georgie Auld's 'Co-Pilot' attributed to Freddie Webster. I have nowI relistened to the track and have to agree it sounds very much like Dizzy!

The Meritt liner notes were pretty thorough usually but those on the twofer 21/22 (Chu Berry -The Calloway Years 1937-1941) do not shed any light on this.

Trouble ahead for Lance Armstrong
brownie replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It's 'L'Equipe' which got hold of the report from the Chatenay-Malabry anti-doping lab and published it. The Lab confirmed the reality of its report. The findings of the report are not being contested. And since we're talking about dope, I must say I am starting to OD on this Lance Armstrong story. To me the case is closed and I'll try to go cold turkey on it
