There were two albums from the Charles Mingus band that were released originally on America, 'Blue Bird' and 'Pithycantropus Erectus'. They were later issued on the Prestige two-fer.

'Walk Softly-Run Wild' is a Coral album where the band plays several standards including 'Laura', 'Alone Together', 'You Go To My Head' on the A (soft) side, then goes to wilder Richards compositions like 'Run Wild', 'Three Cornered Cat', a three-part fugue on side B. 'Experiments in Sound' is a Capitol album that features all Richards compositions. Among the soloists in the two albums are people like Jimmy Cleveland, Gene Quill, Dave Schildkraut, Frank Socolow, Julius Watkins. Lots of great moments there!

I am sure there is only one Nico Buninck. I heard him a couple of times in Paris clubs in the late '50s when he was hanging around the pretty active jazz scene here. I know he also plays on a Phil Woods Philology CD I've got somewhere...

I just hope this is not true, but... Steve Lacy is so much alive. Last news about him at the Steve Lacy site is that he was going to be interviewed by Sonny Stitt's daughter. http://senators.free.fr/NavbarFrames/Frame...et_Welcome.html Click on the news section at the bottom left of the screen.

The Bethlehem album is fine but I doubt it would make it into a Mosaic Select for copyright reasons. Mosaic has access to Roulette and Capitol. 'Rites of Diablo' is really excellent. So are the other albums from the Johnny Richards Orchestra I have heard. Very exciting writing and solos throughout. An underrated big band...

Don Joseph. Wish there was more to hear from him than his Uptown album and a few appearances with the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band. -
Charles Mingus 'Blue Bird' (America) by the Mingus group (Eddie Preston, Charles McPherson, Bobby Jones, Jaki Byard and Dannie Richmond) that toured France back in 1970.

Three Johnny Richards albums on Roulette ('The Rites of Diablo', 'My Fair Lady', 'Aqui Se Habla Espanol') plus two Capitols ('Wide Range' and 'Experiment in Sound') would one Mosaic Select make. I'ld buy that one!

If you can find it, Andre Hodeir had an illuminating chapter on Charlie Parker and the Be-bop movement development in his 1954/1961 book classic 'Jazz, Its Evolution and Essence'. The other chapters of the book are very interesting too, including Hodeir's famous analysis of Duke Ellington's 'Concerto for Cootie'.

Budd Johnson recorded marvelous sessions for the French Black and Blue label. In addition to the Mr. Bechet record that has been mentioned there was another 'Ya Ya' album (different from the Argo one). The Black and Blue Ya Ya had Budd Johnson playing alongside Charlie Shavers with Andre Persiany on piano. The same group recorded another album for Black and Blue under Shaver's name.

Eric, to repeat myself... I don't think Buddy Tate is on that Harold Mabern reissue. The tenor sax player you're enjoying is Buddy Terry. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...5&hl=buddy+tate In any case, Buddy Tate is a great player well worth investigating!

French RCA is reissuing a number of rare French jazz albums in a Gold series which should be out any day. The series will include three Guy Lafitte RCA albums including 'Jambo' and 'Sugar and Spice'.

Zoot Sims is honey to me! And this one tastes excellent. I have the 'In a Mellotone' release from 1996 on the Portuguese label Live at E.J.'s Found the Sims, plus the Dexter Gordon and the Al Cohn from the same series at the same time. All 2CDs. All recorded at that Atlanta place that closed by 1982. No idea what was the secret behind those releases. They also had Milt Jackson, Clark Terry, Monty Alexander sets I did not get. The sound is much better than what the AMG review implies! The Zoot Sims 2CD set has three additional tracks 'Emily', 'All the Things You Are' and 'Girl From Ipanema' over the Storyville single CD album. The name Korosi appears a number of times in the liner notes but his Eastern European past is not mentioned. Liked his piano playing when the 2CD appeared. Like it even more now that I know some of his history. He is not the piano player on the Al Cohn or the Dexter Gordon sets...

Probably that the music is on the Easy Listening side of jazz. Most of the melodies listed on that album are among the corniest French songs including 'Parlez Moi d'Amour', 'J'Attendrai' or 'Sous les Ponts de Paris'. And many thanks to couw to enable me to discover this pianist. I didn't realise he was the piano player on the 'Zoot Sims in Atlanta' release! I enjoyed that one before getting acquainted with his earlier sides.

He played several Streisand songs on the 'Happy Days Are Here Again' on Prestige but that was not a dud. Pretty good album in fact. Will spin the LP later today.

Never heard the ESP Levitts. Stella Levitt recorded an album under her name in 1980 (in Belgium?). It came out on the Adda label. Jacques Pelzer on alto, Dennis Luxion on piano, Ricardo Del Fra on bass and Al Levitt on drums were in the backup group. Album was not too bad!

Not only does Blood, Chet and Tears looks bad. It sounds terrible. Hope Chet had some good time with whatever money he got from the record session. The album is a rare one but it MUST be avoided. Like the plague

Miles Davis 'Doo-Bop' Bill Evans 'Theme From The VIPS And Other Great Sounds' Chet Baker 'Blood, Chet And Tears'

Another forgotten Jimmy Raney album (it's out on CD though) is the 'Two Guitars' session for Prestige with Kenny Burrell. Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean, Mal Waldron, Doug Watkins and Art Taylor are also on the date. Nice Burrell/Raney duets on 'Little Melonae'. Raney has a 'Out Of Nowhere' solo feature.

Revenant is planning big Albert Ayler box
brownie replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I received that Wire Tapper 11. The 'Untitled Blues' was a rehearsal tune for the 'New Grass' album on Impulse. Not really Ayler's best. But the 12-bar blues turns out to be very enjoyable. From what I heard from Revenant, the box is coming ahead and should be out in October as scheduled. -
