  1. The President's Day is August 27. March 15 is the day he went. I'll stay out of this celebration and keep on mourning Nice photos, though The only True President...
  2. Before 'Soultrane' there was 'Traneing in/John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio' which was issued right after the 'Coltrane' session (with Johnny Splawn and Sahib Shihab). That one was the first album released under John Coltrane's name. 'Traneing In' was a beautiful quartet date. 'Slow Dance' is among the gems from that date.

    Albert Ayler

I e-mailed Revenant and got a reply that said there were no problems with copyrights and work on the Ayler set was going on as planned.
  4. Had that feeling when I went to have a look at AAJ a few days ago. Noticed some posters had a couple of questions which were answered by other posters who provided direct links to Organissimo for the right answers to the questions. This must have hit a raw nerve...
  5. I have no problem with his chasing and sharing details of Parker's life, but there is a lot of stuff in that set which has nothing at all to do with Charlie Parker, and while you may want every cough and sneeze, every second of sound, most consumers buy a Charlie Parker album to hear Charlie Parker play--not a 3-second presumed snippet of "Lover Man." My point was simply--and here I speak as someone who has produced a number of reissues--that I think it is foolish to aim strictly at the completist or buyers with a collector's craving for minutiae. Foolish, because it can--as is the case here--increase the price of the album. It also forces the average listener to sit through a lot of meaningless, irrelevant material. Phil, of course, is not just a completist, he has on several occasions simply invented "discoveries" in order to perpetuate a largely self-proclaimed authority. He has claimed discovery of hitherto unknown tracks that had, in fact, been released previously (one reason Verve dumped him), and he has edited tape to sensationalize, as in the case of "Mahalia Swears," an outrageously dishonest, gratuitous track on his Black, Brown, and Beige reissue (one of several factors that led to Columbia dropping him. Enough about Phil, but I hope you get my point re the Benedetti release. Chris, I agree with your non-Parker comments on Phil Schaap. As for the Parker part, I'm ready to take everything. Coughs, sneezes and all. Besides Parker, Lester Young is the only other musician I want to hear all of what's available. As I already said, the Mosaic set is for Parker freaks. Those who just want to listen and enjoy the non-truncated music (I can understand that!) have plenty of albums to choose from. And when I was in and around New York (which has not occured for the past couple of years) I tried to tune in on Schaap's broadcasts on Parker. No better way to start a New York day. Is he still doing those shows?
  6. Ghost, there are four pretty detailed pages on the staging of 'Jump for Joy' in the invaluable book 'Duke Ellington Day By Day and Film by Film' by Klaus Stratemann. If it's not too late and you want a look at it, e-mail me with a fax number and the pages will be on your way.

    Prez is here!

Ando, you're welcome. And a very warm welcome to this Board!
  8. Weizen, I have those stamps on quite a number of original LPs. My take of it was that sample albums were checked as thousands of albums came out of the pressing plant and got inspection stamps.
  9. Chris, I confess to being a Charlie Parker completist. Waiting now for Uptown to come out with the Dizzy/Bird 1945 concert as I was waiting for Mosaic to release the Benedetti box - and that took some time!. The box is for Bird lovers. And the way the available material was presented filled my expectations. Jazz fans who want to test Bird waters have plenty of excellent albums available with complete well-recorded sides. I shall also repeat that I think Phil Schaap's minutia was just fine for me. I have nothing against his obsession with chasing (and sharing) all details of Parker's life. That box was one of Mosaic's finest achievement.
  10. When you go the Blue Note Live forum, you get this: http://www.bluenoteeurope.com/mb/viewforum.php?f=3 The Blue Note Live is Dead...
  11. Bev, nice to hear from you. Hope to see your contributions on this Board's other forums...
  12. And I will have to sing the praise of the liner notes by Phil Schaap who took a blast from one of the posters here. The notes provide a very thorough account of what music is available and gives a lot of reasons on why some sessions sound better than others. Listening to the box can be frustrating because of the various missing parts. But what has been preserved is worth all the money the set costs. Above all, praise should go to Dean Benedetti for spending time and money to capture the music. I'm glad there is a musical document on Benedetti's playing even if I have listened to it only a couple of times. I'm glad it's there alongside the Bird music he captured.

Interesting. I've never heard of MIchael Marcus. How would you describe his playing? Eric Dolphy/Sonny Simmons. Plays some mean bass clarinet. Good composer. He is a partner of Sonny Simmons in Cosmosamatics, actually. D.D. beat me to it. Pretty accurate description. Would also add a touch of Jimmy Lyons.
  14. Very surprising how few Shirley Scott albums for Prestige have been reissued by Fantasy in their original forms. She was one of Prestige' constant seller and the label issued albums by her one after the other in the sixties. She started very strong with albums like 'Great Scott!', 'Scottie', 'Hip Soul', 'Hip Twist' and 'Plays Horace Silver', all excellent. They have remained favorites.
  15. Since this is the Photography Thread, I'll post this here. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...d_press_photo_1 The top winner is a dear friend of mine. He has already won two Pulitzer Prizes. Don't know what prize he can aim for now...

Was impressed with Ayler Records' latest release: Michael Marcus Trio with William Parker and Dennis Charles 'Ithem'. http://www.ayler.com/
  17. I voted for 'Cookin'' because it was the first one of the series when it came out. I got all the others later as soon as they were issued but 'Cookin'' remained my favorite. And those vinyls sound so good...
  18. Just what was the question?
  19. Hey Couw-Boy, weren't you the one that plastered that picture of a woman's genitalia on a thread and called it "The Origin of Life" or somesuch nonsense? That costed us a couple of newbies, I bet! Well, maybe it will also give us a couple of newbies in a few months
  20. Ghost, excellent! Will give a listen to those broadcasts!
  21. From Reuters:
  22. An Atlantic test pressing of the Lenox music is up for auction on EBay. This comes for Fred Cohen's Jazz Record Center: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...6&category=1078
  23. The sound is not good. The performances has all kind of cuts. But the music is so damn good!!! That's one box to get I have been blessing Mosaic for releasing this.
  24. Ghost, would love to hear that. Will it get a replay at a decent time for us people on the other side of the earth? 9PM your time is middle of the night here and this will be on a very early Monday morning. Looked at the radio program. WFIU seems to be a very interesting station to have around...
  25. Yes, miss Michael Fitzgerald's contributions. Hope he did not leave because of the Deep thread. This has gone from funny to pathetic....
