  1. Also found this in 'The Jazz Years, Earwitness to an Era' by Leonard Feather (1986): Feather also mentions about the 'Cats vs. Chicks' date that the session was released as a ten-incher. He adds that he tried (and invested some of his savings) to have it released as a twelve-incher. He adds 'This failed to happen; my money, and, to the best of my knowledge, the masters were lost for ever'. Wrong at least on one point. MGM released it as a 12-incher. Now if anybody on this Board asks me if I have books by Leonard Feather, I'll flatly deny it
  2. From the 1983 reprint of the 1960 First Edition of Feather's Encyclopedia: CARSON, NORMA trumpet; b. Portland, Ore., 1922. Worked with Ada Leonard, Sweethearts of Rhythm, Vi Burnside; from 1952 free-lanced in Phila; married to tenor player Bob Newman. Inspired by Gillespie and Davis, she revealed considerable talent in the Cats vs. Chicks LP on MGM but has remained in relative obscurity. Addr: 902 Brant Ave. Clark, N.J.
  3. An orgy! Careful, there! We've got kids around here now
  4. I remember! Or do I really? Welcome Cooltrane!
  5. Barry Galbraith and: Billy Bean Jimmy Gourley Chuck Wayne ...
  6. Brad, about Webster Young, there were three vinyls under his name issued on VGM Records 'Wesbter Young Plays The Miles Davis Songbook', volumes 1, 2 and 3. Have not played them for a long time. Sound was pretty bad. John Hicks and Jodie Christian were in the rhythm section on several tracks. Don't think they were ever reissued. The 'For Lady' album was much better!
  7. The five tracks with the longer versions were issued for the first time in 1984 on a Japanese GNP vinyl from King 'Max Roach and Clifford Brown - In Concert - Complete Version'.
  8. Glad to hear that things seem to be better now!
  9. I was not surprised. I was very pleased! Go, Curtis, go!
  10. The Gene Norman album 'The Best of Clifford Brown and Max Roach' is always overlooked. Yet there is superb Brown-Roach music there! Essential!
  11. This Board has 948 registered members as of today. So let's welcome nr. 1000. He posts here under the name Randy Twizzle. And seems to be an avid reader of the media from the 40s and 50s. Have enjoyed his 10 posts so far. Hope to see more of those posts A very warm welcome to Randy. Whoever he is
  12. Now would that be for your own enjoyment? or for an investment?
  13. Saw a copy of a rare soundtrack from a French 1968 film 'Pourquoi l'Amerique' by Frederic Rossif. This came out on the AZ label and I don't think it has ever been reissued. Soundtrack was played by Eddie Harris and his quintet (with Jimmy Owens and Jodie Christian). Anybody heard this one? The session was produced by Ahmet Ertegun and Joel Dorn in New York. Copy does not look too bad. I am trying to live up to my New Year resolution to curtail records purchases I have about nil on Eddie Harris under his name.
  14. Shouldn't this be: MERDRE! Merde alors!
  15. The Herbie Nichols Complete BN Sessions!
  16. I'ld skip the Corea and get a Duke (or a Count, or a Prez)!
  17. Teddy Edwards 'Nothin' But The Truth!' (Prestige) with Walter Davis, Paul Chambers, Billy Higgins plus Montego Joe and a guitar player Phil Orlando who does not seem to have appeared on any other record dates! Next: Buck Hill Quartet 'Impressions' (SteepleChase) with Reuben Brown, Wilbur Little and Billy Hart

  19. yes, and a rare occasion of hearing Andrew Hill playing in the Roland Kirk group, even if one cannot see much of him! Is that the track that is included on the bonus disk with the Kirk 'Complete Mercury' set? The bonus disc from the Kirk box has a 7'08 version of 'A Stritch In Time' from Newport 1962. The sound is fine there. On the DVD, Kirk plays 'Three for the Festival'. The sound is terrible. The visual is even worse. Looks like a tenth generation copy of a video found in a garbage can! Just awful! And a shame!
  20. Happy Birthday, Nate Keep up the good work!
  21. yes, and a rare occasion of hearing Andrew Hill playing in the Roland Kirk group, even if one cannot see much of him!
  22. Will Eisner was a regular visitor at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinee, the biggest comics show on earth, in Angouleme in the south of France. He was given there the royal treatment he deserved.
  23. Close... Half of the way... The Bowie reference should have you demoted But the Young answer is correct and counts double Quote taken from the presidential interview by Chris Albertson!

  25. Bertrand, there was no special sale of Free America CDs at the Virgin Champs-Elysees. There was a special New Release sale on those as there are on a lot of new releases. Those Free Americas are almost all gone at the Virgin store by now! I won't get the Alan Shorter reissue. Did not bother with the original vinyl when it came out and was widely available and on sale at many stores. Wayne's brother was a special character and not a very interesting player if I may say!
