  1. Received the Lyons box last week. Have been through the first 3CDs. Amazed - as always - at the quality and inspiration of Lyons' music. An advise to any serious jazz fan, get this while it's still available! This is creative music at its very best.
  2. Ben Webster, Lester Young and Charlie Christian are waiting to join in!
  3. ' I Feel Good' was an early favorite until I saw James Brown introduce 'Cold Sweat' back in 1967 at the Paris Olympia. Then there was 'I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine'... And now, Ladies and Gentlemen,! JAMES BROWN!!!
  4. Bill Perkins is mispelled Parkins all over the 1978 LP 'Bill Parkins Plays Lester Young' on the Japanese label Yupiteru. And the bass player is listed as one Monty Budwing.
  5. Happy birthday, young man!
  6. Not on EBay either. When in New York a few years ago, I dropped by one of the antique stores around 23rd Street. In a corner at one of the shops there was a box with some LPs. One dollar each. Nothing interesting except for mint original copies of the RCA 'Lullaby of Birdland' album (don't think it's been reissued since it came out in 1955) and the first Prestige album by Barbara Lea - one of my favorite singers - with a lengthy autograph by Barbara Lea to a male friend on the back cover.
  7. This is the obituary written by Peter Keepnews which appeared in Saturday's edition of The New York Times.
  8. The Sadi Vogue 10-incher was reissued a few years ago as a 12-inch LP in Japan with the original cover.
  9. John Coltrane 'The Village Vanguard Impulse box The Great Jazz Trio 'Autumn Leaves' Joe Venuti/Dave McKenna (Chiaroscuro) Lee Konitz 'Thingin' (Hatology)
  10. The Plugged Nickel gigs were December 22, 23, 1965. The next Miles published bootleg is from May 1966 (the Portland concert the Plugged Nickel quintet with Richard Davis on bass subbing in for Ron Carter that came out on JazzDoor and some other label).
  11. Mikeweil, you're very lucky. I have been looking for a copy of this Newport album for years. No luck, so far. Thanks for posting the image, I had never seen what the cover looked like. Trust it's good.
  12. Another obvious one is the Milt Jackson Atlantic album 'Bags and Flutes'.
  13. 'One red-blooded male's', that should be Berigan. But I always thought his blood was blue...
  14. Get them all! And don't forget the Monk at Newport set. Monk and PeeWee Russell playing together. You shouldn't miss that!
  15. Is that Nouvelle Cuisine?
  16. EKE BBB, you're welcome! Hope they put out an updated edition soon.

    Don Ellis

I have ignored the Don Ellis big bands albums. Reading the thread makes me realize I should turn my attention to them. I was impressed with the small group 'New Ideas' and the' Essence' Pacific Jazz LPs when they came out after Ellis made his debut with the George Russell sextet (he was a good match to Dolphy in 'Ezz-Thetics'). And it would be interesting to hear what happened to Al Francis. Ellis and Francis were inventive new voices. I caught the Don Ellis big band at the Antibes jazz festival in 1968 but was not really blown away. Time for reevaluation probably. I'll be after some of his big band stuff now.
  18. Really enjoyed reading all the posts. You people are wonderful! Even JimS!! When I finished working yesterday, I headed straight to the department store and got a new Braun electric razor, it was on charge all night and I tested it this morning. Now I feel like a new man (Joe said this before). Except the last thing I heard from my wife when I left home was 'When are you going to switch to manual?'. The new razor does make a little more noise than the dead one. Will have to check that Mach 3.
  19. ... Green
  20. Sad to hear this. Jackson was quite a character and quite a good bass player. He also led a shortlived but amazing big band in 1949 that produced one recording session for Columbia (Tiny Kahn's 'Father Knickerbopper' came out of that session) and a bootleg album from Royal Roost broadcats. Great stuff. Berigan posted recently a couple of very interesting Chubby Jackson interviews.
  21. I can certify to that. When I visited the BN offices on a couple of occasions in the mid-60s, there was the Lion and the Wolf inside. And that was it. I purchased albums from them direct. Once, I had to wait behind Roy Haynes who was waiting to get a free copy of the just-released Horace Silver's 'Song For My Father'. Wolf was the one digging out the requested albums. I was writing articles on jazz at the time(never got any money from it) and had an arrangement from BN and Prestige for copies of new releases at $2.50 each. Got quite a number that way but wish I had not ignored some of the LP albums still available then.
  22. Chaney, thanks for the link. A very interesting article from the Paris Transatlantic Magazine. Should read this more often. Their interview with Sunny Murray was also excellent. The two interviews brought back a lot of memories. The price of the set has scared me too, which is why I asked for recommendations. Will probably take the plunge before Christmas time. An Alan Silva box for Christmas sounds OK.
  23. OK it works now.
  24. AAJ seems to be down again!
  25. Electric of manuel? What's yours? JimS, you're out of this! My trusted Braun electric shaver gave up this morning. After several years of daily service. No problem with the thing before. The motor just went down. Shaving is about the first thing I do in the morning. And I don't really fell good until I have had my shave. After it's done in a few minutes, I'm ready for the day. Tried to grow a beard decades ago but I just didn't like it. I realise it's a personal problem because I have to admit the best (and closest) shaves I have had have been at hairdressers in North Africa and around the Mediterranean where they use the single blade razor. Manual shaving is just not for me. I tried that too but I grew tired of the scratches and the blades and creams rituals. Right now I don't feel good. The beard is growing. Can't wait until I'm done at the office so that I can rush out to buy a new electrical razor!
