Happy Birthday Dex! wherever you are.
Was spinning 'Go' yesterday and did not notice the birthday date. What a fantastic session that was!
More Dexter later today. 'Swingin' Affair' probably...
It's only February and I have Baby Face Willette caught in action on this month's page of the 2004 calendar decorating my office. Will get to 2005 later.
Is that Junior Cook on the front page?
I have slowed down on buying Mosaics since I already had most of the stuff that has been issued lately.
Could not resist the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band box however.
My first shipment from Mosaic (back in 1986) had the Herbie Nichols, the Albert Ammons/Mead Lux Lewis and the Art Pepper sets. This was a BIG box. All LPs ($9 a disc, no Mosaic CD back then). Mosaic had just moved to its current Stamford location. The sets came with brochure no. 5 which reproduced a Chicago Tribune article on the company by Larry Kart.
Luke, you're welcome here!
Thanks for the information on Smalls releases. They look worthy of purchase. Will look for the Frank Hewitt album. Not familiar with that musician but his background seems highly interesting.
I have heard - and been impressed - by Ari Hoenig's drumming with Jean-Michel Pilc.
Will there be a CD of Gil Coggins on the label?
Missed him by a couple of days when I was in New York back in 2000. He was at the Village Vanguard for a few days. Heard an interview of him on the radio at the time. With a few samples. His voice was superb.
My favorite ducal male singer, right next to Al Hibbler.
Will spin 'Flamingo', his 1940 hit tune with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, later today. Love it!
$8.5O will buy you an excellent album. Check the condition because this requires a mint (or near-mint) vinyl to enjoy the superb engineering. 'Turnaround' with Hampton Hawes is a masterpiece, so is the Don Cherry duo 'Out of Focus'.
The Shepp and Ornette (trumpet) tracks might not be to everyone's taste.
The Mosaic Port of Harlem Jazzmen was a gatefold LP. No booklet but good notes by Stanley Dance. The Mosaic had ten tracks by the Port of Harlem Jazzmen.
The US CD had the same ten tracks plus four tracks by Sidney Bechet with Teddy Bunn, Pops Foster and Sid Catlett, plus five tracks by Teddy Bunn on guitar. Notes were by Dan Morgenstern.
These are superb sides but don't expect high fidelity sound!
That Benny Carter was originally released on UA. It was reissued by Blue Note France in the late '70s. Excellent 1960 quartet date with the fine rhythm section of Jimmy Rowles, Leroy Vinnegar and Mel Lewis. Benny Carter is the Master! There is a superb version of 'Everything I Have is Yours'.
One of the famous covers by Dutch artist Marte Roling!
Some of her covers were discussed in this thread

Patricia, though the area you describe brings memories I can't recall that record shop. The ones I visited had really no interesting jazz vinyls. All I did find was a couple of Diane Dufresne albums that a friend of mine who was infatuated with Diane was looking for.
Don't take it bad but am not planning to revisit the city any time soon -_-
The release date listed looks like being the U.S. one.
All these Classics have appeared recently in the Paris shops.
Got hold of the Mildred Bailey 1945-1947 CD last week.
Mark Gardner. Very informative well-written liner notes for Xanadu (yesterday) and Steeplechase (yesterday and today) among others.
But I also like the notes from people who have been mentioned earlier (Morgenstern, Hentoff, Levin, Kart, etc.).
To the previous recommendations, I'll add the 'Live From the Las Vegas Tropicana' album that was reissued a couple of years ago by Capitol. This was the great 1959 band with Lennie Niehaus, Richie Kamuca, Jack Sheldon among th soloists.
