It's a reference to "Max's Kansas City," I believe. You know, the arty-beat-wannabee hangout of the '50s in Greenwich Village. The liner notes - by Leonard Feather - indicate the title is in reference to a two-week engagement by the Russell sextet at a club called the Blue Room in Kansas City. The lolal musicians visited the place during Russell's gig including Fats Dennis, John Jackson (the other alto player in McShann's big band when Bird played) and Eddie Vinson. An aside. George Russell says 'our recording of Tune Up, one of Eddie's great compositions, is dedicated to him.' 'Tune Up' is credited on the album to Miles Davis, as usual.

Butch Warren is also on a second Walter Bishop trio date (1963) for the Cotillon label, with Jimmy Cobb. He also is the bass player on the McCoy Tyner Impulse session for the 'Today and Tomorrow' album (with Thad Jones, Frank Strozier, John Gilmore, Tyner and Elvin Jones). That's all the non BN/Monk material I could find.

Bertrand, Butch Warren was also on Bobby Timmons 'Holiday Soul' (Prestige) with (the late?) Walter Perkins on drums. This was recorded by RVG on November 24, 1964. Will have a look at the Lord later today.

Which is the filthiest key on your keyboard?
brownie replied to rockefeller center's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You don't have to tell me! I have an english keyboard at work and a french keyboard at home. And most keys seem to be at the wrong place now. Feel like I have been hit by dyslexia... The 'enter' key on my work computer has given up and is out of its socket. -
brownie, I think there was one Bley composition on it. Stratusphunk had another one. Dmitry, the Russell in KC LP label credits 'Lunacy' to Dave Baker but the liner notes state that the tune was composed by Carla Bley. And it sounds right. This plus 'Rhymes' makes two

The New York Times has this story on Norah Jones in its Thursday edition. Very difficult to miss Norah Jones here these days. She will be appearing at concerts next April in Paris and her image graces the frontpage of quite a number of magazines. Photos of Norah Jones are even displayed on the Paris public transport buses.

Insider info alert - you will only hear it here: In '76 I had a bitch of a time trying to make the record sound decent. I think we remixed the date 4 times. For the reissue we dumped the multi-tracks into the computer and discovered a problem. We recorded Warne's sax with 2 microphones - one top and one bottom. We discovered the 2 saxophone mikes were out of phase. We simply corrected the phasing and it sounds much better now. OK, I'm sold. Loved the LP as it was. Will be getting that CD. This Organissimo Forum is costing me a fortune And I love it

Lester Young, Charlie Christian, Jimmie Blanton

Unless that CD has more than what was originally released, I'll stick with the LP. One of Russell's best album with two early compositions by Carla Bley.

J.A.W. Sorry about that. The various links work fine here. Still can't play the Penguin Baseball!

I'm with you on McKusick. Brilliant soloist AND brilliant arranger. His 'Jazz Workshop' RCA album is one of my very favorite records. The man made a half-dozen albums which are all excellent an innovative. Also interested in finding out about that 45!

The link works fine from my computer. And my computer is so work-oriented that it won't let me play the Penguin Baseball game on the Miscellaneous Non-Political Forum THAT link does not work from my computer.

Would love to get that time machine. Would set it back to 1933 for a visit to the Cherry Bossom Club in Kansas City when Coleman Hawkins was ambushed by young tenor sax players Lester Young, Herschel Evans and Ben Webster. Legends were born that night...

The New York Times has a review in its Wednesday edition of a Roswell Rudd appearance with Mamadou Diabate in Brooklyn last weekend:

Talk about obscure. These Braith sides must be hard to find. So was the LP that Coggins recorded under his name. Never ran into that one. Found this short report about the car accident he was involved in last Summer: http://www.ejazznews.com/modules.php?op=mo...rticle&sid=1447

I've given the MGM Stereo LP version of this a quick hearing and I don't hear distortion - unless you call distorted the sound of the electric piano! No way am I going to check the version from the Bill Evans Verve box which is getting rust somewhere in the place I call home. One hearing of this music is enough for me tonight. I am a huge fan of Bill Evans but that easy listening album is one of the absolutely non-essential Evans records.

The JSP 'Legends of Country Blues' has all the Paramount sides Son House recorded under his name. Disc A of the 5CD set has the following tracks: - Walkin' Blues - My Black Mama, Part 1 - My Black Mama, Part 2 - Preachin' the Blues, Part 1 - Preachin' the Blues, Part 2 - Dry Spell Blues, Part 1 - Dry Spell Blues, Part 2 That set also includes the 19 sides Son House recorded in 1941 and 1942. The same Son House sides from Paramount are also on another JSP box, the Charley Patton Complete Recordings. They are on disc D of the 5CD box.

A hearty welcome back, Rooster. Glad to see you back on board.... -
I think all 26 pre-1942 Son House sides are on the 'Legends of Country Blues' 5CD box from JSP. Will confirm later today when I get home and check the box. The set also has complete pre-War recordings by Skip James, Bukka White, Tommy Johnson and Ishman Bracey.

Another neglected musician gone. There were too few records by Coggins (the ones with Miles and McLean come to mind) but his piano playing was always interesting. Wish there were more records by him. Very sad news.

Might be they are not on Universal France site because they've been out so long here that they are not in print anymore. See most of those releases in secondhand shop only by now.
